Revanna recalls how well he handled energy dept in coalition govt

Mysuru: Former minister and Holenarasipura JD(S) MLA HD Revanna on Thursday said a project initially designed to enhance power generation and supply electricity to rural areas of Ramanagara and Bengaluru was renamed Mekedatu project. Revanna said during his tenure in the coalition govt as the energy minister, a detailed project report (DPR) was prepared for the project, aimed at generating 500MW of hydropower. However, the collapse of the coalition govt halted progress. "This project is now named Mekedatu," Revanna told reporters. Speaking about his tenure, Revanna claimed he maintained fiscal discipline, avoiding any electricity tariff hikes and leaving the energy department with a fixed deposit of Rs 500 crore. He contrasted this with the department's current financial state, alleging it now faces a debt of Rs 55,000 crore. "I do not know about smart meter installation. Earlier, we undertook reform measures in Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Bengaluru. Now, we only hear about losses," he said, expressing concern over the department's present condition. Acknowledging minor confusion within JD(S), he said: "Ours is a small party. Former minister GT Devegowda will not go away. Everything will be fine in the coming days."

Karnataka HC directs rape accused Prajwal Revanna to seek bail from sessions court

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed rape accused Prajwal Revanna to approach the sessions court to seek bail. Justice SR Krishna Kumar said the suspended JD(S) leader may return to the High Court, if necessary, after the lower court considers his plea. The judge observed that Revanna should exhaust all remedies before the trial court before seeking intervention from the High Court. This was the accused's second attempt to secure bail in the case. Revanna's earlier plea for bail was dismissed by the HC in October 2023. Subsequently, the Supreme Court also declined to grant him relief. Advocate Prabhuling Navadgi, appearing for Revanna, argued that the court was well within its powers to hear the bail application directly. However, the bench maintained that the correct legal course would be to first move to the sessions court. The High Court has directed the trial court to decide on the fresh bail plea within 10 days from the date of its filing. In March 2024, he filed a fresh bail application in the HC, citing a "change in circumstances'. His legal team argued that the prolonged delay in commencing the trial had resulted in a violation of his fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty. Revanna is the main accused in four separate FIRs involving allegations of sexual assault, voyeurism, and circulation of obscene material. The FIRs were filed after around 3,000 video clips allegedly depicting sexual violence were widely shared on social media platforms. The first FIR was filed in April 2023 by a domestic worker employed at Revanna's family-owned farmhouse. She accused him of repeatedly raping her and threatening to leak footage of the abuse if she spoke out. According to her complaint, the assaults began in 2021. The trial court framed several charges against Revanna, including rape, criminal intimidation, voyeurism, and distribution of private images without consent.

Revanna holds meeting with HIMS, Health Dept. officers over sudden deaths in Hassan

Former Minister and Holenarasipur MLA H.D. Revanna, on Tuesday, held a meeting with officers of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and the Department of Health and Family Welfare regarding the recent sudden deaths reported in Hassan district. Mr. Revanna told the officers that the people were in shock over a series of deaths due to heart-related ailments. Many private hospitals and clinics have been allegedly using this opportunity to make money by charging high fee for tests. The officers should ensure the government ambulances work throughout the day and do not take patients to private hospitals, he said. He pointed out that the district has a medical college and a super-speciality hospital as well. Given the facilities available, the patients need not go to private hospitals. He also instructed the officials to take action against the doctors who recommend patients to private hospitals. Speaking to press persons, the JD(S) MLA pointed out the absence of a Cath Lab system, an interventional imaging platform helpful to treat people with heart problems, at the HIMS. He said that the system had not been set up even after it was sanctioned and the institute had sufficient funds to procure it. He demanded that the HIMS should conduct Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Echocardiogram (Echo) tests, free of cost, utilising the user's fund of the institute. Citing addiction to alcohol as one of the reasons for heart attacks, Mr. Revanna suggested closing liquor shops by 8 p.m. in Hassan city. Legislators A. Manju, C.N. Balakrishna, H.P. Swaroop, HIMS director B. Rajanna, and DHO Anil Kumar, among others were present at the meeting.

CID files ‘B' report in Suraj Revanna sexual assault case

Bengaluru: In a major development, JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna has received significant relief in one of the unnatural sexual assault cases filed against him. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was investigating the case, has submitted a 'B' report to the Special Court for Public Representatives, citing lack of sufficient evidence. The case was initially filed based on a complaint by an individual claiming to be a member of 'Brigade Khajanchi', and an FIR was registered at the Holenarasipura Rural Police Station. The CID took over the investigation and found that the evidence was insufficient to proceed with charges in one of the two FIRs filed against Revanna. However, CID has already filed a charge sheet in a separate FIR related to similar allegations. The original complaint dates back to June 22, 2024, when the alleged victim accused Suraj Revanna of sexual misconduct. He was arrested the following day on June 23. The complaint was initially submitted in Hassan district and was later transferred to Holenarasipura Rural Police. Meanwhile, Revanna's associate Shivakumar filed a counter-complaint, alleging blackmail for money. He claimed that the complainant threatened to file a false case unless Rs 5 crore was paid. Following these conflicting claims, the case was handed over to CID. With the 'B' report now filed in one of the cases, Suraj Revanna stands cleared in that instance, while legal proceedings in the other continue.

Rape-accused Prajwal Revanna moves Karnataka high court again for bail in sexual assault case

Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna has once again petitioned the Karnataka High Court seeking bail in the ongoing sexual assault and rape case filed against him. His earlier plea was rejected by the court, which cited the seriousness of the allegations and concerns that he might influence or intimidate witnesses. JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna (PTI/File) Also Read - Bengaluru civic body's pothole 'fix' sparks outrage as photos of shoddy repairs go viral At Tuesday's hearing, Senior Advocate Prabhuling K Navadgi, representing Revanna, argued that there had been a notable change in circumstances since the previous ruling. He pointed to the prolonged delays in the trial proceedings as grounds for granting bail and emphasized that procedural lags were beyond Revanna's control. Navadgi also highlighted that the original complaint was registered nearly four years after the alleged incident. He told the court that the survivor had not initially invoked rape charges under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code. Those charges, he claimed, were included only at the stage of recording her formal statement. According to the defence, Revanna has no intention of hampering the judicial process and continued imprisonment under such conditions would be unjust. The state government, however, strongly contested the bail plea. It argued that the delays in the case were a result of Revanna's actions, not the prosecution's. Government counsel alleged that Revanna had frequently summoned defence witnesses and created disruptions in court, effectively stalling the trial.
