Nine Inch Nails Roar Back With First ‘TRON: Ares' Single

Nine Inch Nails' first proper new song in five years, 'As Alive As You Need Me To Be,' has emerged ahead of the fall release of TRON: Ares, for which the Trent Reznor-led group is supplying the soundtrack. The latter is due Sept. 19 from Interscope, with the third film in the TRON franchise hitting theaters on Oct. 10. The propulsive 'As Alive As You Need Me To Be' burbles with dance floor menace and the revving sound of the futuristic motorcycles frequently seen in TRON's in-film racing sequences. The track was produced by Reznor and longtime collaborator Atticus Ross in tandem with Boyz Noize, Ian Kirkpatrick, BJ Burton and Hudson Mohawke. More from Spin: Alabama Shakes Shake, Rattle and Rock 'N Roll Again Perry Farrell Hits Back With Suit Against Jane's Addiction Bandmates New Blood Orange LP Boasts Lorde, Turnstile, Zadie Smith In all, NIN's TRON: Ares soundtrack sports more than 70 minutes of new music from the group, whose last new albums were the simultaneous 2020 releases Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts. 'I'll give a few spoilers: there's not one second of orchestra in our score,' Reznor recently told Empire. 'It sounds precise and unpleasant at times. It's not an atonal, punishing score, but we spent a lot of time thinking about the undertones of what's happening in the story. The concept of artificial life infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways. We kind of riffed on that.' The movie stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Even Peters in the follow-up to 2010's Tron: Legacy, itself a long-in-the-works sequel to the classic 1982 original film. Daft Punk's score for Tron: Legacy was a massive hit, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and selling more than a million copies in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Wendy Carlos penned the score for the original movie. Nine Inch Nails' first North American tour in three years will get underway Aug. 6 in Oakland, Ca. Reznor and Ross are also hosting the first Future Ruins festival, which will be held Nov. 8 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center and feature performances by acclaimed film and TV music colleagues such as John Carpenter (Halloween, They Live, The Thing), Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein (Stranger Things, Lost in the Night), Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh (The Life Aquatic, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore) and Questlove presenting the score works of Curtis Mayfield. Nine Inch Nails at the O2: 'Trent Reznor is the last great art rock star'

David Bowie was right about Trent Reznor. The Thin White Duke's ability to align himself with the best new talents in any era – from Mick Ronson to Iggy Pop to Lou Reed to Nile Rogers – let him in the early 90s to seek out Trent Reznor. Of all the hard rock musicians to emerge at that time as huge-selling, stadium-packing megastars, he did not seek out Axl Rose or Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder, it was Reznor who he buddied up to, and toured with. And the years have proved Reznor to be the one genuine artist (in the absence of Cobain), among them. Around the time of their massive hit double-album The Downward Spiral, a none-more-black heavyweight slice of personal demons fed through industrial metal, he could easily have just turned into another heroin casualty, chewed up by fame, and at best limping along on desultory albums with ever-diminishing returns.

Iconic '90s Rocker, 60, Shares Surprising Memory of Late Music Legend

Iconic '90s Rocker, 60, Shares Surprising Memory of Late Music Legend originally appeared on Parade. As the frontman for the groundbreaking band Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor was one of the most iconic musicians of the '90s — but that doesn't mean he lost the ability to be completely starstruck by other legendary rock stars. In a recent interview, Reznor, 60, recalled seeing David Bowie sing his song "Hurt" live when NIN opened for the late musician on the 1995 "Outside" tour, which featured Reznor and Bowie collaborating during each other's sets. "We would sing it live onstage together," Reznor said in a clip shared to TikTok this week, adding, "and I distinctly remember standing onstage, looking over, and David Bowie, you know, singing my song with me, and thought, man, how the f— know, how is this happening?" Fans in the comments loved hearing Reznor reminisce about the unforgettable experience. "The two loves of my life NIN and David Bowie. love it!" one person raved. "What a moment," somebody pointed out, as another gushed, "still have a major crush on him." "This is the man, you listen when he speaks," declared someone else. Reznor, now an Academy Award-winning soundtrack composer, opened up about Bowie's influence — both musical and otherwise — in a 2021 interview with Consequence of Sound, admitting that he was both "terrified and intimidated" to go on tour with the "Space Oddity" singer, who died in 2016 at the age of 69. "What really left the biggest impression on me was there I was in a bad state of addiction and kind of going down the toilet," he revealed. "And he was on the other end to have come out of it. And there were the few kind of big brother/fatherly times where he'd call me aside and kind of get on my sh—t: 'You need to get your sh—t together. It doesn't have to end up down there.' He didn't say this, but look at where he was. He was happy. He was still taking chances."Iconic '90s Rocker, 60, Shares Surprising Memory of Late Music Legend first appeared on Parade on Jun 9, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

Iconic ‘90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades

Iconic '90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades originally appeared on Parade. Even though Trent Reznor is a two-time Academy Award-winning composer, the 60-year-old still has some of that industrial angst that propelled him to rock greatness as the leader of Nine Inch Nails. And at the kickoff show for the band's Peel It Back tour, Reznor and crew revisited some of NIN's songs that made them legends in the 1990s, including some that haven't been played in decades. Reznor formed the group in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. Their debut album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine, resonated with Gen X listeners (and MTV viewers who tuned in to videos for 'Head Like A Hole' and 'Down in It'). The band then achieved unprecedented mainstream success in '94 with their second album, The Downward Spiral. The critically acclaimed LP spawned 'Closer,' arguably Nine Inch Nails' most well-known song. NIN revisited another Downward Spiral classic at the start of their June 15 concert at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. After playing 'Right Where It Belongs' (from With Teeth) that the band mixed with 'Somewhat Damaged (from The Fragile), Nine Inch Nails segued into 'Ruiner' and 'Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now).' It was the first time that the band played any of these songs live since 2009, according to The night also featured an appearance from Boys Noize, a German dance producer who's opening for NIN on the Peel It Back tour. Boys Noise also remixed Renzor and Atticus Ross' Challengers score, according to Stereogum. The producer accompanied the band in performances of 'Vessel' and 'Came Back Haunted,' as well as 'Parasite' – from Reznor and Ross's side-project, How To Destroy Angels. The Peel It Back Tour is Nine Inch Nails' first major tour since 2022. The opening night's performance featured classic NIN tracks, including 'Reptile,' 'Wish,' 'March of the Pigs,' and 'I'm Afraid of Americans,' the song that Reznor did with David Bowie. Recently, Reznor shared a personal memory of the late music icon, recalling a shocking moment when Bowie attended one of Nine Inch Nails' shows in 1995. The admission left fans reeling.
