Nebraska's Matt Rhule: 'It Wasn't a Good Job, But It's the Right Job'
Scott Frost recently called coaching the Nebraska Cornhuskers the "wrong job" for him during Big 12 Media Days. Reflecting on his time at his alma mater, Frost – who returned for his second stint at UCF – said the biggest lesson he learned was not to take the wrong job. Current Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule was asked about those comments on Tuesday. While he didn't disagree that the program wasn't in a great position when he arrived, he made it clear he still sees Nebraska as the right job for him. "This wasn't a good job," he said during the Big Ten Media Days. "But we've made it a good job, and we're about to make it a great job. This will be one of the best jobs in the country." Rather than criticize Frost, Rhule showed respect. "I have a ton of respect for Scott," Rhule said. "And I've always been very empathetic for what he went through, because this was his home. If you guys fire me tomorrow, I'm just going to go back to Cape May and sit on the beach — go back to where I'm from. But this was his home." Rhule pointed out that the program he inherited was in bad shape and behind on everything. "There was no NIL when Scott was here, no new facilities," he said. "I walked into a better situation." Frost was fired three games into the 2022 season, finishing with a 16-31 record across four and a half seasons at Nebraska, never reaching a bowl game. His legacy, however, as a 1997 national champion quarterback is still present in the program. Rhule noted that Nebraska placed a large photo of Frost as a player in its facility this offseason. When asked what comes next if Nebraska starts winning under his leadership, Rhule responded, "Sometimes recruits will say, 'Coach, if you win, what are you gonna do?'" he said. "I'm gonna stay right here. The only thing I ever think about is getting a lake house at one of these lakes in Nebraska I keep hearing about." Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Freshman All-American wide receiver Isaiah Mozee transitions to running back for Nebraska
During Tuesday's Big Ten Media Day, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed that a freshman is making a position change heading into the 2025 season. Isaiah Mozee is now running back after starting the offseason at wide receiver. Mozee committed to Nebraska after flipping from Oregon last summer. The Kansas City, Missouri native, was a high school All-American wide receiver for Lee's Summit North, becoming one of the top receivers in the country and receiving an invite to the Under Armour All-America game. The 6-foot, 210 athlete is familiar with the running back position, having played in the backfield along with wideout for Lee's Summit North. In his career, Mozee racked up 665 yards on 78 carries for 11 touchdowns. In his senior year, he finished with 420 yards and seven touchdowns on 52 carries. He also scored three punt return touchdowns. At wideout, Mozee hauled in 233 catches for 3,241 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career. As a senior, he caught 60 passes for 903 yards and 13 touchdowns. Nebraska's already stacked with wide receivers, with Jacory Barney, Kentucky's Dane Key and Cal's Nyziah Hunter forming the group. Mozee now joins Emmett Johnson, Kwinten Ives and Mekhi Nelson in the running back room. Rhule spoke about Mozee switch to running back at Big Ten Media Days, pointing out how he wants to get the freshman some action this year. 'Isaiah is a guy that is going to play as a freshman,' Rhule said. 'He loves football. We are just trying to get him on the field with meaningful touches as fast as possible.' Matt Rhule takes subtle dig at Lincoln Riley during Nebraska media day
The USC Trojans' session at Big Ten media days will be on Thursday. We will then hear from Lincoln Riley and others about the Trojans. Until then we get a chance to see what the Trojans' opponents think about their chances this season and the Trojans themselves. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule and the Huskers are taking on the Trojans this season. When asked about USC he made sure to throw a little dig at his good friend and coaching rival. Charlie Viehl with Yardbarker broke down Rhule's statements regarding Riley and the Trojans in a recent feature. "Although USC Trojans coach Lincoln Riley is not scheduled to speak until Thursday, a number of USC's opponents, like Nebraska coach Matt Rhule (did speak). USC on SI's Bri Amaranthus asked Rhule about Nebraska's matchup with USC on Nov. 1, and the Cornhuskers coach talked about hosting Riley and the Trojans. "No matter what, Lincoln's gonna find the way to utilize his talent, score points on offense. Obviously they made up big jump last year on defense. It will be a great game. They'll be a top-25 team, and we play later in the year, I hope it's really cold. I hope it's at night and I hope it's really cold," Rhule told Amaranthus. "He's a great coach, and he's a good friend. I mean he's just a great coach," Rhule continued. There is nothing wrong with competition and making things even more interesting before the season starts, but it appears Rhule does not have confidence in Riley's Trojans to perform well in cold weather. This is a notion that Lincoln Riley has been battling since his days at Oklahoma, due to his teams not playing very many games in weather with low temperatures. Riley has always addressed that question with the fact that his Oklahoma teams consistently played well in November, and that he has embraced playing in cold weather. Last season the Trojans lucked out, avoiding playing any games in November in the Midwest. This season they have a matchup at Nebraska on November 1. It will be the Trojans' first true test in the Big Ten with cold weather being a potential factor. We will then see how prepared this team and Lincoln Riley are.

Nebraska head football coach Matt Rhule listed as safe in latest hot seat coach rankings
CBSSports released a ranking of the job security of all 136 FBS coaches earlier this week. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule was ranked as safe for now, according to the measurement scale in the article. Rhule is 12-13 in his first two seasons in Lincoln. He is entering his third season with the program, which historically has been the most productive for him as a head coach. He has a rising sophomore quarterback, Dylan Raiola, as well as new pieces on both sides of the football. A new-look coaching staff should help him achieve that leap. CBSSports added the Huskers' coach at 2.11 on their measuring scale. This put him in the "good for now" category in terms of job security. It will be interesting to see how the program fares in Rhule's third season. They have the pieces to be able to compete with the rest of the Big Ten. Now, they have to focus on putting it all together.
