March against 'landgrab, forced conversionof Hindu women'

The Jeay Sindh Mahaz organised an eight-kilometer-long march in Mirpurkhas on Saturday decrying corporate farming, plunder of Sindh's resources and alleged forced conversion of Hindu women. A large number of people from Hindu community also took part in the march which was led by the JSM's Chairman Riaz Ali Chandio and Nawaz Shah Badahi. Chandio reiterated that the corporate farming cannot be accepted in any form even if the Pakistan Peoples Party's Sindh government dubbed the initiative as Public Private Partnership (PPP). The JSM's leader said instead of supporting the poor farmers the provincial government is only facilitating the large corporations and that too to the detriment of the peasants. Chandio alleged that Sindh's coal, oil, water and other resources have already been sold. He rejected the proposal for constructing new dams on the pretext that Indus river's water is being released in large volume in the sea during the ongoing flood season. He deplored that Sindh's major cities like Mirpurkhas still lacked public sector universities but the Sindh govt is planning to build a university in Punjab from the funds generated by selling the state's land to Bahria Town Karachi. Chandio reiterated that the country's law does not allow marriage of underage girls yet Hindu girls aged 14 to 15 years solemnize marriages and change their religions. Chenab dam The convener of Save Indus River Movement Syed Zain Shah, who is also head of Sindh United Party (SUP) has condemned the federal government's proposal to build Chenab dam in Punjab. He asserted in a statement on Saturday that the govt's plan is yet another move to rob Sindh of its due share of Indus water. He blamed the PPP and PMLN for being hands in glove with the establishment in making such plans.

JSM announces joint Sindhi-Baloch struggle

Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) Chairman, Riaz Ali Chandio, announced, on Friday, that he and former Senator Nawabzada Mir Haji Lashkari Khan Raisani have agreed to join forces to protect the rights and resources of Sindh and Balochistan, through a joint political struggle. Chandio stated that the water, oil, gas, coal, islands, and other resources of Sindh and Balochistan are continuously being exploited, but that the people of the two provinces are not receiving any benefits. Additionally, he stated that, along with the JSM, other Sindhi nationalist parties will also join hands with their Baloch brothers in the struggle. Further, Chandio and Raisani argued that the elected provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan are not representing the voices of their electorate, allowing for the continued exploitation of the two provinces and their resources.

Protests against new canals intensify

A severe scarcity of water at Hussainabad exposes the River Indus dry bed, revealing a haunting landscape. The mighty river has been reduced to a shadow of its former glory due to shortage in release of water downstream from upper riparian barrges. PHOTO: EXPRESS The Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM), amid protests interminably continue across Sindh against the proposed construction of six new canals on the Indus River, blocked the Indus and National highways at three different locations on Friday. The JSM Chairman Riaz Ali Chandio, who led a protest rally on the National Highway in Moro, Naushehro Feroze district, said they carefully chose April 4 for their protest to neutralise the propaganda being spread by Pakistan Peoples Party. "Unless the government issues the notification of cancelling all these controversial projects, the protests would continue," he warned. Chandio reiterated that the Green Pakistan Initiative, new canals and the corporate farming are all meant to rob Sindh of its water and land. "It is an economic murder of the entire population of Sindh which is dependent on agriculture." He claimed, the PPP is organising cosmetic protests in the province although it has given its consent for the construction of new canals. Dr Niaz Kalani of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM) deplored that the people who participate in peaceful protests are being subjected to enforced disappearance besides being nominated in flimsy FIRs. However, he asserted, the protests are becoming stronger with each passing day despite all the pressure tactics being employed by the government. Meanwhile, Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party Chairman Dr Qadir Magsi announced that his party would start sit-in protests on the highways in the province from April 10. He said every day a different location of the highways will be selected for the sit-in. "The ongoing protests against the canals and the corporate farming have turned into a movement which won't stop." In a novel form of protest, a bride made it mandatory for the groom to affix banners rejecting canals at their wedding function in a village in Shahpur Jahania area of Noushehro Feroze district on Friday. The couple, whose marriage was later solemnized in the afternoon, belong to Unar community. Not only banners were put on walls of the wedding hall, but the place reverberated with songs and slogans of nationalists and disapproval for the canals. Rallies and demonstrations were also organised in dozens of other places in many districts of the province.

Sindh rises up against Indus canal project

HYDERABAD: A massive protest march led by the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and Qaumi Awami Tehreek (QAT) kicked off from Sehwan in Jamshoro district to Dadu on Sunday, opposing the federal government's plan to construct six new canals on the Indus River. The march, led by nationalist and opposition leaders, saw participation from thousands of demonstrators rallying against what they called an attempt to rob Sindh of its water rights. Those who led the protest included GDA's Dr Safdar Abbasi, QAT's Ayaz Latif Palijo, Sindh United Party's (SUP) Syed Zain Shah, and Jeay Sindh Tehreek's Riaz Ali Chandio. Addressing the participants in several towns along the route, the leaders denounced the Green Pakistan Initiative, alleging that it was designed to benefit a handful of elites at the expense of millions of Sindh's farmers and labourers. "If we could successfully resist the construction of Kalabagh Dam and the imposition of a dual local government system in Sindh, we will also ensure that this controversial canal project is rolled back," vowed the leaders. Palijo also criticised the PPP for allegedly abandoning the 18th Constitutional Amendment, which was meant to strengthen provincial autonomy. "Turning Sindh into a desert is an act of hostility towards Pakistan's 250 million people," he declared. SUP leader Syed Zain Shah underlined the importance of water for Sindh's survival. "Farmers are already struggling to sustain themselves. If their last means of livelihood-agriculture-is taken away, they will starve," he warned. Jeay Sindh Tehreek's Riaz Ali Chandio said water is a matter of life and death. If the government does not retreat, the people's response will be equally strong. Former chief minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi blamed PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari for allegedly trading Sindh's resources to maintain political dominance.
