World's top sugar maker shuts large Brazil plant to cut debt

By Marcelo Teixeira (Reuters) -Raizen SA, the world's largest sugar producer, said on Tuesday that it was shutting down for an indefinite period one of its largest plants in Brazil, the Santa Elisa mill, as the company continues to adopt measures to deal with a large debt load. Raizen, which is controlled by Shell and Brazilian conglomerate Cosan SA, said that as a result of the plant's closure it had entered into agreements with six sugar companies to sell 3.5 million metric tons of sugarcane that would be processed by the Santa Elisa mill. It said the sale of that sugarcane would bring in 1.045 billion reais ($188.18 million) that Raizen will use to cut its debt of over 30 billion reais. The Santa Elisa mill was a historical site for the Brazilian sugar and ethanol industry. The plant was founded 90 years ago in the main sugar belt of Ribeirao Preto, and helped consolidate Brazil's position as the world's largest sugar exporter. Its past owners were behind the political movement in the 1970s to create Brazil's ethanol program, called Proalcool, in a time when the world was struggling with record high oil prices. CEISE Br, an association of equipment makers for the sugar and ethanol industry, said the closure of Santa Elisa was worrying for the segment. "There are concerns about the impact of this action in the industry, particularly regarding ongoing contracts for maintenance, technical support and supply of equipments in the current crop," it said. Raizen sold one of its plants in May and has offered other assets to competitors in Brazil as it tries to cut debt. The company's woes happen in a moment of weak sugar prices, with benchmark raw sugar futures on the ICE exchange having hit a four-year low in June. ($1 = 5.5531 reais)

Former Brazil star's son, 19, who was left 'brain dead' after lorry crash on his way to first training session returns home to his family three months on from horror accident

The son of a former Brazil star has returned home three months after being declared 'brain dead' following a horror crash on the road. In March, Pedro Severino, 19, was in the front passenger seat when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a lorry on a motorway in Brazil. The crash happened at 5.21am on Monday March 4, after which Severino was taken to hospital with a critical head injury. He underwent neurosurgery at 10.50am, in a procedure that was successful however a doctor declared him 'brain dead' later that evening. Now, three months on from the incident, his parents - including former footballer Lucas Severino, who played for Brazilian sides Botafogo and Athletico Paranaense - confirmed that the 19-year-old had finally returned home. Taking to Instagram to announce the news, they wrote: 'Is there any doubt that there is God? Pedro is proof that he exists! Believe In God! Besides performing miracles, he puts people like angels, to help and encourage us! Severino played for the Red Bull Bragantino U20 team and was driving to a training session Everyone who prayed, everyone who fasted, everyone who made promises, everyone who met with God, everyone who cried, everyone who believed, everyone without exception of the hospital @unimedribeiraopreto who tirelessly didn't give up, even when the diagnosis was not favorable, thank you very much! You all saved Peter and our entire family! 'You were sent by God to protect us and renew our faith every day! Thank you, thank you! Now moving on to the next step! Rehab at home!' In the same post, the family shared images of Pedro back in his family home and smiling alongside his father, mother, brother and sister. One image showed showed Pedro with his father and brother out on the basketball court. Lucas played for Brazil with the likes of Ronaldinho and Lucio at the 2000 Summer Olympics, but never received a full cap at international level. Another footballer, Pedro Castro, 18, was in the back seat of the vehicle and was also taken to hospital as a result. The teenagers were on their way to their club's training centre in Atibaia, north of Sao Paulo, when the crash happened. Castro was discharged with minor injuries a few hours after arriving at the hospital in Americana, Brazil. Both drivers involved in the accident were breathalysed but were not found to be under the influence of alcohol. The footballers were returning from Ribeirao Preto, where they had been seeing family members. Severino played for the Red Bull Bragantino U20 team and was driving to his first training session with the club, who compete in the Brazilian Serie A. A statement from the Dr Waldemar Tebaldi Municipal Hospital said: 'For brain death to be confirmed, the patient must undergo a clinical exam by two different doctors, with at least an hour between their assessments, as well as an apnoea test and other supplementary exams. 'This process could take up to 24 hours after the protocol was started at 4:30pm. The hospital team is providing full support to the family during this difficult time.'

Bodybuilder, 38, ‘murdered wife with help from his mum using rat poison after she discovered he was having an affair'

A BODYBUILDER allegedly murdered his wife with the help of his mum after she discovered he was having a secret love affair. Luiz Garnica, 38, and his mum, Elizabete Arrabaça, were arrested on suspicion of poisoning Larissa Rodrigues in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil on Tuesday. 10 10 10 Rodrigues had just learned of her husband's affair when she died on March 22, according to the investigation. She made the bombshell discovery after finding sex toys in her husband-of-18-years' car, according to a statement provided by her cousin to the police. The 37-year-old Pilates instructor was reportedly planning to divorce her husband after uncovering his dark secret. But she died before she had the chance, after allegedly being slipped poison by her mother-in-law at the couple's apartment. Brazilian cops arrested Garnica and his mum after a toxicology test showed up with traces of chumbinho. Chumbinho is a deadly pesticide which has been illegally commercialised as a household rat poison in Brazil. On the day of Rodrigues' death, Garnica claimed that he arrived home and called out to his wife who did not respond, according to the police. He said that after searching for her in several rooms, he finally found her on the bathroom floor unconscious. The bodybuilder and orthopaedic surgeon claimed he picked her up off the floor and carried her to the bed to carry out urgent emergency procedures. When these proved unsuccessful, he called the emergency services. Medics confirmed Rodrigues' death at the scene and the case was immediately registered as a suspicious death. Head of the investigation Detective Fernando Bravo said: "His [Garnica's] involvement was quite evident to us by the way he found Larissa, she was already in rigor mortis. "And he tried to clean the apartment as if he was trying to destroy the evidence for the technical expertise." Garnica's lawyer has stated that Garnica is innocent. Garnica's mum was reportedly the last person to see Rodrigues alive the day before she died. The police claim Arrabaça called a friend to ask about the alleged poison before her shocking death, according to Globo. A representative from the investigation said: "She even called a friend who is a farmer to find out if she had this substance on her farm. "When her friend said no, she asked for a recommendation of where to buy it, but none were provided or recommended." They added: "We managed to find a witness who reported that the mother-in-law was looking for lead to buy, approximately 15 days before the death, so this gave us certainty that she, together with her son, killed Larissa." Arrabaça has denied all wrongdoing. Garnica is believed to have gone on a cinema date with his lover hours before helping to end his wife's life. Police chief Fernando Bravo revealed that they had recieved a photo of Garnica with his mistress in a 'public place," from an anonymous source. The photo led to Garnica admitting that he had been cheating on his wife and had spent the night with his unnamed lover on the night his wife is thought to have died. 10 10 It is believed that Garnica's love affair had been going on for around 18 months. Garnica posted a gushing tribute to his late wife on social media, writing: 'I love you, wherever you are. 'Know that you have made me the dearest, happiest and most loved man in the world and I want to always be your best friend, boyfriend, husband, companion, the love of your whole life, just as you are of mine.' This comes after a string of horror poisoning cases across Brazil over the past few months. A woman accused of killing three relatives with an arsenic-laced Christmas cake was found dead in her jail cell in February. Deise Moura dos Anjos, 42, was found lifeless in her cell at a women's prison in Guaiba on the outskirts of the southern city of Porto Alegre. The alleged cake killer was remanded in prison on January 6 on suspicion of three murders and three attempted murders. She always maintained her innocence, despite police branding her a "serial killer" after her arrest. Local cops had said that the evidence they had that she poisoned the deadly was 'robust.' Her mother-in-law, Zeli, baked the cake eaten by the relatives who fell ill - and it's thought Deise contaminated it with arsenic-laced flour. Zeli's sister Maida Bernice Flores da Silva, 58, another sibling called Neuza Denize Silva Dos Anjos, 65 and Neuza's daughter Tatiana Silvia Dos Santos, 43, all died within hours of eating the cake. 10 10

Pilates instructor, 37, dies in agony after being 'poisoned' by mother-in-law and cheating surgeon husband when she discovered his affair

A Pilates instructor died in agony after allegedly being poisoned by her mother-in-law cheating husband and after she discovered his affair. Larissa Talle Leoncio Rodrigues, 37, had just learnt of her husband's infidelity when she died on March 22 in the Jardim Botânico neighbourhood of Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. Her partner, doctor Luiz Antonio Garnica, and his mother, Elizabete Arrabaça, were both arrested on suspicion of causing death by poisoning on Tuesday. Rodrigues was reportedly planning on divorcing Garnica after finding out about his lover, but died at the couple's apartments after being slipped a lethal dose of a powerful pesticide by her mother-in-law, say police. Civil Police explained the toxicology report on Rodrigues' body indicated poisoning by the deadly substance commonly known as chumbinho. When the instructor's body was discovered, cops said Garnica's behaviour caught their attention. 'His involvement was quite evident to us by the way he found Larissa, she was already in rigor mortis. And he tried to clean the apartment as if he was trying to destroy the evidence for the technical expertise,' said Detective Fernando Bravo, head of the investigation. According to the police report, on March 22, Garnica claimed that he arrived home and called out to his wife who did not respond. He said that after searching for her in several rooms in the couple's home, he finally found her on the bathroom floor unconscious. Garnica claimed that as he is a surgeon, he picked Rodrigues off the floor before carrying her to the couple's bed to carry out urgent emergency procedures. But when these proved unsuccessful, he then called the emergency services. Upon the medics' arrival, they confirmed the instructor's death at the scene and case was registered as a suspicious death. Reports were immediately requested from the Legal Medical Institute and the Criminalistics Institute to determine the cause of death. The results of the first examination of Rodrigues' body reportedly came back inconclusive and indicated she had lesions in her lungs and heart, as well as 'foam mushroom' - a medical term for froth that commonly appears around the nostrils and mouth of drowning victims. On Tuesday, the Civil Police served temporary arrest warrants against the doctor and his mother after the toxicology report indicated traces of lead in Rodrigues' system. According to Bravo, Arrabaça was the last person to see Larissa alive the day before she died. The investigation also revealed that the woman called a friend to ask about the lead shot. 'She even called a friend who is a farmer to find out if she had this substance on her farm. When her friend said no, she asked for a recommendation of where to buy it, but none were provided or recommended,' he said, as per G1 Globo. 'Yesterday we managed to find a witness who reported that the mother-in-law was looking for lead to buy, approximately 15 days before the death, so this gave us certainty that she, together with her son, killed Larissa,' he added. Police are looking now investigating how Arrabaça obtained the lethal substance and the motives behind the alleged crimes. According to the police report, there are indications that Rodrigues was poisoned for days. 'There are indications that they were administered throughout the week, especially because the victim arrived and told friends that every time her mother-in-law left the house she would get sick, with diarrhea,' Bravo said. 'She had some symptoms, which today we realise, were already indicating poisoning,' says the detective'. Antonio's lover is also being investigated in the case and her mobile phone was seized by Civil Police, as well as the mother-in-law and husband's devices. According to Bravo, last week when the search and seizure warrant was served against the husband's secret partner, she was located in the apartment where the doctor lived with his wife, which stunned police. 'He went to the cinema with his lover the day before [the crime], so there are indications that he was preparing an alibi,' Bravo concluded.
