Three takeaways from Garrett Wilson's historic contract with Jets

A rather routine Monday in July turned out to be an exciting day for New York Jets fans when multiple NFL insiders broke the news that superstar wide receiver Garrett Wilson had signed a new 4-year deal with the Jets worth $130 million, $90 million of which is guaranteed. This contract also made a bit of NFL history, not for the money but for the timing. According to Rich Cimini, who covers the Jets for ESPN, this is the first time a receiver has earned more than $31 million per year on average after playing just three seasons in the NFL. Here are three takeaways for Jets fans now that Wilson has finally inked an extension. 1. The Jets are finally acting like a serious franchise Let's just be honest: there are a handful of NFL franchises that are best known for their sheer incompetence and organizational dysfunction. For years, the Jets have been one of them and the fiasco that was the 2024 season did not help their reputation. That could change soon and this contract is evidence of that. We've recently seen other teams who are also generally known for their ineptitude drag their feet in getting deals done with young, superstar receivers. Luckily for the fans, the Jets got a deal done with Wilson as soon as he was eligible for one. That's good business and a smart football decision, too. 2. Ahmad 'Sauce' Gardner is next The Jets had previously expressed an interest in getting both of their stellar first-round picks from the 2022 draft class signed at roughly the same time. With Wilson's deal now done, they can focus more intently on getting Gardner signed to an extension, which should also run well north of $30 million per year on average. 3. The youth movement in New York is taking over Unless Justin Fields has a historic breakout season in 2025, Wilson is the clear leader of this offense despite his young age. This is not a role he could take on as a rookie, nor over the last two years when NFL legend and future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers was in the locker room. But now, with a contract extension and three seasons of at least 1,000 receiving yards under his belt, Wilson is the unquestioned leader of the offense.

Glenn Clears Air on Breece Hall Trade Rumors

Glenn Clears Air on Breece Hall Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Jets running back Breece Hall has had a rollercoaster of a tenure in East Rutherford. Between inconsistencies at quarterback and offensive line, a major knee injury, and his recent struggles, Hall is in murky waters with the fanbase. Advertisement The front office and coaching staff, though, seem to be very high on Hall, even with Braelon Allen and Isaiah Adams earning significant praise. Several factors have made Hall expendable via trade. Paramount is his decline from near-elite back to a non-needle-moving starter. He's also entering a contract year, didn't separate himself from the rest of the backfield, and has enough potential to get teams interested. Nevertheless, the team isn't keen on trading him. Head coach Aaron Glenn addressed the Jets' trade rumors surrounding Hall. 'Hall's name surfaced in trade rumors around the draft,' Rich Cimini wrote. 'It got so loud that Glenn called Hall to put his mind at ease. According to Hall, Glenn told him, 'I don't want to trade you. I want you to be here. You're going to be our running back.' Advertisement 'The Jets want to be a run-oriented offense, so it wouldn't have made sense to trade their most accomplished back. It could be a different story around the mid-season trading deadline. If they fall out of contention, Hall will be a prime candidate to be dealt. We already know how much Glenn likes Allen and Davis.' Glenn looks to be on the right side of his roster, especially the stars that the team could look to extend. That starts with receiver Garrett Wilson and corner Sauce Gardner but extends to Hall. With that said, there could be a gap between Hall, who at his best is capable of setting the market, and his current trend. If negotiations go south, the rumor mill will continue to churn. It's also worth noting that quarterback Justin Fields should be a massive upgrade for Hall, allowing the Jets to run the ball more and weaponize the passer's gravity. He's in line for a rebound, and it would be quite timely for the running back. Advertisement If all goes well, there's a world in which New York extends him. However, trading Hall is a conversation New York must have if the offense sputters before the trade deadline. For now, the Jets have no losses to their name and an incentive to make their stars happy. Until that changes, New York shouldn't be expected to sell off any significant player. Jets Coach Reveals Update on Fields' Progress

Jets Coach Reveals Update on Fields' Progress originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The first rendition of Aaron Glenn's New York Jets will have a new face under center. The Jets are all-in on quarterback Justin Fields, giving him the green light to start without competition in 2025 and, perhaps, 2026. Advertisement This is ostensibly Fields' last chance to start in the NFL. Fall out of favor with a third team, and the promise of his first-round draft capital wears off. As he enters Year 5, there's only so much potential to tap into, and if he falters under the bright lights of New York, he will simply run out of opportunities. Needless to say, Fields needs to hit if he's going to prevent the team from drafting his replacement early in the 2026 NFL Draft. He's not taking that opportunity for granted. Recently, Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand revealed an update on Fields' offseason progress as he enters the most important year of his career. "He's obviously a physically talented player," Engstrand said about Fields, ESPN's Rich Cimini shared (h/t Zac Wassink). "Everybody talks about the running — well, the guy's got an arm, too, and he does a great job with that. Mentally, he's phenomenal. He's been absolutely phenomenal so far, and we expect more out of that. Advertisement 'There's just a lot of things that you can do with that type of player that's going to put stress on a defense and make that defensive coordinator stay up late at night as we get going into this thing." Fields' 2024 campaign was abbreviated. He was benched for Russell Wilson after six games and four wins, used afterwards as an extension of the ground game. In those six games, though, Fields was promising, setting career-best marks in terms of completion percentage, interception percentage, passer rating, and adjusted net yards per attempt. However, it came in a small sample with serious training wheels. New York will be a run-first team in 2025, but unleashing Fields in the dropback game is necessary to realize the unit's potential. For that, Fields must take a legitimate step. "It is just growth," Engstrand added about Fields, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "Just going through his career, just continuing to stack experience along with it and ultimately ends up winning four games out of six. You just see some of the things that are starting to develop in his game, and then you look at that and you go, 'That's pretty good, we can do some things with that.'" Advertisement With Fields under center, there's a real chance the Jets win some games with smoke and mirrors, not unlike Pittsburgh did a season ago. If he's going to stick, though, he'll have to make good on his coordinator's optimism. 'Difference Vibe' At Jets Rookie Camp With New Star

The new regime for the New York Jets under Aaron Glenn is off and running, with the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator looking to hit the ground running. With rookie mini-camp now underway, the coaching staff is getting their first look at players in the classroom and on the field as they look to get them up to speed on how Glenn wants both sides of the ball to play. Advertisement All eyes were on first-round pick Armand Membou, who has been slated to play right tackle with the offensive line seen as one of the better units in football with his addition. For ESPN's Rich Cimini, there is a whole different feel to Jets camp this offseason, with Membou in particular catching the eye. "Definitely a different vibe under Aaron Glenn than the previous staff," Cimini wrote. "Practices were more intense, and everyone participated, including draft picks. Previously, the draft picks were held out to prevent injuries. "Armand Membou (first round) took reps at RT. The first thing you notice is his quick feet. He moves like a big LB. Glenn: "He's nasty, man." With all linemen, you need to see them in pads before you break out the anointing oils (Parcells-ism)." Missouri Tigers offensive lineman Armand Membou (79) lines up against the Massachusetts MinutemenEric Canha-Imagn Images So Membou has made a good first impression under Glenn, and yes, it is only early, but that is a good sign. Advertisement When a team uses a first-round pick on a player, that comes with certain expectations, and it's clear Armand has met them, at least in the early days. It will be an interesting watch as the offseason goes on and the veterans mix in as we get to see Glenn's vision for his team come to light as he looks to turn this embattled ship around. And having a "different vibe" is a good way to start. Related: Mason Taylor 'Great Expectations' Part Of Jets Camp Related: Jets Exciting Rookie Displays Juice With 1 Major Problem
