Helen Mirren at 80: the actress' iconic looks through the decades

British actress Helen Mirren has said she is 'ageing with fun' rather than 'gracefully' as she marks her 80th birthday. The Academy Award-winning actress from London, who turned 80 on Saturday, is best known for playing Queen Elizabeth in The Queen and detective Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. She will also star in the upcoming Netflix film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, based on the book series by Richard Osman. In a recent interview with OK! Magazine, Mirren said she feels 'insulted' when people tell her she looks good for her age, adding that she finds it 'patronising'. Mirren said: 'I am not ageing gracefully at all! I hate that term – it sounds like you have to be elegant and accepting, and, no, I am not. 'We just do grow older, there's no way you can escape that. You have to grow up with your own body, your own face and the way it changes,' she added. 'It's not always easy but it is inevitable. You have to learn to accept it.' Advertisement Mirren's fearlessness has also been reflected in her bold and ever-changing fashion choices over the decades. From youthful glamour to regal sophistication, her red carpet journey is a dazzling testament to ageing on her own terms. Here's a look back at the actress' most memorable looks, from the 1960s to today. Helen Mirren at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. BBC's popular celebrity antiques show 'put on hold' after 15 years

The BBC have reportedly decided to pause a celebrity version of a popular antiques show after 15 years on air, with the show being 'rested' for the remainder of the year The BBC is rumoured to have discreetly put a fan-favourite show on hold after 15 years of broadcast. While the original programme will continue, its celebrity spin-off has reportedly been removed from the regular schedule. ‌ Celebrity Antiques Road Trip is thought to be on hiatus for the rest of the year. The show features two celebrities competing against each other as they traverse the country in search of hidden treasures to later auction off. ‌ The chosen celebrities are typically stars who are familiar with each other, or have previously worked together or competed against each other. ‌ Regrettably for viewers, the celebrity version of the show has now been put on hold. An insider told The Sun Online: "Celebrity Antiques Road Trip has proved a popular show for the BBC, but the focus right now is the original version of the show. A final decision hasn't been made on its future just yet, but it's definitely being rested for the remainder of the year and bosses will reassess in 2026." ‌ The BBC told the Mirror they were not commenting on the rumours at this time. Celebrity Antiques Road Trip first aired in 2011 as a spin-off to the much-loved staple programme Antiques Road Trip which debuted a year earlier, reports the Express. Narrated by Tim Wonnacott, the series gives two antiques experts a week's budget of £1,500 each to travel across the country - in a fabulous classic car - and purchase antiques and collectibles that are then sold at auction. ‌ Each star is teamed up with a specialist, and the celebrity pair are given a tight budget to hunt for hidden treasures. The victor is determined by who makes the most profit at an auction at the end of the episode. Famous faces that have graced the programme include Richard Osman with his current wife Ingrid Oliver, while Gemma Collins faced off against Melvin Odoom. Kelly Brook, Denise Van Outen and Danny Dyer, to mention a few.

The Thursday Murder Club, Agatha Christie and Poker Face: Why millions of us are turning to cosy crime for comfort

As fans await the arrival of the screen adaptation of Richard Osman's first novel starring Pierce Brosnan, Henrietta McKervey looks at the genre's enduring popularity A century ago, the crime fiction industry was flourishing. In 1925, Agatha Christie published her fifth book, The Secret of Chimneys, while her third Poirot novel, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd – voted the best crime novel ever by British Crime Writers' Association in 2013 – was serialised in the London Evening News. The House without a Key, by Earl Derr Biggers, launched the Charlie Chan mysteries. Whose Body?, Dorothy L Sayers' first novel to feature Lord Peter Wimsey (which, thrillingly for the time, opens with the discovery of the naked body in a bathtub) had been flying off the shelves since 1923. In 1926, Freeman Wills Crofts, the Irish railway engineer and writer later described by Raymond Chandler as, 'the soundest builder of them all when he doesn't get too fancy,' published his second Inspector French novel, The Cheyne Mystery.

Richard Osman admits he has 'long-running beef' with TV show bosses

Richard Osman has opened up about his time on Taskmaster, revealing that he has a 'long-running beef' with the show's producers after a certain incident House of Games star Richard Osman has disclosed that he harbours a "long-running beef" with the creators of Taskmaster following an episode involving another contestant. ‌ Conceived in 2010 and debuting on Dave in 2015, Taskmaster pits five contestants against each other in a series of challenges. ‌ Host Greg Davies presides over the tasks, handing out points, with the series' winner taking home a trophy. ‌ During a recent instalment of his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, Richard reminisced about his stint on Taskmaster, mentioning how he was tasked with compiling a YouTube highlight reel of his time on the show. Reflecting on the clips he chose to showcase his top moments, he mentioned: "There were a few tasks that I felt I did very well. "There's the one with the yoga balls at the top of the hill, which, even to this day, people in every country in the world ask me about at book events. So obviously, I had to have that there." ‌ Yet, he lightheartedly recounted a particular episode with comedian Jon Richardson that led to their ongoing dispute with the Taskmaster team: "Jon Richardson and I have a long-running beef with the Taskmaster producers because of the scoring system in one of the episodes." Meanwhile, reflecting on his enjoyment of his stint on the programme, he revealed that his primary goal was to make viewers "laugh". ‌ Explaining that, as a participant, he aimed to have "a couple of moments that make you look good, a couple of things that make you look bad, and then a little bit of spice at the end. And settle one score at length." Whilst his connection to broadcasting had existed for years, it wasn't until he stepped in front of the cameras in 2009 on Pointless that Richard gained widespread public recognition. Following his decision to depart the programme in 2022, he has successfully established himself as a novelist. His first book, The Thursday Murder Club, garnered widespread critical praise and reached Platinum Bestseller status.

Richard Osman says he pined for wife Ingrid Oliver for a year before meeting on the set of his BBC show - after therapist told him his 'journey would only end when he found love'

Richard Osman admits he pined for wife Ingrid Oliver over a protracted 12-month period before finally meeting her for the first time on the set of a BBC quiz show. Osman exchanged vows with the actress in 2022 following a whirlwind romance that began two years earlier, when she featured as a guest on his popular House Of Games TV series. But the presenter and author, 54, admits he was already interested in Oliver - best known for her former role as Petronella Osgood in Doctor Who - through their previous interactions on social media. 'I was aware of Ingrid from social media and thought she was very funny, but beyond a single tweet we'd never communicated,' he told the Sunday Times. 'I asked our mutual friend, the comedian Lou Sanders, to check if Ingrid was available. She wasn't. Twelve months later, in 2021, Ingrid was a guest on my quiz show House of Games. 'This time Lou told me Ingrid was available, so I spent a long day in front of the cameras desperately trying not to flirt. I made eye contact less with her than any other guest ever.' Already a father of two from a former relationship, Osman had turned to therapy in an attempt to address an addiction to food and confront his negative body image, but remained hopeful that 'the right person was out there' before finally meeting Oliver. 'I got to a point where I was happy in myself and my work but my therapist said, 'You won't finish your journey until you're in a relationship.'' he recalled. 'He was right. I've always wanted to be part of a team.' Osman and Oliver, 48, moved in together just weeks after meeting on set, but the actress admits she was initially reticent about the prospect of marriage after seeing her parents marry 'eight times in total between them' during a tumultuous childhood. She said: 'I'd seen marriages not working, so I never wanted to make that commitment unless I knew for sure.' Unbeknownst to Osman, the actress had also embarked on a failed IVF journey the year before they met. 'When Richard first asked Lou if I was single, I was. I was aware of him from Twitter and the telly, and I thought he was a lovely, kind, clever man, but I'd decided to try IVF and thought, I can't do this if I'm dating,' she recalled. 'But even then — and I don't want to sound stalkerish — I had an inkling we'd get together later. I tried IVF three times (it was brutal) before accepting defeat. When Richard got back in touch, I'd made my peace with that process and was ready to move on.' Osman previously told HELLO magazine of their meeting: 'Ingrid came on House of Games. I knew who she was through social media. We'd never met – I had never met her. I had a little twinkle in my eye, I'll admit that. 'She came on, we filmed that day together. Our first date is completely on camera. After filming, I was thinking, "How can I ask her for a drink, this is difficult."' Appearing on the Christmas Day edition of Desert Island Discs in 2022, he said: 'I'm happy with myself, I've got these beautiful kids, I've met the woman who I'm going to be with for the rest of my life. 'That thing of competition and ambition, you soon realise that rocket fuel disappears and it's about happiness and my kids bring me happiness and Ingrid brings me happiness.'
