Tipped minimum wage set to go up in Chicago July 1, and some restaurateurs aren't pleased
Chicago's restaurant workers are about to get a raise — and not everyone is happy about it. On Tuesday, July 1, the city's minimum wage will go up, along with wages for tipped workers, as part of Chicago's One Fair Wage Ordinance. At a celebration of the ordinance on Monday, the people who lobbied for it at City Hall called it "a total success." The ordinance, approved in 2023, said workers in the service industry who make below minimum wage with tips on top will eventually be brought up to the same minimum wage as the rest of the workers in the city. "My administration will remain steadfast in the passage of the One Fair Wage Ordinance — not only because it was a promise that I made, but because we know that it was the right thing to do for the people of Chicago," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. Right now, the minimum wage for non-tipped workers in Chicago is $16.20 per hour. For tipped workers, it is $11.02. Starting Tuesday, July 1, those figures go up to $16.60 and $12.62. The tipped workers' minimum wage will continue to increase 8% until matching the standard minimum wage in 2028. "Too many workers across Illinois are left behind — stuck on subminimum wages," said Richard Rodriguez, national policy director for One Fair Wage. "Immigrants, women, and people of color are the backbone of the service industry, and they deserve better." Restaurant owners are required to compensate workers who do not meet the standard minimum wage with tips. Proponents of the ordinance said not everyone was doing that. "You need to make sure that all people that wait tables or bartenders are making $16.20," said Sam Toia, chief executive officer of the Illinois Restaurant Association. "If they're not, then employers need to make that up, so nobody makes less than minimum wage. Some members of the Illinois Restaurant Association said they have closed, raised prices, or cut hours because the wage increase has forced them to tighten their finances. Eric Williams is one of them. "You have to make changes. Either you'll have to raise prices, you're going to have to cut servers, or cut down service, or both," said Williams, "and that's what we have done." At Bronzeville Winery, Williams said there has always been a 20% service charge to take care of employees. He said with the new salary increases, his budget h as increased by about $30,000 to pay the difference. "Our servers were fine the way it was, you know, and I think this idea of servers not making money is just, it is a false narrative," said Williams. "From the beginning, the very idea of what they were trying to do was not true — not rooted in any truth." The folks at Fair Wage said they hope to expand the policy statewide. Meanwhile, Toia said he is heading to speak to restaurateurs in Springfield about how this could also impact them. In Washington, D.C., which was touted as a success story for the same policy on the tipped minimum wage, Mayor Muriel Bowser has now called for its appeal.

Photo by Richard Rodriguez / Getty Images ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers rookie Kumar Rocker kept a scoreless start intact by working through an eventful fifth inning that included downing three small bottles of pickle juice, the last of which resulted in a mound visit charged to a ball boy. Create Account The 25-year-old right-hander had already chugged two bottles of the dehydration-fighting juice in the dugout as he dealt with cramping in his legs before getting the victory in a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. 'I think he broke the record on bottles of pickle juice he drank today,' Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. After Rocker struck out Michael A. Taylor for the first out of the fifth, the trainer visited the mound along with Bochy and pitching coach Mike Maddux. During the roughly five minutes the staff and the infielders were at the mound, first baseman Jake Burger went to the dugout, grabbed two small bottles of pickle juice and jogged back to the mound. Rocker quickly downed both bottles, then stretched his legs and threw several warmup pitches, with another break in between for another chat with the trainer. Rocker stayed in the game and gave up a single to Josh Rojas. With Mike Tauchman at the plate, a ball boy jogged to the mound with a third bottle of pickle juice, which Rocker promptly drank and gave back to him. Home plate umpire Marvin Hudson, the crew chief, huddled with the other three umpires, and they ruled the Rangers should be charged with a mound visit for the ball boy's trip. 'When he came out there, I said, 'Oh no,'' Rocker said. 'That was a good one. That was a different one.' Rocker retired Tauchman on a grounder to Burger, and after another trip to the mound from the trainer, Rocker got out of the inning with a groundout from Chase Meidroth. Getting through the fifth gave Rocker (2-4) a shot at being the winning pitcher. The Rangers led 2-0 when Rocker was replaced by Jacob Webb to start the sixth. 'I drank everything today,' Rocker said with a smile and a chuckle after allowing four singles and a walk with six strikeouts. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Webb gave up a solo homer to Miguel Vargas, but the right-hander and two more Texas relievers held the White Sox scoreless over the final 3 2/3 innings. Luke Jackson finished for his ninth save. Rocker was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock and started in place of right-hander Tyler Mahle on the same the day that Mahle was placed on the injured list with right shoulder fatigue. The former Vanderbilt star had been sent to the minors for development after rough starts on either side of a rehab stint. Rocker spent time on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement. Mahle's injury forced Rocker back to the big leagues earlier than planned, and he probably earned another start with his outing _ as long as he can keep himself hydrated. 'It's a great opportunity,' Rocker said. 'To help these guys, you've got to be a winning player. And just one day at a time, that's all you can do. It's been a fun week.' Create Account Rantanen, who was in the playoffs with Avalanche the past seven seasons and part of their 2022 Stanley Cup title, had his second four-point period in the series. He is only the second player in NHL history to have four points in the third period of a Game 7. The Stars move on to the second round to face top-seeded Winnipeg or St. Louis, who play their own Game 7 on Sunday night. The Jets would have home ice if they advance, while Dallas would start at home if facing the Blues. Colorado had taken a 2-0 lead when Nathan MacKinnon made a short snap shot only 31 seconds into the third period. It was the first goal he has scored in five Game 7s, but all of those are losses. Traded twice in a six-week period earlier this season, Rantanen scored five goals in the series against his former team. Rantanen got Dallas' first goal with 12:11 left on a shot from above the middle of circles. He tied the game at 2 with 6:14 left went he skated behind the net and took a wraparound shot that ricocheted off the skate of Avs defenseman Samuel Girard. Rantanen then sealed the win with an empty-netter with 3 seconds remaining. Toronto & GTA Sunshine Girls Toronto & GTA Toronto & GTA World
