Thomas Frank explains why three players missed Tottenham's win over Reading
Thomas Frank enjoyed an encouraging start to life in charge of Tottenham with a win over Reading in a friendly on Saturday, but three players missed out. New arrival Luka Vuskovic and Will Lankshear scored the goals in a 2-0 win for Spurs, while summer signing Mohammed Kudus played the second half. Frank saw a lot of his new players in action, but returning Manor Solomon, new signing Kota Takai and Richarlison all missed out on the trip to the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Explaining their absences, Frank said: 'Manor has a minor calf injury, unfortunately, nothing big. 'Kota has a minor issue, and we expect him to train next week. 'Richy has trained well, we're just building him, that's the big thing, He trained earlier today, and we expect a full training week next week and, right now, we expect him to play next week.' Richarlison has been linked with a departure from Tottenham this summer, but Frank suggests the Brazilian will play against Luton next Saturday. The new Spurs boss sounded pleased with his team's performance after an intense first week of training after his move from Brentford. 'Lots of boxes ticked, and if we look in a bigger perspective, it's been a good week, very tough and intense for the lads,' he said. 'So, a couple of good things, we've got through the week, touch wood, no injuries, everyone in a better, physical place, all the players got a good 45 minutes here, plus a good run after – the fitness box ticked. 'It's always important to keep a clean sheet, that's very important if you want to win football matches, so good aspects in that. I think it's good we scored two goals from set pieces, something we've been working hard on. 'There were elements in the game I'm happy with, elements of the high pressure, elements of the counter-press, so when we've lost it, we can bank teams in, elements of having enough players in the box… there are also bits we'd like to do better, but that's normal.' More Trending The Dane is taking over the Europa League champions as they prepare to return to the Champions League, but how far can they go this season? Frank said via the Guardian: 'What are the odds for us winning the Premier League this season? I think we're probably not the favourites. There are probably three teams at least ahead of us but we will do what we can to build a strong and competitive team. 'The first aim is that we need to be able to compete in all four tournaments and do it on a consistent level. I think 2019 was the last season where the club managed to compete in more than one competition. 'If we can compete, there's maybe a chance that you can hopefully end top. But we need to be able to build to compete first.' Hits and misses - Everton's problem position
Everton's move for Villarreal centre-forward Thierno Barry is their latest attempt to strengthen what has been a problem position since Romelu Lukaku's departure in 2017. In the last 10 years, the Toffees have signed 16 strikers at a combined cost of almost £160m – with decidedly mixed goodRicharlison, who joined from Watford for an initial £35m in 2018, has arguably been the most successful striker recruited in the last decade. Though not always used as an out-and-out number nine, the Brazilian scored 10 or more league goals in three of his four seasons on Merseyside and was eventually sold for a healthy £20m profit to Tottenham in Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, joined for a bargain £1.5m as a 19-year-old in 2016 and was a prolific scorer during Carlo Ancelotti's reign, earning England recognition. But he struggled with injuries and couldn't maintain that early promise, leaving when his contract expired this badWhen Cenk Tosun joined for £27m in 2017, Sam Allardyce described him as "the best in Europe" for his price. But Everton changed manager four months later and the Turk failed to win the trust of Marco Silva, eventually returning to Besiktas after nine top-flight goals for the Merseysiders. Moise Kean also arrived to great fanfare in 2019 following a breakout season at Juventus but netted just two Premier League goals, though the Toffees largely recouped his £25m fee when he returned to moves for Salomon Rondon, Joshua King, Enner Valencia and Armando Broja didn't pay off, while Sandro Ramirez, signed on the cheap from Malaga, quickly became a figure of ridicule amongst surprisingly, the signing with the best minutes-per-goal ratio is Oumar Niasse, who arrived from Lokomotiv Moscow in February 2016 but was initially snubbed by Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman. The Senegalese got a few more opportunities under Allardyce and bagged eight top-flight goals in 2017-18, despite starting just 10 games, before being released in uglyThe least popular recruit, by some distance, is Neal Maupay. The Frenchman scored on his second appearance after moving from Brighton for an initial £12m but that proved his only goal in 29 Premier League appearances and fans turned on him. He infamously posted a clip of the prison escape film 'The Shawshank Redemption' after joining Marseille on loan last August. A few months later, whilst technically still under contract with the Blues, he said on social media "whenever I'm having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile". He departed permanently this summer and is unlikely to be welcome at the Hill Dickinson Stadium anytime soon.

Everton transfer ambitions transformed as club today enters new era after PSR change
Everton are now in a new era of financial freedom. Today marks the beginning of a new year in terms of the Premier League's spending regulations - rules the Blues have twice fallen foul of. And with it the worst of the excess that characterised the Farhad Moshiri regime will disappear from official calculations, allowing the club to be more ambitious in the transfer market. Advertisement Top flight clubs are allowed to lose £105m over a three-year period under the league's Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), after some permitted expenses are taken into account. Failure to comply can lead to points deductions, as Everton found out when league chiefs pursued the club through two landmark cases that pushed the club to brink. READ MORE: Michael Keane transfer latest as Everton contract talks continue READ MORE: What the ECHO knows about Idrissa Gueye, Thierno Barry and Kenny Tete as Everton step up transfer plans The deductions, for consecutive breaches, did not derail Everton's efforts to avoid a catastrophic relegation but the PSR struggles have cast a long shadow over the business conducted by the club in recent seasons. Advertisement Not only were concerns over the club's position behind the sales of key players like Richarlison, Anthony Gordon and Alex Iwobi, they also led to the gutting of the academy of some of its brightest talent. When it came to incomings, the focus of recent summers has been on loan deals, free agents and, when money has been spent, on deals that have allowed the club to stagger payments over time. The need to operate with such caution is the main reason behind the threadbare nature of the squad that David Moyes enters July with. A lack of funds and a desire to drive down the wage bill has led to players being allowed to leave and the postponement of new contract talks. Advertisement The net spend of Everton under now-departed director of football Kevin Thelwell was £120m lower than any other club that was ever-present in the Premier League during his stint on Merseyside. Despite that, most recently the legacy of the first summer he oversaw - one in which the club had to rebuild after surviving on the penultimate game of the season - has been the one that proved troublesome. The spending of summer 2022 led to Everton accruing £62.7m of PSR losses - leaving little room for a transfer spree across the seasons that followed. The losses of that year will fall out of the calculation period for the three-year cycle that will be judged from July 1, opening up substantial regulatory leeway for Moyes to address his squad issues . Advertisement The positive news extends further given that the new financial year will be the first in which Everton will benefit from the increased commercial and matchday revenue driven by the move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
