People who live on Six Nations of the Grand River are being urged to test their water after elevated levels strontium were detected in some groundwater wells.
Strontium is a naturally occurring metal found in rock, soil and water, as well as products like glass, paint and fireworks.
Drinking water with high levels of strontium may pose a risk to infants because it can replace calcium in their bones and cause Rickets, a disorder that weakens bones, stunts growth and cause bone deformities.
Residents are urged not to use the water to prepare food, make baby formula, brush their teeth or wash dishes.
Testing can be booked through Six Nations of the Grand River Health Promotions by calling 519-445-2809.
Residents who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or caring for infants and children up to 24 months of age will be given priority.
