Ex-church reno'd on Grand Designs Australia could be yours
A couple who rescued an abandoned, dismantled Melbourne church and transformed it into a jaw-dropping house are selling their divine creation with $2.2m-$2.4m price hopes. Peter and Mary Riedel's journey to resurrect the property in South Gippsland was chronicled on the popular television show Grand Designs Australia. Mr Riedel said after seeing an advertisement in The Weekly Times for parts of an 1876-era Anglican Church that had been taken apart, he and his wife bought them at a clearing sale in 2009. It took two trucks to transport the ex-house of worship's various bits and pieces to an 8.34ha site at 25 Wirilda Way, Fish Creek, with frontage to Hoddle Creek. Mr and Ms Riedel then embarked on a massive renovation project. Before even starting on the house, their first task was to build a 600m-long switchback road to their address. Outdoors, they put in 8000 native plants that have since grown into mature trees. In resurrecting the church into a house, they aimed to retain its historic character. As an engineer, Mr Riedel took inspiration from old photos of the religious building from before it was dismantled. Named The Church House, the property nowadays features vaulted cedar ceilings, timber panelling, church windows, a ceiling that is 8m-high at the apex, multiple living zones, a sunroom that opens to a patio and four bedrooms with their own ensuites. A self-contained upstairs suite has another bedroom plus an ensuite, kitchenette and sitting area. A self-taught interior designer, Ms Riedel sourced the main front doors from a church in Lithuania. Indoors, a pulpit serves as a bookcase, and a blacksmith created many of the light fittings. The abode has views across South Gippsland's rolling hills and the Strzelecki Ranges. Across the property, there's a wine cellar, orchard, vineyard, olive grove, dam and walking trails. Although the house was originally designed to host the Riedels' six adult children and 16 grandchildren, in 2017 they decided to open it up as guest accommodation. 'Seventy per cent of our guests are international tourists with high occupancy between October and Easter – it's like having a dinner party every night, but you're cooking,' Mr Reidel said. Wilsons Promontory National Park is a 20-minute drive from The Church House and Melbourne is a 2.5-hour drive away. Castran director Lachlan Castran said buyers inquiring about the property included those who wanted it as a home or country retreat, while other people hope to continue operating the short-term accommodation while living on-site. 'I'm a bit of a sucker for the captivating views and also the absolute privacy that the property has,' Mr Castran said. 'With respect to the dwelling itself I think that the ceilings grab me and the sense of volume within the main room is amazing.' He added that The Church House had retained its unique character thanks to the Riedel's painstaking renovation. 'The kitchen and open-plan living and dining area is quite superb, and I think it's very sympathetic as well to the overall design,' Mr Castran said. The Church House is being sold via expressions of interest.

I Ate Atlanta's Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q on a Delta One Flight
Skip to main content Current eater city: Atlanta My mother has a rule. Every birthday, she says, you must treat yourself to something nice. This year, I skipped shopping for a bag and upgraded my seat to Delta One first class on a flight to Chile. From Atlanta, it's a 10-hour flight, so I knew it'd be worth the flat-bed seat, the wine, and of course, the local legend Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q served for dinner. Delta is Atlanta-based, so it only makes sense to offer a quintessential Atlanta dining option on its longer flights. The airline announced Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q's beef short ribs as its pick in 2022, and I've been tempted to try the in-flight meal ever since. Before you board the flight, you get complimentary Delta Sky Lounge access as a Delta One passenger, and it's worth arriving early for. The Local Flavors program showcases local restaurants in the lounge — Inman Park's Mediterranean eatery Kitty Dare is the latest Atlanta restaurant to be featured in the Councourse B and D lounges, offering dishes like seared Tunisian eggplant with harissa and dill pesto, berbere chicken over hummus, and koobideh (ground beef and lamb) with marinated feta and tzatziki. Plus, there's Champagne, beers, and cocktails you can enjoy at the outdoor deck, overlooking planes lazily rolling in and out. When you board, the seat is a private suite. It feels like a luxury car seat, with more buttons than a nail salon massage chair, for reclining modes, multiple lighting settings, and a do-not-disturb sign. (No massage features, sadly.) You're welcomed with bubbles — I picked the Taittinger La Francaise Champagne, paired with warm nuts, feeling like a starlet in the movies. Hot tip: you can bring a tin of caviar on a plane over an ice pack in a cooler bag, which I did, and enjoyed it with the Champagne. It was my birthday, after all. Having changed into my slippers and reclined in 'lounge' mode, I was ready for dinner. I had preselected my meal the day before and couldn't wait to see the local staple on an international flight. The tray arrived with the short ribs beautifully plated (at least for airplane food) — there was no hot foil to peel, no bamboo sporks. You could smell the sweet barbecue sauce right away. The steaming ribs were served slathered in it, topped with pickled red onions, next to a mound of grits made with Georgia's Sweet Grass Dairy gouda, and green beans on the side. Starters included poached shrimp with a cucumber and apple salad, a roasted red pepper bisque, and a burrata salad with farro and arugula. It was a massive amount of food for one person, and I managed to make a small dent in it. The dinner roll came with another Atlanta staple — the tiniest round of Banner Butter. I loved that everything was delivered in proper plateware — Riedel glasses and metal silverware with linen napkins — the small details that make you feel human. I didn't have high expectations after my fair share of dry-as-sand meats on a plane. But these ribs were tender to the touch and fell apart. They were seasoned well, offering a balanced amount of salt and heat. The grits helped sop up all that sauce, and so did the buttered roll. The green beans weren't soggy; they still had a crunch. I was surprised by the quality of dinner, even if it was on a bougie Delta One seat. The red pepper bisque was another standout for its creamy texture. I enjoyed the meal with a Gerard Bertrand rosé from Languedoc, France, pairing its pomegranate notes with the barbecue. Alternate main dish options included a less exciting pan-seared chicken breast with wild rice and vegetables, and a truffle and parmesan risotto with mushrooms and zucchini. I had an opera cake for dessert with a Quinta do Noval 10-year tawny port, which was fitting for a birthday. I polished off the cake with a real metal fork, giggling over RuPaul's Drag Race on the monitor, snug in my blanket and airplane socks. The air in my little suite was scented with whispers of sweet barbecue sauce. Hours into my flight flying over South America, I loved that there was a slice of Atlanta on the plane. And that felt homey. Where else can you dig into ribs on a plane than in the A? See More:

Wine with Leslie: Intriguing tastes of Nebbiolo
I've often been asked what led me to fall in love with wine, and I think it was probably just my innate hedonism. I adore the scents, flavours and textures to be found in even modest bottles of wine, and of course in great wines from say Burgundy, Bordeaux and Piedmont (to name just three of my favourite regions). What inspired this column was a fragrant and fruit-driven Nebbiolo di Langhe in Lidl this month as part of their Italian celebration. Given that my last two columns covered southern Italy, I decided I needed to give other countries a chance, so I have chosen two other wines that offer similar pleasures. Nebbiolo is rarely a bargain and this is because it is such a difficult variety to manage. Nebbiolo is picky about the soil it is planted in, it is the first variety to bud but also the last to ripen (usually mid-October). It needs a long growing season with plenty of sunshine and well-drained soils so it is particularly suited to Piedmont. You will find examples in Australia, California and almost every new world region, but none have come close to recreating the complex aromas and flavour profile of the wines of Piedmont. Nebbiolo can have scents of violets, cherry and plums but also tar, ink, and cold tea. The best Barolo and Barbarescos are fragrant, elegant and enticing, but also much more grippy and structured than you would expect from such a beguiling aroma. I'm also recommending a Spanish Mencía which can also offer intrigue and complexity, but is generally a more easy drinking wine. And of course I had to include a Bourgogne Pinot Noir which is all about the seductive scents matched with structure and acidity; even Riedel recommend the same glass for both wines. There are finer Bourgognes to try, but this one is a good place to start. Santenzo Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont; €10.99 Santenzo Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont; €10.99 Lidl This has to be the best value Nebbiolo in the country and is one of number of good Italian wines in Lidl this month (also look for Fiano and the Riccardi Chianti Colli Senesi). Blackcurrant and dark plum fruits with a touch of ink, fruity and ripe with noticeable weight and texture. Tannins are present, but they are integrated and overall this is quite the charmer. Brezo de Gregory Perez, Bierzo, Spain; €21 Brezo de Gregory Perez, Bierzo, Spain; €21 MacCurtain Wine Cellar; Sheridans Dublin and Galway Mencía has similar molecular properties to black truffles, they say, and matches them brilliantly, as does Nebbiolo. Mencía offers scents of violets and lively ripe fruits such as blackberry and cherry, but also an earthy tone. This is one of my favourites, with pastille aromas, supple and layered fruits, but with a lightness of touch and lingering red and black fruits. Louis Jadot Pinot Noir, Bourgogne, France; €32-33 Louis Jadot Pinot Noir, Bourgogne, France; €32-33 JJ O'Driscolls; La Touche; Molloys; O'Briens Pinot Noir is an obvious grape to compare to Nebbiolo and this Bourgogne version is even somewhat affordable; Jadot are big but they are consistent. Bright cherry-strawberry aromas with a hint of earth; supple, textured and lingering tangy red fruits. O'Driscolls also stock the excellent Two Paddocks & Two Picnics Pinot from NZ, both made by Sam Neil (yes, that Sam Neil). Beer of the Week 8 Degrees Brewing 'Full Irish' Single Malt IPA, 6% ABV, 440ml €3.75 8 Degrees Brewing 'Full Irish' Single Malt IPA, 6% ABV, 440ml €3.75 Bradleys; Matsons; Tesco; Independents; I first tasted this in 2014 (initially for a festival but soon brought into the core range) but have not featured it here. From Irish grown barley malted in Cork, but using New World hops (simcoe, cascade, citra and amarillo). As expected from those hops this is a hop-bomb, packed with lime and lychee fruits but with a good hit of malt on the mid palate. Perfect summer drinking.
