Port Adelaide's Hugh Jackson ‘cleared by MRO' for kneeing Brisbane champion Dayne Zorko

AFL great Nick Riewoldt has launched a scathing attack on the AFL after an incident between Port Adelaide's Hugh Jackson and Brisbane champ Dayne Zorko was only lightly sanctioned. During the third quarter of the Saturday night clash at the Gabba, Zorko was curled up over the ball and in a vulnerable position after copping a glancing blow to the head. The 22-year-old Port player was then caught on camera kneeing Zorko in the ribs as he stood over him. The 36-year-old veteran, who had received a free kick which resulted in a Lions goal, was clearly hurt and upset by his treatment. The incident was obviously looked at by the the AFL's match review officer but, incredibly, Jackson only received a tap on the wrist. The incident was graded as intentional conduct, low impact and body contact, and Jackson was fined $3000 (which can be reduced to $2000 with an an early guilty plea). Riewoldt was in shock by the outcome and let rip on his popular segment Roo's Marks on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters. 'Hugh Jackson got a B on this segment last week, this week, it's an F,' Riewoldt said. 'Have a look at the knee here into the ribs of Zorko,' he continued, as 7NEWS chief footy reporter Mitch Cleary shouted, 'fine, fine.' 'That was dirty,' Riewoldt said, 'And cleared by the MRO, Mitch ... you're right.' Riewoldt said it sent a bad message to the rest of the players in the competition. 'So get this players, you can drop your knees into a player when they're on the ground,' he said. 'Go your hardest because you won't get suspended. you'll only cop a fine. Ridiculous.' The message it sends to players in lower leagues and junior footballers is also quite bewildering. The AFL's match review officer follows a matrix, so penalties are graded more harshly when an incident is high and also when the impact is greater. But there have been repeated calls for the AFL to judge incidents on football actions and non-football actions, so players are not punished for accidents and players who engage in off-the-ball punching and striking are punished accordingly.

Wild player plan for Carlton as season hits new low: ‘Everyone is on the market'

AFL great Nick Riewoldt says every player at Carlton should be on the trade table apart from four untouchables. Carlton's season hit a serious flashpoint on Saturday when they lost to lowly North Melbourne at the MCG. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today In the aftermath, questions have been asked about every player and the coaches. And Carlton's midfield is again being questioned. While there are plenty of stars, there is a sameness about size and body shape, and there is also a lack of pace. 'What do they? They've got no first-round (draft) pick this year. They have to get creative,' Riewoldt said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters. 'We've had a look at the list. 'These are the guys that I think are untouchable. (Patrick) Cripps is the skipper. (Jacob) Weitering is his heart and soul. He's very, very difficult to replace. (Charlie) Curnow is a once in a generation (player), and Jagga Smith hasn't played and is a first-round talent. 'Outside of that, I think everyone at Carlton is on the market.' 7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary was shocked. 'Only four ... four out of 40?' he said. 'No (Sam) Walsh, no (Harry) McKay. 'This is a list that is built for the now. They've spent their money. They've gone and got (Adam) Saad. They've gone and got (Adam) Cerra, Zac Williams, they've spent their money. 'This is a team that is meant to be contending now, and you're saying they've got four untouchable players on the entire list? 'Their best six players are all between 24 and 30 got, yeah, it's not time to blow the place up.' Riewoldt stressed that it was not time 'to throw it all out' but the Blues had to offload some players to bring in some some draft picks. 'You've got to get creative and actually bring in the types of players that you need, because they've got, they've got a lot of the same player,' he said. 'You know, great ball winners through the midfield, but can they break the lines? 'They've got to get some arsenal to get some picks in. 'So love Sam Walsh. Love him as a player, love him as a person, as a leader. But he is one of the few, I think, that has currency. I'd be holding him, but his name has been mentioned. 'Harry McKay, if I could get him off my books, I think there are other clubs, like a Sydney, like a Melbourne, even Collingwood, that need firepower in front of the ball.' AFL great Lance Franklin says it's time to move on coach Michael Voss. 'There's going to be some big question marks on Vossy and whether he probably holds his job,' Franklin said on the Buddy and Shane Podcast on Monday. 'That's what I'd be looking at, because something needs to change at that club, whether it's Vossy moving on, whether they trade out some players. 'And I think there needs to be change. 'And we've said it before, we're all about the players and coaches, but I think this is a change that needs to happen. And I think it needs to happen ASAP because the messaging is not getting through.'

Christian Petracca struggling with ‘mental demons' of horrific spleen injury, Nick Riewoldt says

St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt says a worrying pattern has emerged in Christian Petracca's game since his life-threatening injury last year. Petracca famously suffered horrific damage to his spleen during the K ing's Birthday clash against Collingwood last year, which saw him taken to hospital and later transferred to ICU. WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: Christian Petracca dealing with 'mental demons' after spleen injury. He missed the rest of the year as football became a secondary priority in his battle just to regain health. On return this season, Petracca has averaged 25.3 disposals and nearly a goal a game. But Riewoldt, who last week was inducted into the Australian football Hall of Fame, says Petracca is backing out of contests — particularly aerial ones — and avoiding contact like he never used to. 'One of the big issues they've (Melbourne) got centres around Christian Petracca, and there's a real human element to this as well,' Riewoldt said on Monday night's episode of The Agenda Setters. 'He suffered the massive injury last year (on) King's Birthday where he opened himself up, we know it. 'And I've just been watching him — he's a watch, Christian. Because I think the mental demons in his head, they're rearing their head way too often.' Riewoldt showed a number of clips from this year — one of which came from Sunday's loss to Port Adelaide — where Petracca appears to shirk contact. 'Again, that's a situation, pre-injury, he's going back harder than that,' the Saints champion said as the vision played. 'It wasn't a one-off either; we've seen it all year when he has to open himself up, he just doesn't have the same intensity at the football. 'And I think it's understandable. The fear or the threat of getting hit in the same spot, I think, has become a really big thing for him.' Port Adelaide premiership player Kane Cornes said it posed a vexing question for Demons coach Simon Goodwin. 'It's a really strong pickup, and we are all understanding of this and what he's going through in his mind in that moment,' Cornes said. 'It's been about love and it's been about protection, it's getting him back, falling in love with the place, bringing his family back after the damage that was done. 'How do you possibly coach that out of his game?' Goodwin was asked about it after Sunday's game, but hosed down suggestions Petracca is still finding his feet post-injury. 'Trac's right back to his best, he'll go to every contest the way he normally would,' Goodwin said. 'He wants to be an aerial player, he wants to be a ground-ball player, but that's (the injury) well in the past and we've moved forward, and Christian's spent a lot of time working on that stuff, so he's fine.' But Riewoldt disagrees, and says it's something he needs to train, to get his confidence back. 'He is dealing with something that none of us dealt with as a player, that life-threatening injury, so I understand that there would be a trepidation around those sort of contests,' he said. 'But as a leader of a football club, I think you've just got to train it and put yourself in the position — almost get comfortable getting your arms up and taking contact again. 'Because at the moment, it looks like he's unsure about his own body in that contested situation.'

Nick Riewoldt sets staggering first in Hall of Fame honour

Star Channel 7 commentators and football champions Nick Riewoldt, Luke Hodge and Erin Phillips have been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Phillips, one of the greatest AFLW players of all time, is the second woman to enter the Hall of Fame, while Riewoldt, quite remarkably, became the first No.1 draft pick to be inducted. Riewoldt was eligible for the award two years ago but was unable to take part in the ceremony because he was living in the US. On Tuesday night in Melbourne, he was the first player at the event to be honoured with his overdue award. Riewoldt holds St Kilda's record for the most games as captain, with 221 of his 336 matches. Riewoldt said he had made his peace with not being able to help the Saints win their elusive second flag 'Rather than feeling like I walked away with the game still owing me something, I walk away feeling like the game gave me absolutely everything,' he said. After he was taken with the No.1 draft pick in 2000, the Queenslander booted 718 goals for St Kilda. He was captain of the club in 2005 and from 2007-16, and was a six-time best-and-fairest winner. Veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson congratulated Riewoldt on his amazing career. 'There he is ... our Monday night (Agenda Setters) colleague, the 300-plus gamer,' Wilson said. 'He has just been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. There he is with his family. He's got two tables there. There he is with (AFL chair) Richard Goyder. Of course, inducted two years ago, but back in Australia and able to accept the award, the first No.1 draft pick to actually become elevated into the Hall of Fame.' Kane Cornes was staggered by that fact. 'That's amazing, isn't it?' Cornes said. 'What a career. Phillips is not only the second woman inducted, but becomes the first father-daughter combination. The Adelaide and Port Adelaide star was a marquee name when the AFLW started in 2017 and she joins women's pioneer Debbie Lee, who was inducted four years ago. Phillips paid an emotional tribute to her dad Greg, and Lee, who were at Tuesday's annual induction dinner in Melbourne, in her acceptance speech. 'And 27 years later, she's standing next to you in the Hall of Fame.' Phillips thanked the 'incredible women' who made the AFLW possible and singled out Lee. 'You kicked down this door so others could walk through,' she said. 'I'm so proud to be by your side and I can't wait to kick down more doors with you Deb.' Phillips ended her stellar playing career at the end of 2022. The five-year player eligibility rule for the Hall of Fame was changed for women last year. AFLW players can now be inducted within a year of retirement and she was an obvious candidate. Her father, Port Adelaide great Greg, was inducted in 2020. Fos and Mark Williams, Hayden Bunton Sr and Jr and umpires Jack McMurray Sr and Jr are the father-son inductees. Phillips was Adelaide's inaugural captain and the first women's best and fairest winner, playing in three Crows flags despite needing a knee reconstruction. She then switched to Port Adelaide when they joined the league in 2022. When the women's league started in 2017, marquee players such as Phillips were crucial for its profile and credibility. Phillips, a former WNBA and Australian basketballer, immediately established herself as one of the AFLW's elite players. Hodge, of course, is also a No.1 draft pick and had a glittering career with Hawthorn after he was taken with the first pick in the 2001 'Super draft'. AFL great and Seven commentator Luke Hodge has been inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. He is also a three-time All-Australian, a dual Norm Smith medallist (in the 2008 and 2014 grand finals), and a two-time best-and-fairest winner. After playing for Brisbane in 2018 and 2019, he retired after 346 games. Also on Tuesday night, South Australian goalkicking machine Ken Farmer was elevated to legend status. Farmer, who died in 1982, is the SANFL's most prolific goalkicker, with 1417 for North Adelaide from 1929-41 in 224 games at an extraordinary average of 6.33 per game. He was never goalless in a game and coached the Roosters to two premierships. Seven-time East Perth premiership player George Owens was this year's first historical inductee. Apart from his swathe of premierships at East Perth and the 1925 Sandover Medal, Owens also umpired five WAFL grand finals. - With AAP
