Youth arrested for snatching Hungarian woman's mobile
Bhubaneswar: Nayapalli police on Monday arrested a 19-year-old youth on charges of snatching a Hungarian woman's mobile phone in the city last week. The accused was identified as Mohammad Rihan alias Jumma, a resident of a Nayapalli slum. Turi Virag Reka (25), an Odissi instructor from Budapest, filed a police report on July 11 alleging that two men on a motorcycle had snatched her mobile phone near the N-4 area in the upscale Nayapalli neighbourhood at 5pm. Police sources said Reka, who had arrived in Bhubaneswar three months earlier to study Odissi, was walking near Nayapalli Community Care Association when her mobile was snatched. "The theft left me panicked and worried as my phone contained crucial digital documents and two SIM cards — one Indian and one Hungarian," her complaint stated. Reka, who has been frequently visiting Odisha since the last 10 years, also said that her situation was particularly urgent as she was scheduled to depart India on Monday. "We prioritised her case due to her approaching visa expiration. We formed a three-member team for investigation and activated the property offence prevention and detection (POPD) unit," a senior police officer said. Police examined footage from about 30 CCTV cameras near the crime scene, which led them to identify Rihan. They arrested him on Monday morning and retrieved the stolen mobile phone, which was returned to Reka. "Our swift action and successful recovery of the phone enabled the foreign national to leave the country as scheduled on Monday. We are looking for Rihan's associate, who is on the run," the police officer said.

Delhi teen consumes acid after sexual assault by boyfriend, accused arrested
A girl attempted suicide by drinking acid in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a man she was in a relationship with, police said on Wednesday. The man has been arrested. The girl was alone at home when she consumed acid. (Sanchit Khanna/ Hindustan Times) The accused, Md Rehan, allegedly sexually assaulted the girl on the pretext of marriage and blackmailed her with objectionable photographs, a senior police official said. He said the incident came to light on June 18, when an MLC (medico-legal case) report was received from Spinal Injuries Hospital stating that a girl had been admitted there after she consumed acid. A police team reached the hospital, but the girl was declared unfit for recording a statement at the time. The local crime team was deployed and the scene of the incident was examined, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said. "An acid bottle was recovered from her residence. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the girl was in a relationship with a man named Rihan and it led to emotional distress," the DCP said. The girl was alone at home when she consumed acid. A neighbour noticed her in pain around 4:45 pm and rushed her to the hospital. On June 20, she was referred to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment due to the severity of her condition, he said. "Subsequently, the victim's mother lodged a complaint at Vasant Kunj (South) police station, accusing Rihan of sexually assaulting her daughter on the pretext of marriage and blackmailing her with objectionable photographs," Goel said. He said the complainant also handed over her daughter's mobile phone, which contained voice recordings allegedly supporting the allegations. According to police, the sub-divisional magistrate of Vasant Vihar was informed, and a tehsildar was deputed to record the victim's statement at the hospital. However, the girl remained unfit to record a statement. Based on the complaint, a preliminary report was submitted recommending a forensic analysis of the girl's mobile phone, police said. The forensic examination of the mobile phone confirmed the presence of voice recordings consistent with the complaint. Following this, a case was registered under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Vasant Kunj (South) police station on June 25, police said. Rehan, a resident of Shankar Camp in Rangpuri Pahari, was arrested. He has studied up to class 12 and previously worked as a loader at the airport. He is currently unemployed and his father works as a labourer, the DCP said. Further investigation is underway, he said.

Is Lebanon Close to Peace or Will It Pass It By?
'CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT'S TIME FOR PEACE!' That was US President Donald Trump's declaration during the Iran-Israel confrontation, following Iran's strike on the largest US base in the region, in Qatar. For those watching closely, it wasn't just a hopeful sentiment, it was a political signal. Soon after, US envoy Tom Barrack, made a pointed visit to Lebanon, meeting key figures amid renewed momentum around the Abraham Accords, the normalization framework that continues to reshape the Middle East. His presence raised eyebrows in diplomatic circles, and for good reason. As US advisor Witkoff recently confirmed, 'One of the President's key objectives is that the Abraham Accords be expanded and more countries come into it, and we are working on that.' The message is clear: Washington wants more Arab states on board. But how close is Lebanon to joining this evolving regional order? The question is both delicate and premature. Normalization with Israel remains one of the most politically and emotionally sensitive issues in Lebanon, a country still shaped by its history of war, occupation, and its geographic 'intimacy' with the Israeli border. While several Gulf countries have moved to normalize from afar, Lebanon doesn't have that luxury. Its situation is defined by unresolved disputes and proximity. In a n interview with political analyst Ibrahim Rihan, speaking exclusively to MTV's website, it's evident that Lebanon is not on the verge of a dramatic shift. Rihan explained that Israel and the United States have launched deliberate media and diplomatic campaigns to present peace with Israel as a natural step forward, especially since the October 7 attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made multiple references to a "New Middle East" in public speeches, echoing a narrative that normalization is both achievable and desirable. According to Rihan, these efforts are designed to influence regional public opinion and normalize the concept of peace with Israel. In many places, the taboo has already been broken, maybe not entirely, but among significant and influential segments of society. That shift is intentional. But Lebanon, he explains, remains anchored in the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which calls for land in exchange for peace and a two-state solution. That initiative, born at the Beirut Summit, still represents the foundation of Lebanon's stance. And there are complications: disputed land borders, the issue of prisoners, Israel's violations, and the unresolved status of the Shebaa Farms, which Lebanon claims, but also requires Syrian cooperation to settle definitively. Rihan emphasizes that Lebanon would only move forward with negotiations under full Arab sponsorship and with comprehensive US guarantees, especially on sovereignty and border security. Lebanon's place in the Abraham Accords, he notes, would almost certainly come last. Not just because of political resistance, but because of the country's frontline geography. "Lebanon has more outstanding issues with Israel than any other Arab state," Rihan says, 'from land to airspace, to war memory…' But there's a wildcard: Syria. Historically, Lebanon has never pursued or signed a peace agreement with Israel without Syria taking the lead. If Syria were to normalize relations Lebanon would find itself geopolitically cornered by Israel from the south and Syria from the north and west. That, Rihan argues, could compel Lebanon to reckon with a new political and geographic reality. For now, though, Lebanon stands at a crossroads, cautious and waiting. Peace may be on someone else's timetable, but for Beirut, it will never be automatic.
