AFRY plans additional tracks for railway section in Finland

AFRY Finland, in collaboration with Sweco Finland, has been commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to plan additional tracks for the railway section between Hyvinkää and Riihimäki. This railway expansion project is set to enhance both passenger and freight traffic on the nation's busiest railway line. The assignment involves the planning of another western track and a freight traffic track extending from the Hyvinkää station to the Riihimäki freight yard. AFRY is tasked with comprehensive planning responsibilities, including railway and road planning, environmental, civil, and municipal infrastructure planning, project management, geotechnical engineering, and bridge and structural engineering. As part of the project, the company will plan seven bridges along the railway, complete with their retaining walls and pile slabs. This work falls under a four-year framework agreement with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, which extends to 2027. AFRY Transportation Finland director Mikko Inkala said: 'AFRY is well-positioned to lead the planning of this project. Our familiarity with the site, gained from managing its previous planning phase, ensures a seamless transition to the current phase. 'This project highlights AFRY's expertise in complex railway design, as well as our industry-leading capabilities in geotechnical and bridge engineering.' The planning phase for this construction project is expected to continue until the end of 2026, with construction commencing thereafter. Earlier in the year, AFRY secured the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel in Switzerland via the Tram Ticino consortium. Additionally, last year, the company embarked on the design of a waste-to-energy facility near Mělník in the central Czech Republic.
