Nationals C Keibert Ruiz lands on IL with head contusion
June 25 - One day after he was hit in the head by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout, catcher Keibert Ruiz was placed on the injured list by the Washington Nationals on Tuesday with what the team is calling a head contusion. Washington called up Drew Millas from Triple-A Rochester to replace Ruiz on the roster. Teammate Josh Bell's foul ball hit Ruiz on a bounce and the catcher placed both hands on his head and immediately left the bench. Riley Adams replaced him behind the plate. After Washington's 10-6 win over the host San Diego Padres, manager Dave Martinez said the 26-year-old Ruiz was headed for a CT scan. "The ball hit him pretty solid," Martinez said. "He had a nice lump on the side of his head." Ruiz has played in 66 of the Nationals' first 79 games this season. He has hit .248 with two homers and 24 RBIs, though he has struggled in June with a .167 average. Millas, 27, likely will serve as the backup behind Adams. This is Millas' first stint with the team this season after hitting .259 with two homers and seven RBIs in 31 games for Washington in 2023 and '24. In 22 games this season, the 28-year-old Adams entered Tuesday hitting .097 with three homers and eight RBIs as Ruiz's backup. --Field Level Media

Nats catcher Keibert Ruiz leaves game after apparently getting hit in head by teammate's foul ball
SAN DIEGO — Washington Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz left Monday night's game against the San Diego Padres after apparently getting hit on the head by a foul ball hit by teammate Josh Bell. Ruiz was immediately tended to and left the dugout. He was replaced by Riley Adams. There was no immediate word on the extent of Ruiz's injury.

Nationals stop 11-game skid as Wood hits second 2-run homer in 11th for 4-3 win over Rockies
WASHINGTON — James Wood hit a pair of two-run homers, including a game-winning shot in the 11th inning, and the Washington Nationals snapped their 11-game losing streak Thursday with a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. With one out and automatic runner Riley Adams on third, Wood drove a 1-0 pitch from Seth Halvorsen (1-2) to center field for his 20th home run — giving the Nationals only their third win in 17 games this month.

(AP Photo/Nick Wass) WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez bristled Saturday when asked how much of his team's recent offensive struggles should be apportioned between players and his coaches after the 4-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. 'It's never on coaching,' Martinez said. 'Never on coaching. Coaches work their (butts) off every single day. We're not going to fingerpoint here and say it's coaches. It's never on the coaches. They work hard. The message is clear. All the work is done prior. So, sometimes, they have to go out there and play the game. It's always been about the players. Always.' Advertisement The Nationals have lost seven in a row, tied for their longest skid of the season. They've averaged 2.5 runs while going 2-10 in June and are a season-high 10 games under .500 at 30-40, two games ahead of the last-place Marlins in the NL East. Martinez led Washington to its first World Series title in 2019, but the Nationals struggled to a 26-34 record in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The club began a rebuild at the trade deadline in 2021, and has not finished higher than fourth in the division in the last five years. Martinez is 493-609 in eight seasons. 'I played this game a long time,' Martinez said. 'Never once have I blamed a coach for anything. We worked our (butts) off to get better, they gave us information and we used it. These guys understand what the game is, man. I never had a such a group of coaches that work as hard as they do.' Advertisement Washington's offensive issues have been particularly acute this month. The Nationals rank last in the majors in runs (30), walks (23), on-base percentage (.267) and slugging percentage (.304) in June and are 29th in both home runs (six) and batting average (.216) over the last two weeks. They have scored more than three runs in a game only twice this month. The Nationals went 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position Saturday, including Amed Rosario's flyout and James Wood's pop out with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to end the game. The Marlins scored their fourth run when Washington second baseman Luis García Jr. dropped a pop fly with two outs in the eighth inning. 'These coaches, they work their (butts) off,' Martinez said. 'And I know every coaching staff is like that. And the players know. Sometimes you have to put the onus on the players and they have to go out there and they have to play the game and play the game the right way. We can't hit for them, we can't catch the ball for them, we can't pitch for them, we can't throw strikes for them. They've got to do that.' ___ AP MLB:

Miami clinched its sixth series victory of the season and first since taking two of three from the Los Angeles Angels on May 23-25. The Marlins have won consecutive games for the first time since May 24-25. Advertisement Washington dropped its seventh in a row, matching a May 6-13 skid for its longest of the season. The Nationals scored two runs in the ninth off Anthony Bender — one on a wild pitch, another on a misplayed grounder — and had the bases loaded with none out. But Bender got Amed Rosario to fly out to shallow left, and Calvin Faucher earned his seventh save when he induced James Wood to pop up to shortstop. The Marlins used three pitchers to cover the first 2 1/3 innings before giving way to Janson Junk (1-0). The right-hander allowed only two baserunners in 5 2/3 shutout innings, the longest outing of his career. He earned his second career victory and first since July 27, 2022, when he was with the Angels. Miami managed only a run on Liam Hicks' third-inning RBI single in the first five innings against Washington starter Trevor Williams (3-8). Hicks and Otto Lopez opened the sixth with singles, and two batters later Eric Wagaman poked a single to right off reliever Brad Lord to give the Marlins a 2-1 lead. Miami added another run in the eighth when Nationals second baseman Luis García Jr. dropped Javier Sanoja's two-out pop up, allowing Kyle Stowers to score.
