Support a superheroic cause at ‘Superman' charity screening

Brothers Pranava (left) and Visaghan Shanta Mohan hope to raise more awareness about Hospis Malaysia and its palliative-care efforts. (Pranava Shanta Mohan pic) PETALING JAYA : You don't need to be Clark Kent to make a difference. Experience thrilling superhero action while supporting a meaningful cause with The Ripple Effect 5.0, a charity screening of the new 'Superman' movie at TGV Jaya Shopping Centre here this Saturday (July 12). Organised by brothers Visaghan and Pranava Shanta Mohan under the Asia Weaves charity initiative, the event – now in its fifth year – is aimed at raising funds for Hospis Malaysia. 'Since we started, we've had the privilege of meeting patients and families whose lives have been profoundly touched by Hospis Malaysia's compassionate care. These encounters have only strengthened our resolve to support them however we can,' Pranava told FMT Lifestyle. 'This year, as always, our goal remains to raise both public awareness of Hospis Malaysia and palliative care, as well as to raise funds to sustain their operations.' Visaghan started the Ripple Effect Charity Fundraiser in 2019 after his late neighbour and family friend, K Jegadeva, passed away from cancer. Thanks to palliative care, he was able to live his last days with comfort and dignity. 'Before his passing, Uncle expressed a heartfelt wish to raise funds for the centre, a cause that deeply resonated with him. Over time, we've come to realise that the story of Hospis extends far beyond our personal connection,' Visaghan explained. 'Their unwavering support, compassion, and impact on countless families have inspired us to continue this mission – not only in Uncle's memory but also in honour of every life they touch.' Inspired by their late family friend Uncle Jegadeva, Visaghan set out in 2019 to raise funds for Hospis Malaysia. According to the brothers, 80% of Hospis Malaysia's total costs go to patient-care services – such as home visits by its clinical team – to assess and support them in managing pain and symptoms. This service is provided completely free of charge. Hospis Malaysia also provides medication and medical equipment to the terminally ill. The first iteration of the Ripple Effect fundraiser, a charity screening of 'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker', raised over RM27,000. This was followed by versions 2.0 and 3.0 in 2020 and 2021, respectively, which saw funds raised through online Christmas and New Year bazaars. In 2023, the Ripple Effect 4.0 successfully raised RM13,100 – RM100 above their target! – through a charity screening of 'Barbie'. This time around, Visaghan and Pranava do not have any fundraising goal in mind: they simply hope to sell every seat, 238 in all. Thanks to sponsorship from Brickfields Asia College, 100% of the event's profits will flow directly to Hospis Malaysia. Additional donations are more than welcome. The brothers believe 'Superman' to be the ideal film for their fundraiser as the superhero and the film's themes resonate across generations. 'It brings people together for a fun, action-packed evening while reminding us of the power of hope and doing good,' Visaghan said. 'Most importantly, it allows us to unite for a meaningful cause in a lighthearted and memorable way.' The brothers believe 'Superman' is the ideal film as it will resonate with viewers of all ages. The Ripple Effect 5.0: charity screening of 'Superman' When: Saturday, July 12 @ 7pm Where: TGV Jaya Shopping Centre, Jalan 14/17, Seksyen 14, 46100 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Tickets are RM100, with all proceeds going to Hospis Malaysia. Donations can be made to Hospis Malaysia, Maybank account 5141 3212 1211. Please use the reference 'Superman'. Kindly transfer monies directly to Hospis Malaysia and send the transfer slip to 017-569 4987 with your name, IC number and address to obtain a tax exempt receipt. Use this receipt to claim your ticket at the venue on the date of the screening.

Country park tunnel gets mural to deter vandalism

A mural has been unveiled at a country park in an attempt to deter graffiti. Ripple Effect by Emma Garness has been painted in a pedestrian tunnel at Hessle Country Park and celebrates the surrounding land and water. It was designed in consultation with the Friends of the Humber Bridge Country Park group and the Humber Rescue lifeboat group. The area around the Humber Bridge has been plagued by vandalism, including memorial benches being damaged and a newly-installed flood barrier being smashed. The mural was painted by students from Malet Lambert School, Hull, and members of Gilberdyke Youth Club. Ms Garness said she was thrilled with the pupils' work. "They were all a massive help, and as a group they were a force of nature," she said. An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesperson said: "In our experience, other sites benefitting from a mural rarely, if at all, suffer from more incidents of graffiti, meaning that there is a long-term improvement to the visual amenity of the area and no cost to the public purse in removing it." Lyn Healing, the council's cabinet member for housing and public protection, said the authority was committed to tackling issues such as graffiti. "This is a fantastic initiative and it's great to see so many volunteers play an active role in improving our communities," she said. Blueprint Acquires SANIL, Forging NIL Collective Force Among Rivals

On Wednesday, NIL collective operator Blueprint Sports announced that it was acquiring its competitor Student Athlete NIL (SANIL), bringing the name, image and likeness activities of 70 Division I programs—and a combined nine figures of annual NIL deal flow—under one roof. The deal establishes a formidable force in the athletic department third-party space, positioning Blueprint to expand its corporate ambitions even further. More from Paige Bueckers Uses 'Ripple Effect' to Shape Business Strategy Georgia, Alabama NIL Bills Could Face Legal Challenges Former NCAA Investigator Launches Athlete Arbitration Forum Blueprint and SANIL have worked off a similar business model, charging service fees for handling the logistical work of managing NIL donations to collectives and distributing funds to athletes. While Blueprint primarily served for-profit collectives in Power Four schools, SANIL focused on Group of Five institutions, many of which were organized as nonprofits. In an interview, Blueprint CEO Rob Sine told Sportico the merged company will offer distinct services for both Power Four and Group of Five schools, including new agreements with universities to serve as their NIL service agency. 'We aim to integrate every one of our 70 schools into this model moving forward,' Sine said. Wednesday's announcement comes less than seven weeks before the House v. NCAA settlement goes before a judge for final approval, paving the way for schools that opt into the agreement to pay their athletes a combined $20.5 million next year. Come July, the NCAA will allow its members to directly engage in NIL deals with athletes. In anticipation of these developments, schools across the country have been actively trying to adapt to a new financial framework, hiring athletic department 'general managers' and creating other positions more familiar to pro sports teams' front offices. Blueprint hopes to further capitalize on the demand for outside expertise to supplement its staffing changes. The Blueprint-SANIL merger serves as just the latest example of consolidation among NIL companies. In November, sports software provider Teamworks acquired Basepath, the NIL platform that had served as the backend tech apparatus for Blueprint Sprint. (Blueprint will now utilize SANIL's tech platform.) Sine noted that there had been ongoing, though intermittent, discussions between the two companies over the past six months, which commenced after SANIL founder Jason Belzer stepped down as the company's CEO last July and was succeeded by Chris Brown. As part of the merger, Brown will now become chief operating officer of Blueprint. While CEO, Belzer publicly called out Blueprint's controversial relationship with a sister nonprofit, the BPS Foundation, which enabled donors to receive tax deductions for their contributions that ultimately went to for-profit collectives. Sine, in addition to serving as CEO of Blueprint, had been the foundation's president. 'That is a business decision they made, and if they are making a profit, that is great,' Belzer told Sportico for a story published last January. 'But we don't view that as a long-term sustainable business opportunity, and if we feel something is not ethically aligned with our long-term business strategy, we are not going to engage in that business today or tomorrow.' The BPS Foundation dissolved last year after informing donors that it had received letters of inquiry from the IRS and multiple state attorneys general. According to its 2023 tax return, the foundation paid Blueprint Sports a seven-figure service fee that fiscal year. Sine suggested the acquisition might not have occurred if not for SANIL's leadership change, noting differences in strategy with Belzer. 'The former CEO had done a good job of establishing the company, but he and I didn't see eye-to-eye on everything,' Sine said. Belzer, aside from being a shareholder, will not have a role in Blueprint. Despite earlier reservations, Belzer expressed support for the union when reached by phone Wednesday. 'There are no entities that have done more true NIL deals than SANIL and Blueprint,' Belzer said. 'It only makes sense to bring them together to give the best offerings and best data.' He said the 'ultimate goal' for Blueprint now is to fully capture every NIL dollar that isn't flowing directly through a school—and that it was primed to do this. Blueprint remains in acquisition mode, with Sine stating, 'We're looking for key pieces of data and services.' Left to be seen is how this merger stirs the rest of the college sports marketing industry, including multimedia rights (MMR) companies like Learfield and Playfly. 'In a perfect world, I want to be complementary,' said Sine. 'But [the merger] also creates new waves of selling and generating revenues. We understand how to do corporate sponsorships for athletes, which we think is different from [MMR companies] traditionally selling (school) marks.'(This story has been updated in the first paragraph to summarize the total market share for the combined entity.)
