"We lived the dream": Pant, Axar celebrate one-year anniversary of India's memorable T20 WC title win

New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Axar Patel celebrated the one-year anniversary of India's famed T20 World Cup 2024 triumph in Barbados. On June 29, 2024, India lifted the coveted T20 World Cup title for the first time in 17 years. After putting up a competitive 176/7 on the board, India flirted with danger and floundered in its approach to follow the blueprint for successfully defending the total. However, the Rohit Sharma-led side stayed in the contest to deny the Proteas with a seven-run triumph. Pant took to Instagram and posted a picture of himself lifting the title and wrote, 'What a moment'. Axar shared a video of himself celebrating the trophy success with his teammates and captioned it, 'One year ago, we lived the dream.' In the pulsating final of the marquee event, India and South Africa landed in Barbados unbeaten, with hopes of ending the quest on a memorable note. The coin spun in India's favour during the time of the toss, and Rohit decided to put South Africa in a position to chase. After India was reduced to 34/3, batting maestro Virat Kohli and Axar raised a priceless 72-run partnership before the latter was dismissed on 47(31). Virat continued to extend his stay at the crease and switched through gears after celebrating his half-century. With his enchanting strokeplay, he blew away the South African bowling unit and returned with 76(59). Shivam Dube's swift 27 from 16 deliveries propelled India to 176/7. In reply, Quinton de Kock (39) and Heinrich Klaasen (52) decimated India's hopes of winning the title. With the equation down to 26 off 24 deliveries, a spirited pace bowling performance came to India's rescue. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh emerged as the prime architects of the Proteas' downfall. With 16 needed in the final over and David Miller on strike, Pandya began his over with a wide full toss that Miller dispatched down the ground through the aerial route. Suryakumar sprinted to his left from long-off and grabbed the ball. He lobbed it in the air as momentum took him past the boundary rope and then came back inside the field to complete a catch that determined the fate of the title. The troika chained South African batters and escaped with a narrow seven-run victory to end the ICC Trophy drought. (ANI)

After ‘stupid, stupid, stupid' moment in Australia, Rishabh Pant shut off his phone, began ‘most intense training'

Rishabh Pant made a name among the greats of the game as he became only the second wicket-keeper batter in the history of the game to score a a century in both the innings of a Test match. The left handed batter registered scores of 134 and 118 in the two innings of the match but his efforts eventually went down in vain as India failed to defend a total of 371 in the fourth innings. Pant, however, has had a remarkable turnaround having gone from a rare poor spell of form in Test series against Australia earlier in the year to warming the bench in the Champions Trophy and later failing to score big in his maiden outing as the captain of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. In Australia, Pant managed to score only 255 runs at an average of 28.33 in the five matches. His innings included just 24 boundaries and 6 sixes which is a rarity for the southpaw who often takes the attack to the bowlers in the longer format of the game. According to a new report by The Times of India, Rishabh Pant realised that something was wrong with his batting after failing with a ramp shot in the first innings of the Melbourne Test — a dismissal which later became infamous due to former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar's comment "Stupid, stupid, stupid". From then until he finally demonstrated his true potential in the Leeds Test, it was a long journey for Pant, who had already experienced many highs and lows in his career. In March 2025, the batter uninstalled WhatsApp from his phone and kept his phone switched off unless he needed to contact someone. This was reportedly an attempt to remove the clutter from his mind after going through a chaotic cricketing season. The batter also went through a 'punishing' routine after being benched from the Indian team during Champions Trophy which was described by Soham Desai, India's strength and conditioning coach till before the England series. Speaking to TOI, Desai said, 'He did the most intense sessions, day in and day out. He dragged me into the gym whenever he was free. He didn't care about fatigue or workload programmes. All he said was he needed to keep working on himself. On the day of the final, he came to me with some kind of guilt in his mind and asked if he could take the day off. I said it was high time that he did,' 'Pant has so much in reserve that he will be fine for at least a year without having to do anything extraordinary. That's why you see him moving around so well despite scoring two hundreds and keeping wickets for so long in the Headingley Test,' he added.

Rishabh Pant Turned Off Phone, Deleted WhatsApp: Indias Star Batter Punished Himself For Stupid, Stupid Act Before Epic Test Comeback

Rishabh Pant roared back to form in sensational fashion with back-to-back centuries in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter smashed 118 and 104 across two innings, single-handedly carrying India's fight with the bat. Despite his heroics, India lost the match by five wickets, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Still, Pant's aggressive stroke play and resilience under pressure were among the few positives for India from the loss. From Australia Failure to England Fireworks Pant's resurgence comes after a disappointing run in the earlier Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2025 in Australia. Over five Tests, the left-hander managed just 255 runs at a poor average of 28.33 — a far cry from his usual standards. His innings were dotted with uncharacteristic misjudgments, with the most talked-about moment being his ill-timed ramp shot during the Melbourne Test that led to his dismissal. The shot triggered sharp criticism from Sunil Gavaskar in the commentary box, whose 'Stupid, stupid, stupid' reaction went viral on social media. It was a turning point for Pant, who took the harsh words to heart and chose a path of complete introspection and self-discipline. Extreme Measures After Melbourne Debacle According to reports, Pant responded to the Melbourne criticism by drastically altering his routine. He uninstalled WhatsApp and switched off his mobile phone to avoid distractions and channel his focus solely on improving his game. India's former strength and conditioning coach Sohum Desai revealed to Times of India that Pant immersed himself in intense training. 'He did the most intense sessions day in and day out. He dragged me into the gym whenever he was free. He didn't care about fatigue or work-loaded programmes. All he said was he needed to keep working on himself.' Desai further noted Pant's physical resilience: 'Pant has so much reserve that he will be fine for at least a year without having to do anything extraordinary. That's why you see him moving around so well despite scoring two hundreds and keeping wickets for so long in the Headingley Test.' India's Spark Amid Defeat Pant's turnaround not only showed his mental toughness but also served as a reminder of his value to the Indian Test team. With centuries in both innings, he became only the second Indian wicketkeeper to achieve the feat in a single Test and the first to do so in an overseas match. Even though India ended up on the losing side, Pant's form will be a key factor as the series progresses.
