Church donates care packs to Durban North SAPS

THE Rivers Foundation, the charitable arm of Rivers Church in Glenhills, recently donated 20 care packs to the Durban North police station for children who are victims of abuse or assault. Each care pack contains a colouring book, crayons, something to eat, and either a crocheted teddy bear or a 'lovie' comfort blanket with a crocheted character on it. Fathima Naidu, who heads up the Foundation in Durban North, said they hope to extend the programme to incorporate the Greenwood Park police station. As we were getting to the end of our blanket drive, a member of the church and the police station, Warrant Officer Madhu Moodley, and I started a conversation about this initiative. She told me about the children that come through the station and we came up with the idea for the care packs. 'We feel this is an initiative where we can impact children in the community, who are victims of abuse or domestic violence or just any child coming through the station. Oftentimes the police station can be a scary space for a child so this was our way of helping out,' she said. Spokesperson for the police station, Sergeant Nonhlanhla Shozi, said she was blown away by the generosity. 'We didn't expect this generous offer from the church and to hear they will help us where the need arises is very special. At the station we have a victim support room as well as a Gender Based Violence (GBV) consultation room and these care packs will help vulnerable children. It helps take their minds off the trauma they have experienced,' she said. For more from Northglen News, follow us on Facebook , X or Instagram. Glen Hills church stitches for charitable causes

A GLEN HILLS church recently used their creative talents to give back to a children's home, babies' homes as well as a shelter for abused women and children. Rivers Church recently handed over 66 blankets to the Durban Child & Youth Care Centre in Berea. In the past the church has crocheted and donated blankets to the St Thomas Children's Home, The Baby Home Durban North, the Domino Babies' Homes, and the Sahara Shelter for Abused Women and Children. 'The Crochet project started early last year when we realised the children at our beneficiary children's homes didn't have proper blankets for winter. The ladies from the Foundation team wanted to make blankets for Mandela Day, and our initial goal was 67. But everyone got so inspired that we ended up making and handing over 96 blankets. Seeing how much the blankets meant to the children after that first handover really motivated us. 'The team decided to make blankets for the 66 children at the Durban Child & Youth Care Centre. Each blanket was handmade with love and personalised with the child's name on a waterproof label, making it extra special for each child. Giving back to the community is really important because it helps make a difference in people's lives and creates a stronger, more caring environment for everyone. The impact is visible in happier, healthier children and a sense of hope for the future,' she said. For more information on the church's crochet programme contact the church on 031 563 6801.
