Shocking Moments When People Realized They Were In Cults
A cult typically consists of a group of people who follow a strong leader or strict beliefs, and its members are heavily controlled. This includes everything from how they think, act, and even who they talk to. People describe being in cults as feeling like they're in a close-knit community at first, but eventually, it becomes clear that leaving isn't an option. Today we are rounding up responses from former cult members who described their experience after Reddit user u/relatee asked: "Former cult members of Reddit, at what moment did you go, 'Oh fuck, I'm in a cult?'" "Watching my grandma, who is the matriarch of my extended family and our family's glue, struggle to pay tithes AND offerings every week, regardless of how much of a difference it would have made to her vs. our rather large church. My grandma paid for her meds in change on a Monday while I watched our preacher get into a brand new, black and chrome Yukon Denali the Sunday prior. It didn't make sense." "When I saw the leader pimp slap one of the followers and cut up a piece of 'holy' art." "When the prophet snapped a crying toddler on the side of the head to get him to shut up, then demanded that children be kept out of earshot, a thousand yards away. Great compassion my ass. (Not to mention, he got drunk every night while he taught.)" "When I was told that proceeding in a ceremony and receiving a gift that was a religious rite of passage to adulthood would require me to take upon myself certain sacred obligations, and I could not know them beforehand. I could either leave them in front of my family or essentially sign a blank check to swear any oath required of me later on." "When they said I'm going to marry someone from Korea. When I said 'no,' they said they already bought the plane tickets." "When I was told I couldn't ask questions. I was 14. All that did was make me ask more questions. I ended up at the public library reading up about cults. (This was in the 90s)." "I was accidentally in a religious cult. I would see how the pastor would treat non-members and members who didn't comply with what he wanted. I would think, 'I hope he doesn't start acting this way towards me.' He would berate people, gossip, expect us to stay at his house until late hours, forbid us to hang out with non-members, and he even asked me to move in when I already had my own place. I noticed it was a cult when I told them I was hanging out with an old friend, and they proceeded to ask why, because they were my friends. I came to a service the following Sunday, and the pastor saw me and said, 'I had a message I was going to preach, but I'm going to preach a different message today.' The whole service was pretty much him talking shit about me and making rude jokes..." "When they stopped allowing children who had gay parents to be baptized." "One of the leaders said that we shouldn't watch any TV or read any material that wasn't published by the church. I said, 'Well, I just like 'Road and Track' magazine, I don't think that's anti-religious. He replied, 'That material will cause you to lust after material things, and you shouldn't read that.' It was at that point that I knew I had to get the hell out of there." Were you in a cult? YouTuber MrBeast Crashed a Formula E Race Car in Miami
MrBeast's latest lap on the race track didn't exactly go as planned. The YouTube star, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, crashed Formula E's electric GEN3 Evo race car he was driving at an event in Miami last week, Road and Track reported. Though he lost control of the car and spun into the wall, the content creator wasn't injured, and the car was not too badly damaged, either. More from Robb Report F1 Might Bring Back V-10s and Their Famous Noise Gordon Murray Says It's Easier to Win an F1 Championship Than Le Mans-Here's Why F1 Drivers Could Now Face a One-Month Ban for Offensive Language Donaldson hopped into the lime-green racer to take part in Formula E's Evo Sessions event. Held at the Miami International Autodrome, the gathering brought together 11 of the world's 'most-followed' personalities, including Brooklyn Peltz Beckham, Tom Felton, and sports content creator Theo Baker, to test out the GEN3 Evo. And MrBeast was off to a good start on the first lap in the race car—which has German driver David Beckmann behind the wheel during Formula E events—not far behind a Porsche Taycan Turbo GT safety car. Then, coming out of a left-hand turn in sector 1, the social-media star spun the car 360 degrees and hit the wall, Road and Track reported. Donaldson jumped out of the car, and the session came to an end after the race car was taken back to the pits. It doesn't seem like anyone was too phased by Donaldson's crash on the track. though. According to an Instagram post from Formula E captioned 'Oops,' MrBeast had a huge smile on his face after the incident. The GEN3 Evo has some pretty crazy stats behind it, with a zero-to-60-mph time of just 1.82 seconds. That's 30 percent faster than a current Formula 1 car, according to Formula E, and makes it the quickest accelerating single-seat race car in the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (the governing body of motorsports). And the model is touted as the world's first net zero carbon race car, thanks to its electric batteries with an output of 400 kW. It's also the first Formula E race car to have all-wheel drive, which enhances both performance and strategy, and is the fastest model to date with a 200 mph top speed, the company says. As for the brand behind the race car, Formula E got its start back in 2011, where the idea for an all-electric street-racing series came to life during a discussion between founder Alejandro Agag and former FIA President Jean Todt in Paris. Now a host to 12 teams and 24 drivers, the race made its debut in 2014, in Beijing's Olympic Park. The race's 11th season is currently underway, with the next race set for April 12 in Miami. Hopefully, those drivers will have much better luck on the track than MrBeast did.
