Irish winger Mikey Johnston on brink of historic move to Brazilian giants
For most of history Irish players have rarely ventured past the British Isles for their football. With the proximity and similar sporting culture, Irish footballers have always assimilated well into British football, but in recent years that's begun to change. However with the current Brexit rules making it more difficult for Irish players to move to Britain at a young age, we've started to see more move across Europe. Mikey Johnston of Republic of Ireland Pic: Ben McShane/Sportsfile Some noteworthy examples are the likes of Troy Parrott in The Netherlands with AZ Alkmaar, Matt Doherty's brief spell at Atletico Madrid and Gavin Bazunu in Belgium at Standard Liège last season. We've even seen Irishmen take managerial jobs in Europe like Robbie Keane in Hungary. However it's even rarer to see an Irish player in South America, but that could be about to change. Born in Glasgow, Johnston came up through the Celtic academy and chose to declare his allegiance with Ireland back in 2023. His skills and exciting play made him an instant favourite among fans and after struggling to find regular game time at Celtic, Johnston made the move to England to play for West Bromwich Albion in the Championship in 2024 after he made his Ireland debut. He too became a fan favourite at The Hawthorns and has bagged 10 goals in just over 60 games for the Baggies before one of the most sensational transfer rumours in Irish football history popped up over the weekend. ‘Real Tottenham player' – Jack Grealish tipped for shock Spurs transfer by manager they could meet in Champions League
ROBBIE KEANE has urged Spurs to sign Jack Grealish - because he is 'a real Tottenham player'. England star Grealish, 29, has no future at Manchester City after being frozen out by Pep Guardiola. 3 Everton are among the clubs considering a move for the former £100million man, but former Spurs man Keane wants his old club to win the race. Speaking to bookmakers betway, the 44-year-old said: 'I love Jack. 'I think he's a wonderful football player, and he's a real Tottenham player with the way he plays and moves on the pitch. 'I really think that he could fit into the Tottenham team, whether he plays on the left, as a high No. 8 or as a No. 10. I'd definitely be hoping for that move to happen.' Keane, who is manager of Hungarian side Ferencvaros, believes Spurs need at least 'two or three' new signings, prioritising a holding midfielder. Should Cristian Romero leave, then another centre-back would also be on Keane's shopping list. Thomas Frank wants another winger and is very keen on both Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace and his old Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, who netted 20 goals last season. Former Liverpool and Leeds star Keane added: 'Bryan Mbeumo is one who I think could come and fit in well. 'He's had a good season, scored some goals and got some assists, and now has teams like Man Utd looking at him. "I'd expect him to do very well at Spurs.' 3
