Why St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson is 'concerned' by Killian Phillips form

The Republic of Ireland international has made a positive start to the new season. Stephen Robinson yesterday admitted in-form Killian Phillips could already be playing his way out of Paisley. The all-action midfielder bagged a brace as St Mirren beat Ayr United 2-1 to qualify for the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup as group winners. Phillips has been a revelation since arriving at the SMiSA Stadium — with last season's loan move from FA Cup winners Crystal Palace becoming permanent this summer. He landed a haul of player-of-the-year awards before becoming a full Republic of Ireland international when he came off the bench against Senegal and started at Luxembourg. Buddies boss Robinson knows the only way is up for the talented 23-year-old and he believes he will keep on getting better. 'If he keeps scoring goals that will be a real concern for us — but a good concern,' the gaffer said. 'He has continued on from where he left off last season with his form and energy. He is a driving force in the team. 'He is turning up with goals in big games and long may that continue. When you are training [internationally] with different players from different backgrounds who have different managers, it helps your education and learning process. 'But he is a very grounded, down-to-earth boy who gives absolutely everything for the football club and he will continue to grow. We will enjoy him while we can.' Robbo added: 'This is where we are as a football club — we put people on platforms. Killian didn't have loads of offers when he came to us but has grown as a boy and grown as a player. 'He will be the first to say the football club and coaching staff have been fantastic for him. He has snatched his chance and is an international footballer now. 'He will get attention but we don't need to sell. We haven't had any contact at the moment. When Killian leaves, it will be for good money and he will deserve his move. His trajectory is going to where we want it to go.' Saints didn't have it all their own way yesterday once Kevin Holt pulled a goal back for Ayr but it was a case of job done for Robbo. 'We felt Roland [Idowu] caused them problems and the game should have been dead and buried,' he added. 'But Ayr are a good side with a very good manager and we expected a response. 'We lost a goal from a set-play but we had numerous chances to finish the game off. If you don't do that, it makes it a little bit nervy. But we stood strong and managed the game okay. There were some very good performances.' Saints will face Hearts in the last 16 and Robbo said: 'To get through is good and to get a home draw is good. We will take the positives out of that. 'It could have been an easier draw than Hearts, of course, but I got to a cup final last time when we had to beat Hearts, Rangers and Aberdeen to get there so there's no reason why we can't do the same. 'We haven't done it so far [go deep in a domestic cup competition] but it certainly is our goal. We're potentially not going to win the league this season but there's always a chance in the cup. If you want to progress, you have to beat the better teams – and Hearts are one of the better teams.'

Stephen Robinson says St Mirren season starts 'for real' as he lauds Ayr boss Scott Brown

The Buddies will go head-to-head with Ayr United in a bid to guarantee a place in the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup. Stephen Robinson believes St Mirren's season starts for real tomorrow as they bid to qualify for the next phase of the Premier Sports Cup. ‌ The Buddies know anything less than a win will see Ayr United clinch Group D and leave them sweating on advancing as a best runner-up. ‌ The SMiSA Stadium showdown is live on the cup sponsor's channel as Scott Brown's Honest Men arrive intent on sealing the deal. ‌ And Saints gaffer Robinson feels this is the ideal situation to build up for the start of another Premiership campaign. He explained: 'The other games [in the competition] are tough in different ways. There are tough surfaces and the stage of the season we're at it is tough. But we're at home. The pitch is in great condition and it's live on TV. 'Scott will bring a team that's started the season really well. They've got a lot of boys with great experience, including guys we know like Curtis Main. ‌ 'That will hopefully set us up for the league season. Now it feels real. This is a real competitive game and it's now about us stepping up now and doing what we have done better.' Robbo knows it isn't going to be easy with Ayr playing attractive, attacking football – and he has been impressed with how former Celtic captain Brown has gone about his business since swapping the pitch for the dugout. 'Scott's had an excellent grounding,' the Northern Irishman said. 'He was a brilliant player that I admired from afar very much and when we played against him. ‌ 'He'll have learned a lot from the managers he's worked under and now he's putting his own stamp on it. He's done very well and was unlucky not to get promoted last season. 'I'm sure that, with the backing they have, they see themselves as a Premiership side and I'm sure Scott is the man to take them there.' Saints have had a mixed Premier Sports Cup campaign so far. Having drawn with Arbroath at Gayfield in the opener (losing out on the bonus point on penalties), they held on for a narrow win over Forfar Athletic at Station Park. ‌ However, the team seemed to click last Saturday when Annan Athletic were trounced 8-2 with Mikael Mandron grabbing a hat-trick. Robbo says that, despite the slow start, his Buddies are still on a fine run dating back to last term. He said: 'It's taken its time. We're only just getting signings in that we've been after all summer. 'Those boys haven't played any football and the squad isn't complete as yet. That has shown in a couple of the early games. But if you look at our overall form, we haven't lost in 13 or 14 games going back to last season. 'You can debate Arbroath but we got a point in that one. We've got a set way of playing and we play some very good football.'

Stephen Robinson signings update as St Mirren eye "couple of bodies"

The Buddies look set to be active in the transfer market over the coming weeks. Stephen Robinson says he is still looking to bolster his St Mirren squad ahead of the Premiership big kick-off. ‌ The Buddies look set to be active in the coming weeks after some high-profile departures this summer. ‌ Jamaican winger Jalmaro Calvin is a target and he was among the spectators during Tuesday night's 2-1 Premier Sports Cup win over Forfar Athletic at Station Park. ‌ Saints have made six signings so far with keeper Ryan Mullen, wing-back Jayden Richardson, Jamaican international central defender Richard King and midfielder Liam Donnelly all new additions while Killian Phillips and Roland Idowu agreed permanent deals following loan spells from Crystal Palace and Shrewsbury Town, respectively. But keeper Zach Hemming, who was on loan from Middlesbrough, has joined Sky Bet League Two side Chesterfield. Richard Taylor and Caolan Boyd-Munce are in League One with Bolton Wanderers and Wycombe Wanderers, respectively, with Ryan Alebiosu (who was a loanee from Belgian side KV Kortrijk) signing for Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers. 'I've no idea at this stage,' Northern Irish gaffer Robbo replied when asked how many players he expected to add before the closure of the summer transfer window. ‌ 'As every club does, we need a couple of bodies in at least to freshen things up and to make sure things don't become stale. 'And we need to make sure there is competition for places and people don't think they're definitely going to play.' On the victory at Forfar, which put the Buddies top of their group, Robbo added: 'We won but there is a lot of work to do. Credit to Forfar who made a really good game of it. 'We're still searching for the team and to get people into the club. These games, everyone expects you to turn up and win convincingly. It never happens, ever. "There are sticky pitches, Arbroath was the same, mean you can't move the ball as quick as you want to and teams are organised now at every level. We've done what we came to do."

Liam Donnelly 'not surprised' by St Mirren success under Stephen Robinson

The Northern Irishman signed a two-year deal with the Saints last week and is looking to continue the club's success by rediscovering his Motherwell form. By Kyle Gunn St Mirren's new boy Liam Donnelly admits he is not the least bit surprised by the job Stephen Robinson has done in Paisley – because of his past relationship with the former Motherwell boss. ‌ The Northern Irish midfielder played under Robbo during their Well days after he joined the North Lanarkshire outfit in 2018 from Hartlepool United. ‌ And the pair were reunited in Renfrewshire last week when he signed a two-year deal at the Buddies after leaving Kilmarnock for free. In the past three years, Robinson has led the Buddies to three consecutive top-six finishes and gave them a taste of European football for the first time in 37 years last season. While it doesn't shock the 29-year-old enforcer, he's hoping to squeeze his way into the starting lineup and enjoy even more success under the Buddies boss. 'What he's done for the club here hasn't been a surprise at all. I've seen it from the outside, the success of the last couple of years,' he told the Paisley Daily Express. 'Obviously, I was part of some of the success at Motherwell too, so [it was an] easy decision to come and I'm looking forward to working under him again. 'He was a big influence when I first went to Motherwell earlier in my career and my success at that time. ‌ 'So he's always someone I've kept in contact with. I was obviously keen to work with him again sometime, so I am delighted to be able to. 'I think he can push and get a bit extra out of me.' Donnelly is grateful to be on the inside looking out rather than the outside looking in at the Paisley club after experiencing first-hand how difficult Robbo's teams are to play against. ‌ He said: 'Not very nice! It certainly was never the easiest of games coming up against his team over the last couple of years. 'If you're not 100 per cent on it against a Stephen Robinson St Mirren team then it's not going to be an easy day at the office. 'We found it out that day [when St Mirren beat Kilmarock 5-1 last season]. I'm just here to hopefully add to that and hopefully continue the success St Mirren have had.' ‌ And Donnelly's hoping to return to the form he displayed at Fir Park during a four-year spell between 2018 and 2022, which he has called the best football of his career. He went on to say: 'I think that [Motherwell spell] was the best spell of my career, certainly in goalscoring. 'Hopefully, I get back to a bit of that! I had a good time at Kilmarnock as well under Derek McInnes. 'But I'm looking forward to working under Robbo again, and hopefully, he can bring out the best in me.'
