Nearly 10 Spartans named to East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 preseason watch list
Michigan State football was well represented on this year's preseason East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 list. The annual preseason watch list for the East-West Shrine Bowl was released on Monday, with nearly 10 Spartans being included on the list. The East-West Shrine Bowl is a collegiate all-star game after the season for eligible players that can be drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie mini-camp. From Michigan State, here were the eight players that cracked the preseason watch list: This year's East-West Shrine Bowl will be played on January 27 in Frisco, Texas. Odds are, Michigan State will have at least one attendee in this year's event. Michigan State football opens the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FS1. Spartans slated for local bowl game in latest projections from College Football News
Will Michigan State football reach bowl eligibility for the first time in three seasons? The latest projections from College Football News believes so. College Football News released updated preseason bowl projections earlier this week, with the Spartans making the cut. Michigan State is slated to play in the GameAbove Sports Bowl against Toledo in College Football News' latest projections. This bowl game will be played at Ford Field in Detroit on December 26. Michigan State last played in a bowl game in 2021. The Spartans the only team in the Big Ten that hasn't gone to at least one bowl game in the last three seasons. Michigan State is projected to finish right around the bowl eligibility cut line, with a win over/under total of 5.5 for many betting services. This would suggest the experts are anticipating Michigan State will be right around last year's record of 5-7, but hopefully with at least one more win this year to go bowling. The Spartans open up the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on FS1. MSU to travel more than 35,000 miles this season, ranks in lower half of Big Ten teams
How many miles will Michigan State football travel this year? It's in the lower half of the Big Ten -- which is a good thing for the Spartans. With the addition of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten last year, one of the notable talking points has been the amount of travel for teams. The lower amount of travel, the better off your team is -- or at least that is the theory by some who cover the game. So with that being said, how many miles will Michigan State travel this year and how does it compare to the rest of the league? Thanks to The Big Ten Huddle podcast, we know Michigan State will travel 37,777 miles -- which ranks as the No. 8 lowest among Big Ten teams. The Spartans longest trip this upcoming season will be a road trip to USC in late September, and their second longest trip will be to Nebraska in early October. Luckily for the Spartans, they'll get a bye week between these two tough road trips. Check out the complete ranking of most to least amount of miles traveled in the Big Ten below: Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan State news, notes and opinion. The Athletic ranks Michigan State football as a top 25 program in monetary value
Where does Michigan State rank among the most valuable college football programs in the country? The Athletic has an answer for that. If it was possible to buy the Michigan State football program, how much do you think it would cost? Apparently the number is close to $708 million, per a recent article from The Athletic. The Athletic published a story this past week that looked to answer this hypothetical question of program worth with a methodology that was "part art, part science." The full breakdown of how the worth was determined can be found here. So we know how much Michigan State football is worth -- but how does it compare to the other programs across the country? Well, it's in the top 25 nationally, coming in at No. 21 in the country. Among Big Ten teams, the Spartans were No. 10. This was a really interesting spin on the upcoming season and how these big-time programs compare to professional teams that are actually owned by someone. One day, we may be saying the same thing about college football programs too, but for now, this was a fun way to see how the Spartans compared in monetary value on the national scale. Competing preseason media poll has Spartans landing in same spot as Cleveland.com poll
It's the time of the year where everyone is releasing their preseason polls, and that includes a popular podcast centered around college football in the north. Kings of the North podcast created a competing Big Ten preseason media poll that included 54 voters covering the Big Ten and national college football landscape, and to little surprise Michigan State landed in the bottom half. The Spartans came in at No. 13 out of 18 teams in their version of the preseason poll. Ironically, Michigan State landed in the exact same spot in the more well-known annual preseason poll also released on Monday. In both polls, Michigan State landed right behind Washington (No. 10), Minnesota (No. 11) and Wisconsin (No. 12). Both polls were also lower on Michigan State than our own in-house preseason poll we released late last week that had Michigan State as the No. 8 team in the Big Ten. The landing spot of No. 13 -- or essentially the bottom of the middle-tier of teams -- aligns with the national perception and projection for Michigan State we've seen this offseason. This is the expected outcome for Michigan State should they land somewhere in the middle of their ceiling and floor.
