Glades Central teacher coerced student to send him nude photos, school investigation finds
Palm Beach County's school board has voted to fire a high school music teacher after an investigation by the school district found he coerced a student to send him sexually explicit photos via email, according to school district records. Robert Pace, 41, was a band teacher at Glades Central High before the school board voted to fire him on Nov. 19. He has appealed his firing and has retained attorney Tony Duran, who declined to comment on the investigation and on Pace's appeal. Trouble began for Pace in February 2024 when a Glades Central student's mother discovered her son had received messages on Instagram from Pace asking the student for photos of his penis, the school district's investigation found. Pace sent the student messages using an official Instagram page connected to the school, the records show. School district investigators spoke with the student, who said that after receiving several messages from Pace, he felt pressured to send the teacher the explicit photos to the email address the teacher provided. Investigators confirmed the student sent the photos. The student explained that Pace promised him that he would promote his standing in the band only if he sent the photos. The redacted records do not include what kind of promotion the student was promised, such as a solo performance or status as a section leader or captain. Through his lawyer, Pace disagreed with the outcome of the school district's investigation and denied ever sexually harassing the student. Pace said in the investigation he was "offering to counsel a clearly troubled young man," in Instagram messages and emails he sent to the student including videos about African music and music theory. More: All adults are required to report child abuse and neglect in Florida. Here's what to know Pace was escorted off Glades Central's campus on Feb. 6, 2024. School records show that the Department of Children and Families and the school police department were notified of the allegations, but as of Jan. 27, nearly a year later, Pace has not been charged with any crime. State Attorney's Office spokesperson Marc Freeman said prosecutors have not been made aware of Pace's potential actions by any police department. A spokesperson for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Pace was also not in the department's system. Typically, once a case is referred to DCF, that department investigates claims of child abuse and then directs a local law enforcement agency to contact the state attorney's office to bring charges, Freeman said. No such notification has occurred for Pace. Pace has worked at Glades Central High as a music teacher since 2021. The school district's Title IX office, which investigates gender-based harrassment and discrimination, found in its investigation that Pace regularly drove the student and other students home from school-related events that took place east of the Glades. The student told investigators that on one of those rides, Pace told him he could see the student's genitals through his pants, and that Pace would brag to the student about his sexual performance. "Almost every day he would make jokes about my penis," the student told investigators. "Whenever he would make those jokes, I would get quiet and feel uncomfortable and try to create space between us or walk off and do something else." The student said he often asked Pace to be dropped off before other students, but Pace wouldn't. The student said, "I was always last to be dropped off even when it made no sense at all." The student shared another incident in which Pace touched his genitals over his clothes while driving him home. The district's Title IX office investigated the claims as gender-based discrimination and harassment, but records show only that school police discussed the information with an unnamed police department and DCF. It's not clear from the investigation when each of the incidents took place, but the student's mother reported the explicit images within two weeks of the student sending them. Messages between the student and Pace show the teacher repeatedly messaging the student asking him to send the photos. Pace has appealed his firing by the school board. If his appeal continues, he and his attorney will have an opportunity to dispute the determinations made against him at an administrative hearing in front of a judge.
