Rookie Louis Foster Earns First Career Pole at Road America
INDYCAR First, it was Robert Shwartzman at Indianapolis. Now it's Louis Foster's turn. Foster became the second rookie to earn an NTT P1 Award this season, grabbing his first career NTT INDYCAR SERIES pole for the XPEL Grand Prix of Road America Presented by AMR with a stunning lap of 1 minute, 44.5141 seconds Saturday in the No. 45 Droplight/Desnuda Tequila Honda of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Foster's best previous start this season was third at the Sonsio Grand Prix in May on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. Shwartzman shocked the racing world in May by becoming the first rookie since 1983 to win the Indianapolis 500 pole. Foster's pole marked the first INDYCAR SERIES season with two rookie pole winners since 2019, when Felix Rosenqvist and Colton Herta achieved the feat. 'I said to the guys as we got into the Fast 12 to not put reds (Firestone Firehawk alternate tires) on because I wasn't confident we would make it through to the Fast Six,' Foster said. 'Boy, was I wrong. Absolutely awesome. The 45 crew has been amazing all weekend. 'Couldn't ask for a better start to the weekend. I still can't believe it. We went fast on old and new (tires). I'm going to celebrate well tonight.' The 55-lap race starts at 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday (FOX, FOX Deportes, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). A 25-minute warmup session will precede the race at 10 a.m. ET (FS1, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). Championship leader Alex Palou rebounded from two consecutive races off the top three finishers' podium by qualifying second at 1:44.6300 in the No. 10 SOLO Cup Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Kyle Kirkwood, who has won the last two races, qualified third at 1:44.8523 in the No. 27 Siemens Honda of Andretti Global. Scott McLaughlin will join him in Row 2 of the starting grid after qualifying fourth at 1:45.0137 in the No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet. Christian Lundgaard, quickest in pre-qualifying practice Saturday morning, will start fifth after his best lap of 1:45.0828 in the No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Graham Rahal qualified sixth at 1:45.4877 in the No. 15 Hendrickson International Honda as Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing was the only team to place two drivers into the Firestone Fast Six in the three-segment qualifying format. Pato O'Ward, second in points, qualified 11th at 1:45.3704 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. O'Ward trails Palou by 73 points, while Kirkwood is third, 75 back of the leader. The six drivers in the Firestone Fast Six final segment used an interesting mix of tire strategies to try and cope with air temperatures tickling the 90s and track temperatures in the triple digits on the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit. Foster got the pole job done on lightly used Firestone Firehawk alternate tires and was the only driver in the Firestone Fast Six to not use the harder, more durable primary tires during any of the three segments. Palou opted for scuffed alternates before using new alternates on his final laps. Rahal was the only one of the six drivers to use primary tires in the last segment as he did not run the harder, more durable tire in either of the first two segments. recommended

2025 Indy 500 pole sitter Robert Shwartzman has pitstop crash

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis 500 rookie pole-sitter Robert Shwartzman stood 29th after a disastrous pit stop Sunday on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval. Shwartzman slammed into some of his pit crew and the inside wall on a Lap 86 pit stop. One of his crew members is taken to the infield care center. Shwartzman requires a front wing change. Advertisement He blamed cold tires in an interview on the Fox broadcast. "As soon as I touched my breaks, my car just go," he said. Shwartzman had a slow first pitstop during a Lap 25 caution. Shwartzman led the first eight laps until Pato O'Ward passed him on a restart. The 25-year-old Israeli was the first rookie to start from the pole position since Tony Stewart in 1996. Stewart moved up one place on the starting grid after pole-winner Scott Brayton was killed in a post-qualifying crash. Shwartzman was the first rookie to earn the pole based on speed since Teo Fabi in 1983. The most recent Indy 500 rookie winner was Alexander Rossi in 2016. Ray Harroun (1911, the first Indy 500), Frank Lockhart (1926), Graham Hill (1966), Juan Pablo Montoya (2000) and Helio Castroneves (2001) also won as rookies. ‘Really scary': Indy 500 rookie crashes into pit crew member
IndyCar rookie Robert Shwartzman's Indianapolis 500 came to an unfortunate end on Sunday. Shwartzman started the race on the pole as he completed the quickest time around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in qualifying, but all the jubilation turned to pain as a debacle on pit road nearly seriously injured a handful of his crew members. He came into his pit stall after completing about 87 laps, and his car skidded as he got into the box. Four of his crew members tried to avoid the sliding car but failed. One crew member was taken away on a stretcher. Watch in the video player above. 'I honestly felt really strange brakes when I was coming slow in pit lane. I locked up both front tires, which usually isn't the case,' Shwartzman said. 'I wasn't sure if it was the brakes or because the tires were cold. I tried to be very slow. But as soon as I touched my brakes, my whole front was lost, and I went right into the guys. 'It was really scary because at the moment I braked I was just a passenger.' The crash was enough to end his day. The Prema Racing driver was the first rookie to take the pole position since 1983. 'It's just really sad because we did such good work in qualifying,' he said. 'But it's the Indy 500. Anything can happen. A lot of strong drivers are out of the race or behind. This is the Indy 500. This happens.' Alex Palou took home the checkered flag. It was his first win in the Indy 500 and the fifth in the first six races of the 2025 season.

Robert Shwartzman made quite an impression in his first Indianapolis 500, winning Rookie of the Year honors despite a rough finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 25-year-old Israeli became the first rookie to earn the pole position based on speed since 1983, when Teo Fabi did so. (Tony Stewart started first in 1996 after the original pole-winner, Scott Brayton, died in a practice crash.) Shwartzman earned $327,300 from a record purse of more than $20 million. Shwartzman led the first eight laps of the race and remained in the top 10 early. His day ended when his brakes apparently failed entering the pits on Lap 87, and he struck crew members and the inside pit wall. No one was seriously injured. 'I was just a passenger': Robert Shwartzman's Indy 500 fairly tale ends Shwartzman finished 26th, the lowest among the three race rookies. Louis Foster finished 12th, the last driver on the lead lap. Nolan Siegel was 13th after crashing on the final lap.
