OPP takes over Sudbury death investigation
Two off-duty Sudbury police officers have been suspended with pay in connection to the death of 19-year-old Rocco Renaud. Chief Sara Cunningham filed a complaint over their actions on May 23, when officers responded to an unresponsive man in Lively. Renaud later died in hospital. Ontario Provincial Police are now handling the investigation.

Police in Greater Sudbury and the Ontario Ministry of Labour have confirmed they are investigating the death of 19-year-old Rocco Renaud. The Ontario Provincial Police's criminal investigation branch has taken over the investigation into the death of 19-year-old Rocco Renaud, who was killed while working at a residence in Lively on May 23. Greater Sudbury Police asked the OPP to take over the case, after questions emerged about the conduct of two off-duty officers the day Renaud was killed. In a news release Monday, Sudbury police said a chief's complaint has been initiated about the conduct of the off-duty police officers. A chief's complaint is one initiated by Chief Sara Cunningham, police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn confirmed in an email to CTV News. Suspended with pay 'As the allegations have not yet been substantiated, their names will not be released at this time,' the release said. 'Both officers have been suspended with pay in accordance with section 209(1) of the Community Safety and Policing Act.' The OPP was asked to take over the case because 'it was determined that there is an institutional conflict of interest,' Sudbury police said, under Ontario Regulation 401/23 of the Act. 'The Greater Sudbury Police Service takes all allegations of misconduct and/or criminality by our officers seriously and remains committed to a thorough, transparent investigative process that upholds accountability and maintains the public trust we are sworn to protect,' the release said. Initial reports said Renaud was killed while doing maintenance work at the residence, and that the Ministry of Labour had opened an investigation. On Monday, the OPP said it received a request from the Sudbury police 'to assume responsibility for the investigation.' 'A post-mortem was conducted at the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, but a cause of death has not yet been determined,' the OPP said in a news release Monday. 'The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the OFPS.' Police responded around 8 p.m. to an address in the community. 'The individual was located unconscious and with no vital signs,' police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said in an email. 'He was transported to hospital by Paramedic Services, where he was unfortunately pronounced deceased.' While the time of death has not yet been confirmed, Dunn said police are investigating. 'Detectives from the Major Crime Section are working in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and the Coroner's Office,' she said. Fatal injuries The Ministry of Labour confirmed that Renaud died at a workplace at a residence in Lively. 'It was reported that a worker was fatally injured while performing maintenance work,' the ministry said in an email. 'The ministry extends its sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of the worker. Following the notification, ministry inspectors attended the scene to investigate. As the investigation is ongoing, no further details are available at this time.' His obituary said he was 'a bright light in the lives of all who knew him. 'A young man whose passion, kindness and adventurous spirit brought joy to everyone around him,' the obituary said. 'An avid sportsman, Rocco found his greatest happiness on the ice, the fairways, the slopes and in the great outdoors. His love for hockey was unmatched — whether he was skating across the rink with determination or cheering for his favourite team, his enthusiasm was contagious.' 'Rest easy, Rocco. You will forever be in our hearts.'
