Rochester man given probation, community service for shooting incident

Jun. 30—ROCHESTER — A former Rochester Charter Commission member received probation on drug and firearm charges in Olmsted County District Court Monday. Benjamin Allen Harris, 26, was given five years of probation after pleading guilty to one charge each of drug possession and possessing a firearm while ineligible. According to court records, Rochester police responded to a report of shots fired Dec. 24, 2024, at a home in the 6100 block of Shetland Drive Northwest. People living in the home told police they were sitting downstairs when they heard breaking glass. The people there showed police a bedroom window that had a bullet hole, a bullet hole in a window frame and a mirror in a bedroom that had been struck by a ricocheting bullet. People were sitting in the room at the time the bullet struck the mirror, the complaint shows. An off-duty officer in the area also reported hearing gunshots. Police went to White Pine Drive Northwest to a home with the garage door open. There Harris and his parents met with officers outside, according to the complaint. Harris' mother showed police video her son sent her of Harris exiting an upstairs bathroom while holding and racking a firearm. Harris also sent his mother multiple text messages suggesting he was suicidal. In the house, police found a black and gray semiautomatic pistol without a serial number and more than 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition along with substances that tested positive for cocaine, methamphetamine and amphetamines; miscellaneous pills, blades, bags and cash. Harris was ordered to serve probation concurrently on the charges with a stay of adjudication for the drug charge and a conviction of the firearm charge. Harris was also ordered to pay restitution of about $1,000 and given a fine of $500. Harris' attorney Peter Gifford noted that Harris is currently unemployed and completing substance abuse treatment. District Court Judge Pamela King then gave Harris the option to pay off with pro-social activities serving the community. King noted Harris' record with humanitarian group Team Rubicon and other community-oriented activities. "I think you have plenty you can give back to the community," King told Harris. King noted Harris had taken quick responsibility as a teen when he was adjudicated for second-degree arson in 2014. "You took responsibility right away for something that was very serious," King said.

Man in custody after overnight standoff with Rochester Police

Jun. 29—ROCHESTER — A man is in custody after a standoff with police overnight in southwest Rochester. According to a press release from the Rochester Police Department, officers were dispatched around 10:45 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 3800 block of Willow Ridge Drive SW for a domestic dispute where a man was reportedly armed with a knife. Before officers arrived, the man left the scene in a vehicle. Around 12:15 a.m. on June 29, officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop in southwest Rochester. The man continued driving to a residence in the 2700 block of First Avenue SW, the release said. When officers arrived at the residence, police say the man "emerged from the vehicle armed with a rifle and was uncooperative." "An officer discharged their service weapon in response," the release said. The man then fled into the residence. The Crisis Negotiation Unit and SWAT Team worked together to de-escalate the situation. The man surrendered "peacefully" around 4:45 a.m., and was taken into custody without further incident, RPD said. The Rochester Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating. No additional information is available at this time.

Monroe County OKs $200K for gates at Ontario Beach Park

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Rochester Police and Monroe County are taking immediate steps to prevent the disturbances becoming more frequent at Ontario Beach Park. During Tuesday's County Legislature meeting, officials agreed to speed up a $200,000 dollar plan to install gates at the Ontario Beach Park. But, before the unanimous vote — they spent about 30 minutes asking questions about how the gates will work, where they'll be placed, and whether or not this change will be effective in reducing criminal activity. 'It's like senior skip day': RPD, MCSO work together to introduce new safety measures at Charlotte Beach Park Here's an excerpt from Tuesday's meeting: 'How do the admins plan to evaluate whether this infrastructure only solutions are effective in reducing violence or simply creating the appearance of action?' 'I think one of the keys is we've engaged stakeholders which included committees in the Charlotte area so that we can continually meet with them.' 'I'm wondering if you've engaged stakeholders like Pathways to Peace to have a presence at that park?' 'We have not. We are relying on the partnerships with law enforcement to bring those additional resources in.' 'Is there a set timeline for the implementation of these gates?' The response to that last question about when those four gates will be installed. The answer: 'as soon as possible.' Law enforcement, businesses react to recent fights in Charlotte including new action Several questions focused on the Rochester Transit System. RPD Captain Greg Bello has said they have the authority to turn buses around if they have large groups of teens catching the bus to create problems, and the Crime Analysis Center will be monitoring social media to flag planned fights or chaos at the park.
