Rodney Harrison Was A Big Hit In San Diego For The Chargers

"Why aren't I playing more?'' Harrison inquired years ago. The scribes weren't sure and they didn't have to ponder the question long. Harrison, a fifth-round pick in 1994 soon shed his status as a special-teams player to become an All-Pro safety in a career which has landed him into the Chargers Hall of Fame. Harrison, who'll be inducted at halftime of Los Angeles' game against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 23. The upbeat Harrison had a sensational run of delivering hard-nosed, in-your-face, football that made him one of the most feared defenders of his generation. His style came with a price as he was fined more than $200,000 for questionable hits, a dose of regular discipline that often came with suspensions. Harrison, though, shrugged while noting that he was doing his part to prove the worth of safeties. Harrison, a long-time member of NBC's 'Sunday Night Football' telecast, has a resume that screams Pro Football Hall of Fame. Over his 15 seasons, with the first nine coming in San Diego and the final six with the New England Patriots where he won two Super Bowls, Harrison was named All-Pro and Pro Bowler twice and became the first player to record 30 interceptions and 30 sacks in a career. ''He was a hard-hitting, relentless safety – fearless in every sense of the word.'' Nicknamed 'The Hitman' Harrison always played to the echo of the whistle and then some. He performed with an edge and flair that guaranteed opponents were always aware where No. 47 was on the field. That's why ex-Patriots coach Bill Belichick consistently champions his entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Harrison is already a member of the Patriots Hall of Fame. 'I think Rodney Harrison 100 percent (belongs) in that conservation,'' Belichick said of Harrison's bid to enter the game's hallowed gates in Canton, Ohio. 'And I've coached some of the other safeties in the Hall of Fame, and not taking anything away from them, but certainly Rodney Harrison belongs in that conversation.' Commanders land surprising cornerback in new NBC mock draft NBC broadcasts NFL Sunday Night Football during the NFL regular season. A couple of days ago, the Sunday Night crew of Tony Dungy, Rodney Harrison, and Jac Collinsworth took turns alternating selections in their own first-round 2025 mock draft. It was Collinsworth's turn at No. 29 when they were to make the Washington Commanders selection. Here is how they used the pick and then offered commentary: No. 29 Washington Commanders CB Benjamin Morrison, Notre Dame JC: "Had he been healthy this year, I think he would have been a top-ten pick. He had a hip injury and missed their run to the playoffs and national championship game. Big physical guy, NFL bloodlines..." TD: "This is where these guys go in the draft. They are guys that have high first-round talent, but something happened, injuries, style of defense, etc." RH: "I was a little surprised you didn't go safety Xavier Watts, Notre Dame, because Jeremy Chinn left and they still need help at the safety position. The guy has tremendous instincts; he tackles well. He is just a playmaker, reads things before they happen." Super Bowl XXXIX: Inside the numbers of Jacksonville's Super Sunday, 20 years ago The scoreboard at Alltel Stadium read 24-21, but on the night that lifted Jacksonville into the club of Super Bowl host cities, the final score was only the beginning. Thursday marks 20 years to the day since Super Bowl XXXIX arrived in Jacksonville, bringing the New England Patriots, the Philadelphia Eagles and the eyes of much of the planet to the First Coast on Feb. 6, 2015. Here are some of the numbers to remember from Jacksonville's week in the Super Bowl spotlight. 0: Amount of food remaining at some Super Bowl XXXIX vendors by the second half. Oops. 1: Number of Super Bowls held in Jacksonville. 2: Interceptions by New England Patriots safety Rodney Harrison in Super Bowl XXXIX, one shy of the game's record. 3: Number of special park-and-ride lots opened ahead of Super Bowl festivities from Thursday through Sunday.
