Rory McIlroy unbelievably unearths hidden golf ball with shot in bizarre scene at The Open

Rory McIlroy had a sensational third round that saw him surge up the leaderboard at The Open on Saturday at Royal Portrush, yet the shot he may remember most is when he hit two balls with one swing. McIlroy, 36, hit an errant drive on the 11th hole and the ball landed where the fans stand. McIlroy's ball had a decent lie, as the ground had been trampled on throughout the last few days. However, what McIlroy didn't know, was that directly underneath his ball, was another golf ball submerged in the ground that could not be seen, as it was buried below the surface. As McIlroy swung, his ball went 117 yards into the fairway, and when he made contact with the ground, the other ball popped up a few feet in the air and landed between his feet. McIlroy almost immediately looked down and picked in the ball in disbelief. "Oh my God," McIlroy said as he picked up the ball he unearthed with his swing. McIlroy eventually threw the ball into a bush and asked NBC's on-course analyst Roger Maltbie, "Have you ever seen that before?" "That is the most weird, ridiculous thing I have ever seen," McIlroy said after the round. McIlroy ended with a bogey, and a discovered ball on the 11th hole. The bogey on the 11th hole was his only blemish on the day. The Grand Slam winner came out hot as he birdied three of his first four holes. After his bogey on the 11th hole, he responded by draining a 56-foot eagle putt on the 12th hole to get the stroke back. McIlroy notched another birdie on the 15th hole, and finished 5-under par for the day, and is 8-under for the tournament. At the time of this writing, McIlroy is in a tie for fourth place and five strokes behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler. Padraig Harrington get into fiery run-in with Roger Maltbie in wild scene

Padraig Harrington got into it with NBC analyst and longtime PGA golfer Roger Maltbie on Friday. The incident, which happened midway through the U.S. Senior Open, was seemingly over Harrington taking offense from Maltbie not helping his group look for a lost golf ball. 'Never on a golf course stand and look at somebody looking for a golf ball,' Harrington said in the video. 'That's a hard position to take there,' Maltbie responded. The two then stepped closer to each other and continued to argue, and Harrington was heard telling Maltbie, 'You've played golf all your life. You understand.' At one point during the argument, Maltbie says, 'I'm not a player,' to Harrington. Maltbie, 73, played on the PGA Tour for over 20 years, winning five tournaments before making the switch to broadcasting in 1991. Harrington's caddie, Ronan Flood, tried to step in to quell the altercation, but was ultimately unsuccessful. After some more banter, Harrington eventually walked away from Maltbie, ending the interaction. Going into Saturday, Harrington, 53, is tied for the lead alongside partner Stewart Cink with the two and Australian golfer Mark Hensby at 6-under. 'If anything, he'd be a little bit longer than me,' Harrington said of Cink on Friday. 'But I suppose I know his game enough that I can see what's happening, as well. He is definitely a partner I would choose to play with.' Cink, who is playing in his first U.S. Senior Open, hit all 18 greens in regulation on Friday, a stat that he has called overrated. 'You don't want to be chipping downhill on this course, it's not a secret,' said the 52-year-old Cink.

Golf legends Padraig Harrington and Roger Maltbie involved in spat at US Senior Open

Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington was involved in a viral bust-up with former pro-turned NBC reporter Roger Maltbie at the US Senior Open. A video, which flooded social media, showed Harrington arguing with on-course reporter Maltbie for not helping him look for a lost ball during his opening round at Broadmoor Golf Club. The beef began on the 15th hole of Thursday's opening round, when Harrington sent a wayward tee shot into a thicket of trees. Around a dozen people tried and failed to find the ball, forcing Harrington back to the tee box for his third shot. All the while, Maltbie - who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s and 1980s - opted not to join in the hunt. The following day, Harrington called out the American for 'poor etiquette', telling him: 'Never on a golf course stand and look at somebody looking for a golf ball.' Video from the US Senior Open shows Irish pro Padraig Harrington going at it with NBC on-course analyst Roger Maltbie. Sounds like Harrington, who's tied for first, wasn't happy with where Maltbie stood. But Maltbie wasn't having it either. Maltbie is a pro golfer himself — Brett Forrest (@brettforrestTV) June 27, 2025 The Irishman continued: 'You've played golf all your life. You understand.' But longtime reporter Maltbie defended his decision, claiming his focus has to be on his job rather than helping Harrington. 'So I should have disobeyed my producer?,' he asked the Irishman. Maltbie told that he was asked to be prepared to report on Harrington's plight. 'I can't do it from inside the thick of the trees,' the reporter told 'So I stayed outside, and then [Harrington] walked near me and he said: "You could help search for the ball," and I just didn't respond.' He continued: 'I was very close to saying: "All these years, all these checks I've gotten from NBC, your name isn't on any of them."'

'Never on a golf course stand and look at somebody looking for a golf ball,' Harrington is seen telling Maltbie on video captured by a local TV reporter outside the scoring area. 'You've played golf all your life. You understand.' The argument stemmed from Thursday's round when Harrington teed off into a thicket of trees on the 15th hole. After about a dozen people unsuccessfully searched for the allowed three minutes, Harrington went back to the tee box for his third shot. He ended up saving bogey and went into the weekend tied for the lead. Maltbie, the longtime on-course reporter who played on the PGA Tour in the 1970s and '80s, was in the area.
