"There Was Threat, We Weren't Allowed To...": Rohit Sharma On T20 World Cup 2024 Match vs Pakistan

Retired from two of the three formats, Rohit Sharma has now got the time to sit back, relax, and look back at some of his recent achievements in international cricket. Though the ODI World Cup dream still remains unfulfilled for Rohit, he did manage to lead the national team to the T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 titles recently. These events also included some gruelling contests against Pakistan, India's arch-rivals. During an interview on JioHotstar, Rohit shared some intriguing details from India's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, especially as the team was preparing for the match against Pakistan. "Before the India vs Pakistan match, we were told there was a threat - something was going on. So, two days before the game, we weren't allowed to step out of the hotel. The atmosphere started building from there," Rohit said on JioHotstar. Though Indian captains often dub matches against Pakistan as 'just another contest', Rohit admitted that the statement isn't really true. "We were ordering food in, and the hotel was so packed you could barely walk. Fans, media - everyone was there. That's when you realise this isn't just another match - something special is about to happen. As soon as we got near the stadium, it already felt like a celebration - Indian fans, Pakistani fans, all dancing and enjoying themselves," he added. "I've played so many India-Pakistan games now - I've lost count - but that pre-match energy, that feeling... It's always something else. Nothing compares to it," he further said. In the T20 World Cup 2024 clash against Pakistan, it was Rishabh Pant who scored 42 off 31 balls in an innings that saw the Indian team being dismissed for 119 in 19 overs. "We just wanted Rishabh to be Rishabh - do all the things he does best, unsettle the bowlers, play freely. And he did that perfectly. His innings was around 42, and on that pitch, that's as good as scoring 70." In the match, Jasprit Bumrah turned out to be the team's saviour again, with three wickets to his name, helping the team secure a 6-run win. "With Bumrah, you've got to be proactive in how you use him. He's a wicket-taker, and at the same time, he's not going to leak runs. So, how do you balance that, especially when the opposition is chasing at a run-a-ball? Arshdeep has been phenomenal too," said Rohit Sharma. "Over the last two years, there's a reason he's become India's highest wicket-taker in T20Is - he's a really smart bowler. So, with both of them, my focus was on how to use their remaining overs strategically," he added.

"They Ruined November 19...": Rohit Sharma On Team India's Mindset While Playing Australia

November 19 is a date that most fans of Indian cricket do not remember fondly. After an invincible World Cup campaign, India suffered heartbreak in the final, losing to Australia on November 19, 2023. However, some months later, India exacted somewhat of a revenge when they defeated Australia in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit Sharma, India's ODI captain, reflected on the feeling he had after the defeat in the World Cup final, and what it meant to beat Australia en route to the T20 World Cup title. Rohit pioneered India's victory over Australia in the T20 World Cup. Batting first, Rohit smashed 92 runs off just 41 balls, taking India to a daunting total of 205 in 20 overs. Australia ultimately felt 24 runs short, receiving a major blow to their semi-final hopes. Rohit looked back on his knock: "The anger was always there. It was in the back of my mind," said Rohit, in an interview with Star Sports. " Inhone hamaara 19 November kharaab kar diya, humaara nahi poore desh ka (They ruined November 19 for us. Not only for us, but also for the entire country). We should reserve something for them. We should also give them a nice gift. You have such thoughts in your mind," Rohit added. Rohit smashed Australian pacer Mitchell Starc for 29 runs in the third over of the innings. Starc was taken to the cleaners, being slammed for four sixes and a boundary in that one over. Rohit clarified that the idea of avenging their World Cup final defeat only happened before the match, and not while actually playing. "But when you're batting, you're not thinking, 'I want to knock them out of the tournament'. Yes, in the dressing room we keep talking about these things. There's that kind of fun that, yes, inko bahar karte hai, maza aayega (let's knock them out, it'll be fun)," Rohit said.

Rohit Sharma takes a break, spotted vacationing in Milan with wife Ritika Sajdeh

Rohit Sharma and wife Ritika Sajdeh (Image credit: Instagram) NEW DELHI: Former India Test captain and current ODI skipper Rohit Sharma , who recently retired from red-ball cricket at the age of 38, was seen vacationing in Milan even as Team India battles England in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy five-Test series. His successor, Shubman Gill , came under fire following India's five-wicket defeat in the series opener at Headingley — his first match as Test captain. Rohit, now focused solely on One-Day Internationals, shared glimpses of his holiday in Italy on social media, including a photo of the iconic Duomo di Milano cathedral. His next cricketing assignment is scheduled for August, when India tours Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series starting on August 17. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Meanwhile, India endured a frustrating loss at Headingley, where England chased down a steep target of 371 runs in the fourth innings — their second-highest successful chase in Tests and the highest ever against India. Former England captain Nasser Hussain, speaking on Sky Sports, was critical of Gill's captaincy debut. "I saw someone finding his way. He didn't quite have that on-field aura of Rohit and Kohli. I thought he followed the ball a lot and was reactive rather than proactive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? England's victory was anchored by Ben Duckett's explosive 149, aided by Joe Root's unbeaten 53 and debutant Jamie Smith's steady 44 not out. Despite India boasting five individual centuries across both innings — with Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant all reaching triple figures — the team failed to convert that dominance into a win. Gambhir & Agarkar Plot at the Birmingham Nets | Key Talks Ahead of 2nd Test vs England While highlighting Gill's leadership struggles, Hussain also noted that the young captain wasn't solely to blame for the loss. "India lost the match because of two things Gill couldn't control — dropped catches and batting collapses," he said, referencing India's sloppy fielding and key middle-order failures. India had England at vulnerable positions — 276/5 in the first innings and 333/4 in the second — but failed to capitalise. Crucial batting collapses saw India lose 7 wickets for 41 runs in their first innings and 6 for 31 in the second, ultimately swinging the match in England's favour. Rohit Sharma Spotted Enjoying Vacation In Italy With Wife Ritika Sajdeh Amid India vs England Series

While India and England battle it out for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy across a fiercely-contested five-match Test series, former India Test captain and current ODI captain Rohit Sharma appears to be taking some time off. Rohit, who announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the series, was spotted by fans in the city of Milan. Rohit also took to his own social media to share snippets of his vacation, in particular sharing an image of the Duomo di Milano (Cathedral church of Milan). At the age of 38, Rohit is now playing only one format internationally - One-Day International Cricket. As a result, with India engaged in the Test series against India, Rohit does not have any cricket commitments for some time. The first ODI is scheduled to take place on August 17. Meanwhile, Rohit's successor as India's new Test captain, Shubman Gill, is under the spotlight after his leadership in the series opener against England. Gill came under criticism from former England skipper Nasser Hussain, who said Gill "didn't quite have the on-field aura" of his predecessors, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. "I saw someone finding his way," Hussain said on Sky Sports. "He (Gill) didn't quite have that on-field aura of Rohit and Kohli. I thought he followed the ball a lot and was reactive rather than proactive. When Rohit and Kohli captained, you looked down and immediately knew who was in charge. In this game, I saw two or three captains - captaincy by committee." Gill's first Test as skipper ended in disappointment as India slumped to a five-wicket defeat at Headingley despite a dominant start and five individual centuries across both innings. England, fueled by Ben Duckett 's electrifying 149 and composed efforts from Joe Root (53 not out) and debutant Jamie Smith (44 not out), chased down 371 in the fourth innings - their second-highest successful run chase in Test history, and the highest ever against India. While Hussain admitted that Gill's captaincy lacked assertiveness, he also acknowledged that the 24-year-old wasn't solely to blame. "India lost the match because of two things Gill couldn't control - dropped catches and batting collapses," he said, pointing to the team's fielding struggles and repeated middle-order meltdowns. In a game where India had England at 276/5 in the first innings and later at 333/4 in the second, their inability to close out dominant positions proved fatal. The visitors lost seven wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and six for 31 in the second - collapses that turned the tide despite hundreds from Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill himself in his first innings as captain.
