Field work for Kalimantan road link underway: DCM
Published on: Tuesday, July 08, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 08, 2025 By: Ricardo Unto Text Size: Shahelmey also confirmed that another proposed cross-border route linking Pekan Pagalungan and Pekan Sempadan Bantul in Pensiangan has been approved under the Rural Road Programme (JALB) funded by the Federal Government through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, and is currently in the procurement stage. Kota Kinabalu: Field work, including land surveying, utility mapping and land investigation, is currently being carried out for the construction of a road connecting Sabah and Kalimantan in Indonesia, said Deputy Chief Minister III cum Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. He said the project involves a specific alignment, namely the construction of a new road spanning 28km from Kalabakan, Sabah, to the Malaysia-Indonesia border at Simanggaris, with an additional 20km spur road to Kampung Serudong Laut. 'The Federal Government, through the Works Ministry, has approved the Preliminary Study and Design under Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3, RMK-12),' he said in response to an oral question from Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (GRS-Sindumin). Shahelmey also confirmed that another proposed cross-border route linking Pekan Pagalungan and Pekan Sempadan Bantul in Pensiangan has been approved under the Rural Road Programme (JALB) funded by the Federal Government through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, and is currently in the procurement stage. In a supplementary question, Yusof noted that the border between Sabah and Kalimantan is long and highlighted the need for additional road connections, especially considering Indonesia's capital relocation to Nusantara, which is expected to boost regional population and trade flows. He proposed the construction of a road linking Sipitang to Long Pasia and into North Kalimantan through the Heart of Borneo, citing the area's rich natural resources and proximity to the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (Sogip) port, which could be a strategic gateway for goods from Kalimantan. 'This route could offer a more economical option to transport resources from North Kalimantan to Sipitang, which is about 500km from Tarakan and 700km from Pontianak,' Yusof said, suggesting that the Government consider making the Heart of Borneo a new development corridor. In response, Shahelmey said the proposed Kalabakan-Simanggaris alignment was prioritised based on current connectivity needs, but acknowledged the strategic value of a route from Sipitang to Long Pasia and beyond. He said such proposals could potentially be incorporated into the broader Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR) plan, which is currently active in Sarawak but has yet to begin in Sabah. 'We take note of the suggestion and will consider it in our planning for future road development in the State,' Shahelmey said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Shahelmey (left) speaking with Tandek assemblyman Datuk Hendrus Anding at the State Assembly. KOTA KINABALU (July 7): A road project connecting Sabah to neighbouring Kalimantan, Indonesia, has entered its initial phase, said State Works Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya. Shahelmey said one proposed alignment involves constructing a new 28-kilometre road from Kalabakan to the Malaysia-Indonesia border at Simanggaris. This includes a 20-kilometre spur road linking Kampung Serudong Laut to Jalan Sapulut-Kalabakan. He said the federal government, through the Public Works Ministry, has approved the project's preliminary study and design under Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3, RMK-12). 'The current status of this project is that field work such as land surveying, utility mapping, and land investigations are actively being carried out to provide data and information for completing the study and design aspects,' he told the State Assembly today. He was responding to Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, who had asked for updates on the proposed road alignments connecting Sabah to Kalimantan. Shahelmey also revealed another proposed road project to connect Pagalungan town to the Bantul border town in Pensiangan. 'This project has also been approved under RP3, RMK-12, as part of the Rural Road Programme (JALB). Funded by the federal government through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW), it is currently in the procurement process,' he said.

Another proposed alignment runs from Pekan Pagalungan in Sabah to Bantul Town in Kalimantan. This project, funded by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, is currently in the procurement phase. Responding to queries about additional road alignments from Sindumin and Long Pasia to the Indonesian border, Shahelmey noted that these proposals would be evaluated based on necessity. Sabah proposes two new road links to Kalimantan
KOTA KINABALU: Two new road links between Sabah and Kalimantan have been proposed to enhance connectivity between the state and Indonesia, in light of the upcoming relocation of Indonesia's capital to Nusantara. Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya said one new alignment to the Kalimantan border is currently under construction in Kalabakan, while another in Pensiangan is still in the procurement stage. He said the project to construct a new road from Kalabakan to the Malaysia–Malaysia-Indonesia border is underway, covering a 28-kilometre stretch. "This alignment includes the construction of a new road connecting the existing Sapulut–Kalabakan Road to the Malaysia–Indonesia border, covering 28km, and a spur road to Kampung Serudong Laut, spanning 20km. "The Federal Government, via the Works Ministry, has approved the preliminary study and design for this project under the Rolling Plan 3 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RP3 RMK-12). "At present, field works such as land surveying, utility mapping, and soil investigation are actively being carried out to gather data and information needed to complete the project study and design," he said during the Sabah State Legislative Assembly sitting today. He was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob (GRS – Sindumin) on the status of new road construction projects connecting Sabah with Kalimantan, Indonesia. Shahelmey, who is also the Sabah Works Minister, said another project is a proposed road leading to the Bantul border in Pensiangan. The project has already been approved under RP3 RMK-12, as part of the rural road programme funded by the Federal Government through the Rural and Regional Development Ministry. It is currently in the procurement stage. In response to a supplementary question by Yusof on other potential routes along the Sabah–Kalimantan border, particularly in Sipitang, Shahelmey said only the two proposed alignments are set to be implemented for now. He added that currently, there are no proposals for a road linking Long Pasia in Sipitang to North Kalimantan, due to the considerable distance of the border from the main road networks. "For the proposed route on the southwest coast, compared to the Kalabakan–Sapulut–Simanggaris Road, that alignment is meant for connectivity. But for Long Pasia, the border is quite far, it would be more feasible to connect Ba' Kelalan in Sarawak to Lun Bawang in North Kalimantan. "This could be included under the proposed Sabah–Sarawak Link Road, which is currently being implemented in Sarawak," he said.
