Ukrainian Drone Strike Hits Russian Defense Plant In Izhevsk, Killing 3

This article was originally published by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and is reprinted with permission. A Ukrainian drone strike hit a facility overnight in Russia's industrial city of Izhevsk, more than 1,000 kilometers east of Moscow, killing three people and seriously injuring 35, according to Udmurtia's regional governor. Aleksandr Brechalov said on July 1 that the attack targeted an industrial facility in the regional capital, but he did not specify which one. He confirmed that the wounded are receiving medical care in a city hospital and that psychologists are working with victims and their families. Ukrainian sources claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that the Kupol Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant was the target. The plant is a key player in Russia's defense industry, known for producing the Tor surface-to-air missile system and the Garpia-A1 combat drone, making it a high-value military-industrial asset in the region. Social media channels and Telegram posts shared video footage purportedly capturing the moment of the drone's impact and a subsequent explosion. In response to the incident, Rosaviatsiya, Russia's federal aviation agency, announced the temporary closure of Izhevsk airport, as well as airports in Saratov, Kazan, Ulyanovsk, and Nizhnekamsk. Izhevsk is a significant hub for Russia's defense industry. It is home to enterprises such as the Kalashnikov Group weapons manufacturer and has been a critical node in Russia's military supply chain. According to Russia's Defense Ministry, the attack in Izhevsk was part of a larger overnight Ukrainian drone offensive. The ministry claimed to have shot down 60 drones across several regions, including Ukraine's Russia-annexed Crimea as well as Rostov, Kursk, Saratov, Belgorod, Voronezh, Oryol, and territories around the Azov Sea and the Black Sea. The ministry said the drones had been intercepted and did not provide any damage evaluations. Residents in the Saratov region, located near Kazakhstan, reported hearing explosions during the night. Saratov Governor Roman Busargin acknowledged the drone threat in the area. The Saratov region is home to strategic infrastructure, including the Engels-2 air base, which hosts Russia's strategic bombers, the Tu-95MS and Tu-160. One of Russia's largest oil refineries, Taneco, is located in the nearby city of Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan. Also in Tatarstan, there is the Alabuga Special Economic Zone in the town of Yelabuga, where Shahed-type drones used by Russia in Ukraine are being assembled. These sites have been previously targeted in past drone assaults, indicating a persistent Ukrainian strategy aimed at degrading Russia's military-industrial capabilities deep inside its own territory.

Ukraine claims 'successful' night-time strikes on two Russian airfields

by Naharnet Newsdesk 6 hours Kyiv said on Friday that it had launched "successful" strikes on two military airfields inside Russia that Kyiv said were used to stage aerial attacks on Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian bombardments have escalated in recent weeks despite a flurry of diplomatic efforts spearheaded by the United States aimed at halting Moscow's more than three-year invasion. The announcement came just after Russia pummeled Ukraine with dozens of missiles and hundreds of drones in apparent retaliation for an audacious Ukrainian drone assault on several other airfields deep inside Russia last week. The Ukrainian military said it had attacked the Engels airfield in the Saratov region that lies hundreds of kilometers from Ukraine, calling the facility "a place of concentration of enemy aircraft." It also said it had struck the Dyagilevo airfield near Moscow where "refueling and escort" jets are based that aid Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine. Kyiv additionally claimed it had hit "at least three fuel and oil tanks" in Saratov, and vowed to continue attacks on military targets until Moscow's invasion is "completely stopped." Saratov governor Roman Busargin said drone strikes had damaged a residential building in the city of Engels, adding there were no civilian casualties. Unverified footage on social media showed a high-rise building on fire and a large blaze at what local media reported was an oil depot. Ukraine has struck targets inside Russia throughout the invasion and last week damaged nuclear-capable planes at air bases deep inside the country, including in Siberia.

Russia reports downing 174 Ukrainian drones as sides trade heavy fire

Russia reported heavy Ukrainian drone attacks on airfields and industrial areas on Friday, as Moscow launched deadly strikes on Kiev. The Russian Defence Ministry said 174 Ukrainian drones were downed over several areas, including the border regions of Kursk and Belgorod as well as the annexed Crimean peninsula. "In addition, three Neptune-MD guided missiles were destroyed by the air defence system over the Black Sea," it said. Despite the Russian military's reports of success in intercepting the Ukrainian attacks, several appear to have hit targets. A high-rise building was hit in the city of Engels in the Saratov region. There were no casualties and the building was briefly evacuated, but the residents have since returned, according to the governor of Saratov, Roman Busargin. "A drone attack caused a fire in one of Engels' industrial plants," he also wrote. According to media reports, the plant in question is a refinery. Engels is home to a large airbase of the Russian armed forces. The refinery is located in the immediate vicinity of the base, from which plans repeatedly take off to fire on Ukraine. A military airfield in the Bryansk region was also apparently hit, with videos showing a large fireball amid the sound of several explosions. Independent military blogger Jan Matveyev said there were indications that an ammunition depot was hit. According to acting governor Yevgeny Pervyshov, a factory in the Tambov region was hit. He said three people were injured but offered no further details about the company. Meanwhile, there was another attack on the Russian railway in Belgorod, where a reserve locomotive derailed following an explosion. According to the authorities, there were no injuries. However, the line was initially closed. Several attacks on Russian railway infrastructure have been reported in recent days. In one case, a passenger train also derailed as a result, with several people killed and injured. At least four people were killed after Russia launched an intense wave of drone and cruise missile strikes on Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian authorities said early on Friday.

Drone attack set fire to industrial site in Russia's Engels, governor says

MOSCOW: Drones attacked an industrial enterprise in Russia's southern city of Engels on Friday, causing a fire, the regional governor said. Video posted on social media and verified by Reuters showed a fire burning fiercely and emitting huge clouds of black smoke. Governor Roman Busargin did not specify what kind of industrial site was targeted. In January, a state of emergency was introduced in Engels after a Ukrainian drone strike hit an oil depot that serves a nearby base for Russian nuclear bomber planes, causing a fire that took days to put out. Busargin said a high-rise apartment block was also hit, but there were no casualties. Ukraine's general staff said it struck Russian airfields in Saratov and Ryazan regions, in addition to fuel reservoirs, during an overnight attack on Friday. Engels is part of the Saratov region. Ukraine has not targeted energy facilities in Russia since the middle of March, when a month-long pause in attacks on energy facilities was brokered by the United States. In one of the last such incidents, a March 14 drone strike caused a fire at Russia's Black Sea Tuapse oil refinery that was put out after three days.
