Manjummel Boys actor-producer Soubin Shahir denies arrest in financial fraud case, claims police understood his side: 'We went for arbitration...'

Malayalam actor and producer Soubin Shahir has clarified that he was not arrested in connection with the financial fraud case related to the blockbuster film Manjummel Boys. Speaking to the media after two days of questioning by the Maradu police, Soubin said reports of his arrest were incorrect. 'We have the documents in our hands and the figures that are still to come. The payments are still pending. All the documents prior to this have already been submitted,' Soubin said while talking to the reporters outside the police station, adding that he trusted both the police and the court. 'The figures they are quoting are wrong. All the correct figures have been submitted. We have already paid. They are the ones who filed the case. We went for arbitration — they were the ones who didn't show up,' he said. He also clarified that no further summons had been issued. 'They said they will inform us if needed,' he added. Father Babu Shahir and co-producer Shawn Antony also questioned Soubin was interrogated in connection with a complaint filed by Siraj Valiyathura, who alleged that the producers promised a 40 per cent profit share in return for his Rs 7 crore investment during the film's production. Siraj claimed he neither received the profit nor a refund. Maradu police also questioned Soubin's father and co-producer Babu Shahir, as well as producer Shawn Antony, in the case. Soubin Shahir's 'Romancham' gets an OTT release date While Soubin has denied being arrested, several reports stated that the actor and his co-producers were briefly arrested and released on bail due to anticipatory bail granted earlier by the High Court. The court had directed that the accused should not be questioned in custody and should be released immediately if arrested. The High Court had also refused to quash the case, and turned down the police's request for custodial interrogation. Kapkapiii Movie Review: This campy horror comedy has more chuckles than chills

Story: A group of out-of-work boys begin dabbling with an Ouija board just for kicks. At first, it's all fun and games — until strange events start to unfold. What begins as harmless mischief soon spirals into chaos, turning their lives upside down. 'Kapkapiii' is a Hindi remake of the 2023 Malayalam horror-comedy Romancham. Review: Horror comedies flow in a peculiar rhythm that's often hard to perfect. It's a fine balance that has to be maintained between making it too campy, somewhat goofy, and scary enough to make the audience feel just a tinge of fear. Kapkapiii checks these boxes mostly — but not without flaws. Manu (Shreyas Talpade) and his friends Achyut (Dinker Sharma), Nanku (Jay Thakkar), Nirup (Varun Pande) and others are a bunch of nincompoops sharing a room and doing all the aimless things out-of-work boys usually do. Things get mildly exciting when two young girls — Kavya (Siddhi Idnani) and Madhu (Sonia Rathee) — move in next door. But just when romance seems like a possibility, the story takes a sharp, spooky turn when Manu brings home an Ouija board. What begins as casual foolery soon snowballs into a series of eerie events that start to disrupt their lives. The tension gradually builds until it reaches a flashpoint — an unmistakable, unsettling presence in the house. As the plot progresses, more twists stumble out of the closet, adding layers of chaos to the group's already messed-up reality. Directed by the late Sangeeth Sivan best known for comedies like 'Kya Kool Hain Hum', 'Apna Sapna Money Money', and 'Yamla Pagla Deewana 2', leans heavily into the humour more than the horror. The comedy is crude, occasionally borderline offensive, but many of the jokes surprisingly land. The film thrives in its raw, unfiltered moments — thanks to the tapori lingo and the wild ways these boys speak to each other. There's a consistent stream of chuckles, aided by the fact that each character is quirkier than the next. Sivan and writers Saurabh Anand and Kumar Priyadarshi find fertile ground in their concept — throwing a motley bunch of lazy fellas into a haunted house scenario. It's not polished, but it's packed with energy. Unfortunately, the female characters here feel like mere props. Their presence is largely inconsequential, and their romantic tracks do little beyond stretching the runtime. Tusshar Kapoor's entry in the second half is a welcome change of pace. His character Kabir has a very bizarre yet funny trajectory. Tusshar's goofy expressions help but his character could have been fleshed out better. Shreyas Talpade is loud, as expected, but brings the right madness to Manu. Among the supporting cast, Dibyendu Bhattacharya is a total riot even in a short cameo. He has the rare ability to make an impression with minimal screen time. The screenplay, while rooted in a solid concept, feels cluttered with too many characters and too much chaos. While the humour works, the horror often fizzles. Still, the chemistry between the boys keeps things from falling apart. Music by Ajay Jayanthi blends well with the film's overall vibe, keeping it breezy and fun. Overall, 'Kapkapiii' is a harmless fun film that will tickle your funny bone but won't exactly send shivers down your spine.

Tusshar Kapoor says attempts were made to derail his career because of his film background: ‘Aap hero dikhne ke laayak nahi ho'

It's difficult for star kids to escape the ever-evolving debate around nepotism. While they enjoy certain privileges, they are also subjected to intense scrutiny, especially in today's hyper-critical environment. Actor and son of veteran star Jeetendra, Tusshar Kapoor, who made his acting debut in 2001 with Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai, recently reflected on how things were different back then — but not entirely free of judgment. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Tusshar acknowledged that the nepotism conversation wasn't as prevalent when he entered the industry. However, he admitted that there was a concerted effort by a section of the media to malign his image because of his film background. Recalling his early days, he said, 'Especially if you were from a film background, then the glass is always half empty for a certain section of the media. You have to be very thick-skinned. Bahut neecha giraane ki koshish, bahut negativity thi (There were efforts to pull you down, a lot of negativity).' The Golmaal actor went on to claim that attempts were made to derail his journey in the industry, but he chose to maintain a thick skin and focus on his work. Reflecting on the release of his debut film, he said, 'The film (Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai) released, and it did really well. Otherwise, I could have been crushed under this pressure. I didn't come into the industry feeling I had to live up to someone's expectations. But there was an attempt to constantly judge and derail my path.' Tusshar went on to express his gratitude to the audience for supporting him He also spoke about the pressure of public appearances that comes with being a star kid. According to Tusshar, even something as basic as showing up at a press event could spark criticism. He shared, 'If you come to a press conference naturally without makeup and hair, you are criticised that aap hero dikhne ke laayak nahi ho (you don't look like a hero). If you come with makeup and hair done, you are told you are too filmy. Everyone was trying to pull you down.' While Tusshar conceded that landing a debut film may be easier for star kids, he was quick to point out that success isn't guaranteed. 'You can get your first film much easier. But even that is a chance. To finish that film and what choices you make after that, it's all unknown. The constant scrutiny and that feeling of 'no matter what you do, the glass is half empty', that is something you have to face and move on from,' he shared. Tusshar's latest release Kapkapiii — a remake of the Malayalam film Romancham — hit theatres on Friday. The film also stars Shreyas Talpade and Siddhi Idnani.
