Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. stuns Yankees with incredible throw in Atlanta's win
ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. caught the New York Yankees off-guard with a spectacular throw to end the third inning in the Atlanta Braves' series-opening 7-3 victory Friday night. The All-Star right fielder threw out Jorbit Vivas at third base when Vivas was trying to tag up on a deep fly to the corner in right. 'His accuracy is stupid,' Braves manager Brian Snitker said. 'He's a weapon in right field. His arm is so strong and accurate, and the ball carries, release is good. He's special out there.' Acuña caught the ball just in front of the warning track with his back to the infield. He spun and fired a throw that reached third base in the air just in time Nacho Alvarez to tag a slowing Vivas, who ignored third-base coach Luis Rojas' signal to slide. 'I just always try to anticipate those plays,' Acuña said through an interpreter. 'That's really what I always try to focus on, anticipating the play before it happens. I really wasn't trying to do anything besides that. Thankfully, I have a good arm.' Alvarez was casual as the throw approached in an attempt to fool Vivas, who would likely have been safe if he had run hard all the way and slid. '(Vivas) got deked,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'That just can't happen. I did that all my career at third base. Just kind of play dumb, play dead. And that's what (Vivas) read. The body language of Alvarez there, just deked him. He knew it was a deep fly ball, so it caught up to him. ... It's a lesson that that can't happen on a baseball field, especially in that situation.'

Yankees' first game after All-Star break shows the severity of their trade deadline needs
ATLANTA — Ronald Acuña Jr. made one of the greatest throws anyone could make from the outfield, and yet it should not have been a highlight. The Atlanta Braves' right fielder caught a fly ball a step in front of the warning track, pivoted and fired a throw off his back foot that nailed Jorbit Vivas at third base. It's a throw that should unquestionably lead SportsCenter's Top 10 plays of the day; it's also a play that should lead the New York Yankees' lowlight reel in their 7-3 loss. Advertisement 'Can't happen,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, before repeating the same message. 'Just can't happen.' It's an inexcusable moment for Vivas, who's on the roster bubble as a backup third baseman. Players with no job security can't afford mistakes like this, even with Acuña making an otherworldly throw from right field. Vivas getting thrown out at third is even worse, considering the Yankees could have had runners on the corners for Aaron Judge, who led off the following inning with a single. Vivas said he felt like he was making good pace sprinting on the tag up from second base, but he then slowed down because Braves third baseman Nacho Alvarez Jr. made it appear as if there wasn't a possible tag out coming. Meanwhile, Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas was signaling to Vivas to slide, but he said he picked up Rojas' sign too late. 'It's my fault,' Vivas said through Yankees interpreter Marlon Abreu. 'It's on me there to make it to that base.' .@ronaldacunajr24 with a perfect throw! 🥶#BravesCountry — Atlanta Braves (@Braves) July 19, 2025 Boone twice benched Gleyber Torres last season for baserunning gaffes, but he said there was no consideration to pull Vivas from Friday night's game. 'I bench when guys don't run hard,' Boone said. Vivas being in the lineup in the first place is not his fault. But it is the Yankees' front office's fault for not having better alternatives going into the year. All offseason, it was mentioned how third base appeared to be a glaring hole, as Jazz Chisholm Jr. was expected to move to second base. Yet, the Yankees went into the season with DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera as the leading options. LeMahieu has since been released, and Cabrera suffered a season-ending leg injury. But neither should have been a consideration to start. Advertisement The Yankees have 12 days left until the trade deadline, and it's a must that general manager Brian Cashman brings in a capable third baseman. Peraza and Vivas have combined for -0.7 fWAR on the season. Peraza has a 28 wRC+ this year, the second worst in MLB among hitters with at least 150 plate appearances (Kansas City Royals infielder Michael Massey is worse at 25 wRC+). Vivas isn't much better at 59 wRC+. Going into October with either of them starting would be disastrous. A roster situation equally as dire: the club's pitching staff. The Yankees are so banged up that they threw a bullpen game in the first game out of the All-Star break. Rookie Cam Schlittler was originally supposed to start, but he was sent for an MRI to examine his upper arm earlier this week, Boone said. The tests came back clean, and the Yankees expect him to start against the Toronto Blue Jays either Tuesday or Wednesday. Yankees ace Max Fried was unavailable to start because of a blister on his index finger. Boone said it's realistic that Fried pitches against the Blue Jays. They wanted to give an extra day of rest to Will Warren, and they also did not want to interrupt Marcus Stroman's routine, as he was preparing to start Sunday. That left the Yankees no other option but to have a bullpen game with a bullpen that is short on quality relievers. Boone said they considered other options in the minors, but the organization felt this was their best chance at winning. The Yankees started Ian Hamilton, who promptly allowed three runs in the first inning. Hamilton has not been crisp for the Yankees since his first season with the club in 2023. He had fallen out of favor in the bullpen earlier this season and was bumped to lower-leverage outings before being reintroduced to higher-leverage spots recently. But he hasn't had much success. 'It was hittable,' Hamilton said of his stuff in Friday's outing. 'I wasn't getting the ball past people. I should have made some better pitches, and I didn't give my team the best start.' Advertisement The Yankees then brought in Rico Garcia, who was added to the active roster this week. Boone described Garcia as a 'guy with some talent that has a big arm.' He allowed a three-run home run to Ozzie Albies, who entered Friday's game with the third-worst slugging percentage in MLB this season. The Yankees DFA'd Garcia after the game and will promote Allan Winans to the roster, a source told The Athletic. No good internal reinforcements are coming soon for the bullpen. Mark Leiter Jr. is working his way back from a stress fracture. Fernando Cruz won't be an option until August at the earliest. Ryan Yarbrough has yet to throw off a mound. The bullpen is in shambles, and Cashman cannot afford to wait another 12 days to bring in quality relievers. The situation is bleak and needs reinforcing as soon as possible. Before the game, Boone was asked what he was most looking forward to now that the All-Star Game was complete. His answer: 'The opportunity to do something special as a team.' The Yankees are three games back of the Blue Jays, and if they don't address the obvious holes of this roster, it'll be hard to accomplish that objective.
