Engineering student ends life over prolonged harassment over debt repayment

A 20-year-old engineering student ended his life at his residence in Bahadurpally after reportedly facing prolonged harassment over debts incurred through betting apps. The deceased, identified as T. Ramakanth, a second-year B. Tech student at Malla Reddy University, was found dead in his room on Monday morning. His father, Thotapalli Thirupathi, a farmer, lodged a complaint with the police following the incident. According to the complainant, Ramakanth had been struggling with financial pressure for several months. He had informed his father on multiple occasions about debts he had incurred through a betting app. Nearly a month ago, Ramakanth told his father that he owed ₹34,000, which had been paid off to an individual named Gnaneshwar. However, Gnaneshwar allegedly continued to demand interest payment. The father further stated that around three months ago, Ramakanth had another debt of ₹10,000. Following this, individuals associated with the debt allegedly entered his room and seized his friend's laptop and mobile phone. On July 13, at around 2 p.m., Ramakanth again contacted his father asking for money. The next morning, around 8:00 a.m., he made another call, stating that he was being harassed for repayment. Later that day, he took the drastic step. Ramakanth was shifted to a private hospital in Bahadurpally, where he was declared dead. A case was booked, and an investigation is underway. Married man arrested for abetting suicide of teenager

A 28-year-old man from Nacharam was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman under the pretext of marriage and later abetting her suicide, police said. The accused, identified as Dasari Mahendar alias Mahesh alias Dangli, a labourer from Ambedkar Nagar in Uppal, allegedly concealed the fact that he was already married with three children before initiating a relationship with the young woman. He reportedly lured her with false promises of marriage. According to an officer from the Nacharam police, after gaining her trust, Mahendar forced himself on the victim and threatened her with dire consequences to prevent her from disclosing the assault. 'The woman later became pregnant, but instead of supporting her, Mahendar allegedly pressured her to end her life and leave him,' said the officer. On July 2, the woman died by suicide at her residence. Based on a complaint lodged by her family, a case was registered and Mahendar was taken into custody the next day. He has since been remanded to judicial custody. Officials further confirmed that Mahendar has a criminal history, including a previous narcotics-related case and another involving crimes against women. Investigations are ongoing.
