IPPTAR Committed To Enhance Media Professionalism In Age Of AI
KOTA KINABALU, July 31 (Bernama) – The Tun Abdul Razak Broadcasting and Information Institute (IPPTAR) is committed to enhancing the professionalism of the media community, especially journalists, through various courses including exposure to artificial intelligence (AI) technology in line with digital transformation and the evolving media landscape. Its director, Roslan Ariffin, said courses on AI are crucial because the ability of the media community to adapt to and leverage the latest technologies is key to remaining competitive and relevant in an increasingly challenging digital era. He said AI is no longer just a 'jargon' but an essential tool in making journalistic tasks faster and more efficient, from idea generation, draft writing, and audio transcription to data analysis. 'The knowledge gained throughout this course is hoped to be applied and subsequently improve the quality and reach of news delivered to the public. 'Continue to explore and adapt to new technologies because the media landscape will constantly evolve,' he said during the closing ceremony of the 'SMART Journalism Course: AI Tools for Faster, Smarter Reporting' organised by IPPTAR here today. A total of 25 media practitioners from various Sabah news agencies participated in the three-day course, which concluded today. Roslan said IPPTAR hopes the course will provide significant added value to the skills and knowledge of journalists in Sabah. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Roslan said IPPTAR plans to organise more regular courses and training sessions specifically for media practitioners in Sabah to further strengthen their skills in the field. This includes conducting courses in Kota Kinabalu or inviting Sabah-based media personnel to Kuala Lumpur to attend focused training sessions, not only on AI technology but also on other topics such as photography, graphics, and drone operation, he added.

Pahang Fisheries Dept condemns turtle abuse at Cherating beach
KUANTAN: The Pahang Fisheries Department has condemned the inhumane treatment of a green sea turtle by three people at the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre in Cherating on July 27. In the 6.45am incident, the adult turtle, believed to have been searching for a nesting site, was reportedly manhandled by the suspects. Pahang Fisheries Department director Roslan Abu Hasan expressed deep regret, saying the department viewed the incident seriously. "We are deeply saddened by the cruel actions of the three individuals. Our officers have conducted investigations at the site and lodged a police report at the Cherating station yesterday (July 28). "Turtles are protected under the Fisheries Act 1985. This incident highlights a disturbing lack of public awareness regarding the importance of preserving endangered marine species," he said in a statement today. Roslan said the department is working closely with the police to track down the suspects, who acted irresponsibly towards the marine animal. He said that under the Fisheries Act 1985, it is illegal to disturb, harass, capture, or destroy a turtle's habitat, and offenders may face a fine of up to RM20,000 upon conviction. Meanwhile, Roslan said monitoring has been intensified at popular turtle nesting sites, including Pulau Tioman, Kuala Rompin, Pantai Cherating, and Tanjung Batu Nenasi in Pekan, to prevent egg poaching. "We urge the public to report any suspicious activity along the beaches to help protect these turtles and ensure they can continue to nest safely during the season," he said. Yesterday, acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud had said that a 51-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the incident, which has since gone viral on social media.

THE protection of endangered species is a crucial responsibility. Recently, an incident involving three unidentified individuals disturbing a turtle at the Turtle Landing Beach, part of the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre in Cherating, Pahang, sparked outrage. Could it be true that this group was filmed harassing a turtle as it attempted to nest? Verdict: TRUE A 51-year-old Cherating man, had been arrested for allegedly disturbing a turtle attempting to nest at the Turtle Conservation and Information Centre on Saturday (July 26). The suspect was detained around 1pm on Monday (July 28) in the Cherating area, and police are searching for two more suspects believed to be involved in the incident. Acting Kuantan OCPD Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said that the suspect was believed to have disturbed the turtle to expedite the egg-laying process for illegal sale or use. A video of the incident has since gone viral online. The Pahang Fisheries Department expressed deep regret over the actions of these individuals, which occurred on Saturday at approximately 6.45am. Roslan Abu Hasan, the director of the department, condemned the actions as irresponsible. "We are deeply saddened by this inhumane act," Roslan told Sinar Harian. He highlighted that turtles are protected under the Fisheries Act 1985, and such incidents reflect a lack of awareness about the importance of preserving increasingly threatened marine species. Roslan emphasised that anyone found disturbing, capturing, or destroying turtle habitats could face strict penalties under the Fisheries Act 1985, which imposes fines ranging from RM500 to RM20,000. Continuous monitoring is being conducted at key turtle landing sites in the state, including Tioman Island, Kuala Rompin, Cherating Beach, and Tanjung Batu Nenasi in Pekan. In a call to action, Roslan urged local communities and tourism operators to play a role in protecting turtles. "We are all responsible for preserving the state's marine resources. Report any suspicious activities immediately to ensure these turtles remain safe and continue to land in our waters," he stated. Roslan reaffirmed the department's commitment to turtle conservation and ongoing public education and awareness activities. PAS rallies against Anwar amid reform stalemate
POLITICAL analyst Roslan Shahir criticised calls for Malaysians to help Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, describing it as a desperate move showing growing public rejection of his leadership. Roslan referred to Prof Wong Chin Huat's article in Sinar Harian in which he urges support for Anwar. PAS is seizing on the judicial crisis fiasco to rally its supporters and the wider public ahead of the planned mass protest on July 26 at Dataran Merdeka. The party hopes that a large turnout will drive home their message: that Anwar's leadership is losing public support. On the other hand, backing the PAS move, Roslan said Anwar has failed to fulfil election promises and his reform agenda was merely to gain power, as issues like corruption, cronyism, and rising living costs remain unresolved. Roslan stated that people have lost faith in Anwar and pledged support for the upcoming protest, declaring it the true voice of the people demanding leadership change. He made these remarks in response to Prof Wong Chin Huat's warning that if Anwar fails to implement governance reforms, such as ensuring judicial independence, he risks losing public support to Perikatan Nasional, which is portraying itself as a cleaner and more credible alternative. In this article, Prof Wong Chin Huat uses an old Cold War joke to illustrate that truths are often hidden as state secrets. He discusses the recent controversy over leaked minutes from the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting, which allegedly showed a judge with misconduct issues still being proposed as Chief Judge of Malaya. Prof Wong argued that if investigations are for spreading false information, it would prove the judiciary is clean. But if they focus on leaking state secrets, it implies the allegation is true. He stressed that Anwar and his government should use this crisis to strengthen judicial independence rather than punish whistleblowers. Wong suggested tightening the JAC Act so judge appointments are truly determined by the JAC, not by the PM. He frames the PM's role as similar to a 'postman' conveying recommendations to the King, which would not diminish his dignity but instead uphold judicial freedom under Anwar's Madani government. He further highlighted that Anwar's daughter, Nurul Izzah's presence at the Bar Council's 'March for Justice' signals that Anwar might be ready to reinforce judicial integrity. Prof Wong ends by urging Anwar's loyalists to listen to reform voices within his coalition, like Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, instead of attacking them, concluding: 'If you love Anwar, then help him raise the flag of reform high and proud. Reform does not necessarily need Anwar, but Anwar certainly needs reform.' — July 19, 2025
