Much-loved Carlton champion Sam Docherty announces retirement, will play final game against Hawthorn

Beloved Carlton champion Sam Docherty has announced his retirement from the AFL. The 31-year-old will play his 184th and final game on Thursday night against Hawthorn with the Blues to pay tribute to the former captain at their next home game against the Suns. It brings an end to a remarkable career that has seen Docherty overcome multiple cancer diagnoses and multiple knee reconstructions. He was twice diagnosed with testicular cancer, the second bout which spread through to his lungs and stomach. Docherty also overcame three ACL tears throughout his career to return to the field. While he will never taste premiership success, he leaves the game with a string of individual honours, including Carlton best and fairest in 2016, an All-Australian in 2017 and the club's co-captain from 2019-2021. 'When I was a kid my entire family used to climb into a van and drive from Phillip Island to the MCG for Round 1 every year. For me to get the chance to go on and play in those games, and also captain the club that I grew up supporting – I can honestly say it's a dream come true,' Docherty said. 'To have built the most incredible friendships over the last 14 years which I will take with me for the rest of my life, I am so incredibly thankful and I appreciate everyone who has supported me through it all. 'Perspective is such a valuable thing, and that is what I am most grateful for in my career. When my career started I thought a footballer had to define themselves by the accolades they achieved: while I am certainly grateful for those that have come my way, I will leave this game with so much more. 'The experiences I have had not just in my football career, but in life, have moved the goal posts for me – while there has been no shortage of challenges, because of what I have been through I have been allowed to meet so many amazing people and have had the opportunity to have an impact far greater than kicking or handballing a football ever could. 'My wife Nat night has been my rock through everything: I knew when I faced every challenge, we would be doing it together. I cannot thank her enough for her support and I can't wait to begin the next chapter of our lives together with Ruby and Myles.' Taken with pick No.12 in the 2011 AFL draft, Docherty spent two years at Brisbane before joining Carlton. He quickly cemented his place in the Blues' best team before missing two full seasons in 2018 and 2019 with successive ACL tears. Docherty returned to the field in 2020 but was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the end of the season. Following treatment, he remarkably returned to the field for the opening round in 2021. But a second occurrence later in the season saw him miss the remainder of the year and step down as co-captain. Docherty remarkably returned for the opening round of 2022 and played every game that year. The much-loved player suffered another ACL tear in the opening round of 2024, but pulled off another remarkable return to feature in the club's elimination final later that year. Carlton coach Michael Voss paid tribute to Carlton champion. 'For every challenge Sam has faced, he has turned it into a triumph,' Voss said. 'I still remember clear as day the first face-to-face conversation I had with Sam at the back end of 2021: we went for a walk and he told me he was going to play in Round 1 in a few months' time. To see him defy the odds and do that, to kick that goal against the Tigers – that typifies what a remarkable mindset he has. 'He has captained our club, won a best and fairest, All Australian and been a sounding board for so many of our younger players, and all those things only tell half the story of the Sam Docherty impact. What he has done and will keep doing in the community continues to be an inspiration. 'Our football club is forever grateful for Sam and the sacrifices he made to be able to pull on the Navy Blue – we wish him, his wife Nat and Ruby and Myles nothing but happiness for their next chapter. They know they will always be able to call Carlton home.'

‘A triumph': Cancer survivor calls time on AFL career

After overcoming two bouts of testicular cancer and two ACL injuries to forge an AFL career which included All-Australian honours and a club best and fairest, Carlton star Sam Docherty has announced his retirement. Docherty will play his 18th and final game against Hawthorn on Friday night, having established himself as a player Carlton coach Michael Voss said had turned very challenge he'd faced into a 'triumph'. Not only was Docherty a best and fairest winner at Carlton, he also captained the club, having overcome a raft of battles to forge a career to remember. Docherty missed all of the 2018 and 2019 seasons after undergoing back-to-back ACL reconstructions. But on his return in 2020 to he was diagnosed with the first of two bouts of testicular cancer. Berlin E-Prix winner Mitch Evans becomes Formula E's joint-most successful driver, ties with this driver

Image credit: Formula E As Mitch Evans crossed the finish line at the Berlin E-Prix on Saturday, the Jaguar TCS Racing driver joked on the radio with his team that they might have to remind him where the podium was. He said he had forgotten after such a long wait for a win — or even a podium. Evans had won the Formula E Round 1 race in Sao Paulo in December, but since then, he had failed to finish in the top ten in any of the following 11 races. Mitch Evans' radio footage from Berlin E-Prix Formula E later shared the radio footage of Evans on X. As his team congratulated him, he replied, 'Feels like it's been a lifetime. I forgot where the podium is, so you might have to tell me.' Reacting to a video of his win on Instagram, a fan wrote, 'Screaming & crying!!! What an absolutely phenomenal drive!!! Such a talented driver!' View this post on Instagram A post shared by ColorsTV (@colorstv) Speaking about his win at the Tempelhof Airport Circuit on Saturday, Evans said, 'I wasn't expecting that today. It's been difficult for us since São Paulo. There were tricky conditions, and I was managing some issues with the brakes towards the end of the race, which wasn't easy. I was quite happy with a bit of a gap, but nonetheless, the car was competitive throughout the race and there were some good strategy calls from the team. My guys did so well. There's always some work to do, but this is a nice reward for everyone back at Jaguar TCS Racing.' Evans had secured pole position in the qualifying session. The Duels were cancelled due to rain, so the grid was determined based on the results of the group stage. Mitch Evans has 14 wins in Formula E Formula E later announced that Evans is now tied for the most wins in the championship's history. He and Sebastien Buemi both have 14 career victories. Reacting to the post, a fan wrote, '14 and counting! Congratulations Mitch, many more wins to come.' Another wrote, 'History created in style.' What's next for Crabtree Valley Mall under new ownership

Crabtree Valley Mall's new owners promise to give the shopping center a $60 million facelift in the coming months. Long term, they're weighing whether to redevelop any of the mall's property. Why it matters: Crabtree Valley Mall remains one of the region's dominant shopping centers even after more than five decades of operation and the introduction of more competition from new shopping developments. Its new owners say it generates $429 million in annual sales and has over 200 tenants, including premier ones like Apple, Barnes & Noble and LEGO. Driving the news: Macerich, a real estate company that operates malls nationwide, including Tysons Corner Center in Virginia and Scottsdale Fashion Square in Arizona, bought Crabtree last month for $290 million. In the coming weeks and months, the company plans to spend $60 million in upgrades like new lighting and signage, a revitalized food court and family play area and new furniture and greenery in the common areas. It also plans to make upgrades to the site's stormwater infrastructure. Flooding has been a longtime problem on the property, especially as the nearby Crabtree Creek can flood during heavy rainfalls. What they're saying: Cory Scott, executive vice president of asset management at Macerich, said his firm was first attracted to Crabtree because of its presence in a growing market. But after talks with tenants during the due diligence period, Macerich said, it was Crabtree's long reputation in the community that helped solidify its decision. "It has a fantastic tenant mix, with some of the best retailers in the space and good restaurants," Scott told Axios. "We're going to take what we do best with our leasing, management and redevelopment teams and take it to the next level." Zoom in: He said Macerich hopes to leverage its relationships with retailers and restaurants to bring in new tenants and keep existing ones. Scott believes there's a large opportunity at the mall to include more experiential retailers and restaurants, as they have at other locations, including Round 1 bowling and arcade and the social gaming concept Level 99. Between the lines: It remains to be seen, however, if Macerich plans to add more mixed-use development there, like apartments or offices, Scott said. The mall's previous owner proposed building a 30-story tower on the former site of the Sears at the mall, though those plans never moved forward. Dick's House of Sport now plans to take over the former Sears space, CBS17 reported.

How Paul George helped the Thunder and Pacers reach the 2025 NBA Finals

How Paul George helped the Thunder and Pacers reach the 2025 NBA Finals At this point in the playoffs, teams parade around celebrities as their pseudo-mascots. You see it all the time with Los Angeles and New York. Smaller markets like Oklahoma City and Indiana rely on former players to show up and give home crowds an extra shot of energy. As the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers prepare to square off in the 2025 NBA Finals, they could make like a pair of divorced parents and share that honor with Paul George. In Game 1, he could be courtside at OKC. Game 3, the same deal at Indiana. While not intentionally, the future Hall-of-Famer helped both franchises reach this point. No matter who wins the NBA Finals, a franchise will experience its first championship. The Thunder punched their first ticket back to the championship round since 2012. It was an even longer gap for the Pacers from their last visit in 2000. Both NBA franchises are forever linked because of one player — George. The multi-time All-Star is one of the defining players of the 2010s. He was a consistent 20-plus point scorer who was viewed as one of the best defenders on several title contenders. But his biggest contribution to a championship may be his trade value. Not his on-court production. Both the Thunder and Pacers have had several George trades that catapulted them to this space. A modern-day Herschel Walker, here's how George helped OKC and Indiana get to the NBA Finals: The original PG trade Before we dive into George's contributions, let's look back at when he was first traded. The Thunder and Pacers shocked the NBA world when George was traded to OKC in July 2017. After openly flirting with the Lakers, Indiana did what was best for itself. George was traded to the Thunder for Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis. That's it. Fresh off his MVP season and a Round 1 exit, Russell Westbrook was paired back up with a perennial All-Star forward. The move was needed as the Thunder had no other way to upgrade their roster and not waste the prime of one of the best players. Meanwhile, the Pacers went with two franchise cornerstones with room to grow over draft capital. Oladipo was fresh off a bad year but was rejuvenated in Indiana. He enjoyed his best seasons there with two All-Star bids before injuries cut his career short. Sabonis grew from a forgettable rookie to one of the best players. How PG helped the Thunder On a one-year rental, the Thunder went out of their comfort zone and took a massive gamble. George was only under contract for his first season. He was set to be a free agent after the 2017-18 campaign. OKC understood the risk of him walking away with nothing in hand and had full confidence that its culture would be enough to convince him to stay in his year. The bet paid off. George stayed in OKC on a four-year, $137 million deal. The Thunder celebrated the massive franchise moment with a party. It was a bit of redemption, as only two years had passed since Kevin Durant left them at the altar. George went on to have a career season in 2018-19. He averaged 28 points and 8.2 rebounds, which was enough to finish third in the MVP award. Despite his individual success, the Thunder had another Round 1 exit. With the highest payroll ever, OKC felt cornered on what it could do to improve its roster. In comes the Clippers. Needing George to convince Kawhi Leonard to sign, LA gave up a historic draft package that headlined a blockbuster deal. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Danilo Gallinari were also part of the deal. Let's just say that LA didn't get its bang for its buck. It only had one Western Conference Finals appearance in the Kawhi-PG era. Meanwhile, the Thunder went out like bandits. Gilgeous-Alexander blossomed into an MVP winner. The Clippers gifted Jalen Williams to OKC with their 2022 lottery pick. We're still waiting out the final details of the five-year-old trade as the Thunder could still own LA's 2026 first-round pick. Gilgeous-Alexander and Williams are the Thunder's two best players. They were All-Star teammates. Both were given to them by the Clippers in the modern-day Herschel Walker trade. OKC is now four wins away from running another victory lap around Intuit Dome. How PG helped the Pacers This one takes a couple of extra steps. There's no direct lineage between George and the Pacers' current run, but he was the first part of a two-part transaction sequence that has led Indiana back to the NBA Finals for the first time in 25 years. While Oladipo was the immediate prize, Sabonis quietly developed in the background. He eventually usurped his teammate as Indiana's best player. Turns out, OKC trying to make him a stretch four probably wasn't his best developmental plan. Sabonis turned into an old-school, back-of-the-basket player. His first two All-Star bids were with the Pacers. He turned into a double-double machine that could facilitate in the post. He averaged 16.3 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists at Indiana. Really solid numbers that put him among the 30 best players. Shaking things up, the Pacers shocked the NBA world again. They traded Sabonis to the Sacramento Kings for Tyrese Haliburton in a multi-player deal. It was a soft rebuild for Indiana as tanking is a foreign concept to the franchise. Haliburton was in his second season. He finished third in Rookie of the Year. He was viewed as one of the best young point guards in the league at the time, but De'Aaron Fox's presence made it an awkward backcourt fit. The Kings pivoted and made a deal to bolster their frontcourt. The trade was viewed as a win-win for a while until Haliburton slowly sprinted past Sabonis among the NBA's best players. The two-time All-Star has been the Pacers' franchise player for the last few years. He's been one of the best playmakers in that period. He's averaged 19.5 points and 10.1 assists in Indiana. Catching fire at the right time, Haliburton has headlined the Pacers' miracle run to the NBA Finals. Late-game heroics and a scorching-hot offense have helped Indiana return to basketball's biggest stage. They also enjoyed a little bit of luck along the way.
