Madeira native Caty McNally, Venus Williams awarded wild cards to Cincinnati Open

Venus Williams and Caty McNally have been awarded the first two wild card spots to next month's Cincinnati Open in Mason, the tournament announced July 23. McNally, a Cincinnati native and Madeira High School product, recently returned to the WTA tour after underdoing elbow surgery. McNally hasn't played in her hometown tournament since 2022. "It's crazy to think it's been that long since I've played in Cincinnati," McNally told The Enquirer July 18. "Getting to play there would be incredible and rewarding." More: World No. 1s Aryna Sabalenka, Jannik Sinner headline 2025 Cincinnati Open player field At Wimbledon, McNally won her first-round match and had World No. 3 Iga Swiatek on the ropes in the Round of 64 before falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. McNally was the only player to win a set against Swiatek at Wimbledon, who would go on to cruise to her sixth Grand Slam. Ten days later, McNally won her first WTA event in two years by capturing a title at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Rhode Island. McNally, who is currently ranked No. 129, is 1-4 all-time in the singles draw at the Cincinnati Open. She beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the Round of 64 in 2022 before falling to Ons Jabeur. Williams, 45, just became the second-oldest player to win a singles match on the WTA tour by defeating Cincinnati native Peyton Stearns in the DC Open July 22. The seven-time Grand Slam winner had not played in a tour event since March 2024. Williams' last win on the tour was in the 2023 Cincinnati Open and she'll try to notch another upset at the Lindner Family Tennis Center next month. Williams reached the Cincinnati Open semifinals in 2012 and the quarterfinals in 2019. Auburn basketball's Tahaad Pettiford arrested, charged with DUI

This story has been updated to include new information. AUBURN — Tahaad Pettiford, the lone returnee from Auburn basketball's latest Final Four squad, has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Lee County Sherriff's Office. Pettiford, 19, was booked at midnight Saturday and has been released on a $1,000 bond, according to the sherriff's office arrest database. According to Alabama state law, persons under the age of 21 with a blood alcohol concentration of .02% or higher can be charged with DUI. 'We are aware of the situation, and we will handle internally with Tahaad and his family," Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement Saturday morning. "We take these matters seriously and will learn and grow from it moving forward.' A rising sophomore, Pettiford shined in his first season on the Plains as the Tigers' third-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points and 3.0 assists per game. During Auburn's run to the Final Four, he was vital, averaging 17.3 points between the Round of 64 and Elite Eight. He scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, in Auburn's NCAA Tournament wins over Creighton and Michigan. This offseason, Pettiford entered the NBA Draft process, but ultimately withdrew his name May 28, despite an NBA Combine invitation and a handful of first-round projections. Mason Howell wins medalist honors at 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur; match-play bracket set

It has been quite the two-month stretch for Mason Howell. The 18-year-old rising high school senior from Georgia qualified for the U.S. Open last month, winning his qualifier. Now, he has won medalist honors at the biggest junior event in the world. Howell finished at 7-under 134 Tuesday to earn the top seed for match play at the 2025 U.S. Junior Amateur. The top 64 players advanced to match play after two rounds of stroke play at Trinity Forest and Brook Hollow in Dallas, and for the first time since 2008, there was no playoff to whittle the field down to 64 players because that's how many finished at 3 over or better. 'It's just the first step complete,' Howell said. 'Looking forward to the rest of the week and seeing if I can take it deep into match play and hopefully win this sucker. I played really well today, and I really like this golf course.' All play moves to Trinity Forest for match play, which is hosting its first USGA event. Charlie Woods, the son of 15-time major champion and nine-time USGA victor Tiger Woods, finished at 14 over following stroke play to miss the cut. It was his second appearance in the U.S. Junior, a tournament his pops won thrice from 1991-93. Meanwhile, Howell's side of the bracket is loaded with many of the top juniors in the world, and his Round of 64 match is no slacker. He has Henry Guan, an Oklahoma State commit ranked 21st in Junior Golf Scoreboard. Also on the top half of the bracket: defending champion Trevor Gutschewski (No. 28 in JGS), Luke Colton (No. 2), Miles Russell (No. 1), defending runner-up Tyler Watts (No. 4), Michael Riebe (No. 5), Tyler Mawhinney (No. 36), Sohan Patel (No. 27), Rayhan Latief and Tomas Restrepo. Match play begins at 9 a.m. ET Wednesday.
