Man shot dead after severing sister's arm: Vic police
A man has been shot dead by police after allegedly severing his sister's arm during an attack which left her in a coma with life-threatening injuries. Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the altercation was reported to police by the pair's mother and took place at a home in Yarra Junction, 55km east of Melbourne, on Wednesday evening. Police heard screaming coming from inside the home shortly after arriving at the scene. "They then entered the bedroom and were confronted by a female who appeared to be unconscious and appeared to have a limb that was partially severed, being strangled by a man," Mr Barrett told reporters on Thursday. Officers deployed their Tasers three times in an attempt to stop the assault, but the man continued to strangle his sister, Mr Barrett said. An officer discharged their firearm, fatally shooting the man. "This is tragic, it's every police officer's nightmare," Mr Barrett said. "Both police officers are distressed. They understand the realities of their job ... but it's not what they come to work to do." The woman was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she remains in a coma with life-threatening injuries. Mr Barrett said homicide detectives and forensic examiners remain at the scene, which he described as "graphic and dramatic". He confirmed a sword was also found inside the home. Premier Jacinta Allan described the shooting as distressing and said her thoughts were with the family. "They're going to be deeply, deeply traumatised by this tragedy," she said. The man is known to police through his medical condition. State Coroner John Cain attended the scene on Wednesday night. Homicide Squad detectives will investigate the matter with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is standard procedure for a fatal police shooting.

'Stabbed, beaten and left bleeding': Indian-origin man brutally attacked with machete in Australia
An Indian-origin man in Australia is recovering in hospital after a brutal machete attack by a group of teenagers left him with multiple severe injuries, including a nearly severed hand. The attack took place outside a shopping centre in Melbourne's Altona Meadows suburb on the evening of July 19, the Australian Today reported. The victim, Saurabh Anand, 33, was walking home after picking up medicine from the Central Square Shopping Centre when he was assaulted by a group of five teenagers in what appears to be a random and violent mugging. Speaking to The Age from his hospital bed, Anand said he was on a phone call when he noticed movement nearby. Before he could react, one of the boys began rifling through his pockets while another punched him repeatedly. A third teenager then pulled out a machete and held it to his throat. 'They didn't stop there,' Anand recalled. 'I was just trying to survive.' The attackers went on to stab and slash him in the shoulder and back, leaving him with a fractured spine, broken bones in his arm, and serious head injuries. Bloodied and disoriented, Anand somehow managed to stumble outside the centre and cry out for help. Bystanders immediately rushed to his aid and called emergency services. He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where doctors initially feared his left hand would have to be amputated due to the severity of his injuries. However, after hours of emergency surgery, which included the insertion of screws into his wrist, surgeons were able to reattach the hand. 'The doctors have told me the injuries are so extensive, they can't say how well the recovery will go,' he said. Police have arrested four teenage boys in connection with the attack and are still searching for a fifth suspect. A 14-year-old from Wyndham has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing injury, robbery, and unlawful assault. He has been remanded to appear before a children's court on August 15. Two 15-year-olds from the Hobsons Bay area, facing similar charges, have been released on bail and are expected in court on August 11. A fourth teen, another 14-year-old, is expected to be charged soon. Anand expressed distress upon learning that two of the attackers had been granted bail. He also said he is now afraid to return home and is staying in the hospital, where his partner has remained by his side since the incident. 'I'm just seeking justice,' he said. The attack comes at a time when knife crime and youth violence are on the rise in the Australian state of Victoria. According to official data, police are currently making over 200 arrests a day and are confiscating a growing number of bladed weapons, including machetes. In response to the spike in such incidents, the Victorian government has introduced stricter bail laws for repeat offenders and announced a complete ban on machete possession, which will come into effect from September 1.

Ryan Cho: Melbourne surgeon allegedly secretly recorded hospital staff using toilet, showering
A Victorian surgeon has been accused of secretly recording hospital staff using the bathroom after police allegedly uncovered 4500 intimate images and videos on his devices. Ryan Cho, whose medical licence was suspended earlier this month, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday evening. The 28-year-old was initially arrested on July 10 after staff at the Austin Hospital allegedly located a mobile phone recording in an employee bathroom. The court was told he was charged with stalking and using an optical surveillance device and bailed by police. But Mr Cho was rearrested on Friday after police allegedly located 4500 intimate videos and photos categorised and labelled on a laptop hard drive seized that contained 10,374 total files. He was charged with five new offences – three counts of producing intimate images, one count using an optical surveillance device and one count failing to comply with direction to assist. Called to give evidence, Senior Constable Neral Baykur told the court Mr Cho was allegedly identified through an internal Austin Hospital investigation after a mesh bag containing a mobile phone, powerbank and clothes was located in a staff toilet. She said three hours of video footage allegedly located on the phone captured seven minutes of Mr Cho setting up the device before five people used the toilet over the following 40 minutes. Senior Constable Baykur said police allegedly identified folders believed to represent the Austin Hospital, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She said videos allegedly date between 2021 and 2025 and capture staff using toilet or shower facilities. 'The accused has named at least 460 victims in total,' she said. 'However we have not yet confirmed 'yes those are the victims'.' Senior Constable Baykur said another 5222 files allegedly located in a folder titled 'other' appears to be a residential setting. The officer strongly opposed bail, alleging Mr Cho was a flight risk, had limited ties to the community as a Singapore national who could no longer work in his field and could interfere with witnesses. She agreed there was likely the potential for further charges if additional alleged victims are identified. Senior Constable Baykur said the accused man's alleged actions appeared to be 'calculated and obsessed', requiring enormous amounts of time. She told the court the allegations were likely to have a 'significant impact' on the community, noting Austin Hospital staff are now fearful to use internal facilities. The officer said the alleged material from the Austin Hospital appeared to have been created in 2025, Peter MacCallum Centre from 2024, Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2024 and 2025 and a fourth folder titled 'Med' was from 2022 to 2023. Mr Cho's lawyer, George Balot, applied for bail for his client noting his parents had arrived into the country, were offering a $10,000 bail guarantee and would monitor his bail compliance. Mr Balot told the court his client had commenced treatment with both a psychologist and a sexologist after his initial arrest. 'It is conceded it is a strong prosecution case,' he said. 'What we say Your Honour is the risk of reoffending … can be managed and it can be managed by special conditions.' Mr Balot said his client had complied with bail for the past two weeks 'impeccably', was prepared to forgo access to a mobile phone and would be strictly monitored by his parents if released. 'They're mortified by the allegations and they want to make sure he's treated as soon as possible and not in a custodial setting,' he said. Mr Ballot said Mr Cho had enrolled in a program for alleged sex offenders set to begin in August and noted the charges would be contested. The court was told Mr Cho became a permanent resident of Australia in 2017 where he completed his doctorate in medicine at Monash University in 2022. Refusing bail, Magistrate James Henderson said he was not satisfied the risk posed by Mr Cho could be mitigated with conditions. 'The allegations at this stage are of course serious allegations they relate to a huge amount of intimate videos,' he said. 'There is said to be 10,000 files in existence, there has been careful classification of those files said to contain intimate depictions of … people toileting and showering in staff facilities without their knowledge.' In a statement, Victoria Police said investigators had identified several additional hospitals between 2020 and 2025 as workplaces of interest. 'Police have begun the process of contacting the additional hospitals and those potentially impacted during the time of the man's employment. This process is due to take some time,' a spokeswoman said. Mr Cho is expected to return to court in November 2025.

Man stabbed and shot by masked offenders during 'graphic' Gladstone Park home invasion
Police are the seeking public help to identify five individuals behind a "violent and graphic" targeted attack at a home in Melbourne's north-west. The incident occurred early Thursday morning at Trentham Drive in Gladstone Park, where a couple's home was broken into while they slept. Police said five people disguised in hoods and face coverings first attempted to enter through the front door before making it in through a rear entrance. Detective Inspector Adam Tilley said the disturbance awoke the occupants, a 60-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman. The man then approached the offenders, who were in possession of knives, a hammer and a firearm. "An assault has then occurred, quite a graphic assault," Detective Inspector Tilley said. "The 60-year-old male has been struck about the body numerous times with a hammer and also then stabbed about the body. "He has also sustained a gunshot wound to the arm." The man was attacked over five to 10 minutes, police said, and sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital for treatment. Police said the 57-year-old woman, who remained in the bedroom, was also approached and threatened with a firearm but was not injured. Police believe the incident was targeted, saying the group made demands for money and asked about the location of another male who is known to authorities. Detective Inspector Tilley said police were looking into that man's whereabouts and had dispatched a "safety message" to his family. "This is a violent and graphic incident that's occurred here for two occupants at their home," he said. "To be woken by five offenders, let alone [for them] to be armed with a firearm, knives and also a hammer, is extremely concerning to us, and that's why we're really seeking the public's support. "It's a concern that the offenders are still out in the community." An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
