The US State Department has issued an advisory for its citizen, asking them to avoid travelling to areas within 50 kilometres of the Thailand-Cambodia border. A Thai military mobile unit fires towards Cambodia's side as Thailand and Cambodia continued to exchange heavy artillery for a second day on Friday. (Reuters) The advisory comes as the Thai-Cambodian border tensions quickly escalated on Wednesday. Noting that the Royal Thai Government has ordered a full shutdown of the border crossings in both Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, including both land and maritime routes, the State Department advised its citizens over the travel to these areas. "The Ministry of Public Health announced full or partial closure of 11 hospitals within the border region and the Ministry of Education announced the temporary closure of 751 schools across the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Buri Ram, Surin, Sa Kaeo and Chanthaburi," it added. The advisory said that American citizens living or travelling in the affected region should adhere to the directions from the Thai security services and consult local government authorities for the latest information. Both Thai and Cambodian military forces continued to exchange heavy fire on Friday, with at least 16 people losing their lives in the border battle so far. 'Prepared To Intensify Self-Defence': Thailand Withdraws Cambodia Envoy, Shuts Borders Amid Clashes
Thailand has recalled its ambassador from Cambodia and urged a reciprocal move after deadly cross-border clashes. Bangkok also warned of escalating defence if attacks continue. The Thai government on Wednesday said it was withdrawing its ambassador from Cambodia, and requested the neighbouring country to recall its ambassador to Thailand, following the worst fighting between the countries in 13 years, which led to more than 1 lakh Thai civilians fleeing the country. An official release by the Royal Thai Government mentioned that the country's government is prepared to intensify its self-defence measures 'if Cambodia persists in its armed attack and violations upon Thailand's sovereignty". According to news agency PTI, the country also declared that it was closing its border crossings with Cambodia from northeastern provinces following a landmine incident in which a Thai soldier lost a leg. A Thai Army statement said five soldiers were wounded when one of them stepped on a land mine in a border area. 'The Royal Thai Government condemns in the strongest terms the violations of Thailand's sovereignty and international law, following the laying of anti-personnel landmines within Thai territory that caused injuries to Thai military personnel while Thai soldiers were patrolling on 16 and 23 July 2025," the country's foreign ministry stated in a release. 'Therefore, taking into consideration the severity of the situation as a result of Cambodia's intentional and premeditated act against Thailand, the Royal Thai Government has decided to downgrade our diplomatic relations and recall the Thai Ambassador to Cambodia back, as well as requests the Government of Cambodia to recall its Ambassador to Thailand, respectively," it mentioned. 'The Royal Thai Government calls upon Cambodia to take responsibility for the incidents that have occurred, cease attacks against civilian and military targets, and stop all actions that violate Thailand's sovereignty," the release mentioned. 'The Royal Thai Government is prepared to intensify our self-defense measures if Cambodia persists in its armed attack and violations upon Thailand's sovereignty in accordance with international law and principles," it added. Thailand scrambled an F-16 fighter jet to bomb targets in Cambodia on Thursday after artillery volleys from both sides killed at least 11 civilians, as border tension boiled over into rare armed conflict between the Southeast Asian countries. Both blamed each other for starting a morning clash at a disputed area of the border, which quickly escalated from small arms fire to heavy shelling in at least six locations, 209 kilometres (130 miles) apart along a frontier where sovereignty has been disputed for more than a century. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 07:36 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. At least 12 killed as Thailand and Cambodia exchange fire on disputed border
Both nations accused each other of starting the military clashes and have downgraded diplomatic relations since Wednesday. Thailand also sealed all land border crossings with Cambodia. Relations between the south-east Asian neighbours have deteriorated sharply since an armed confrontation in May that killed a Cambodian soldier. Nationalist passions on both sides have further inflamed the situation. The Thai army said the most casualties occurred in Si Sa Ket province, where six people were killed after shots were fired at a fuel station. At least two dozen people were injured in three border provinces. The Thai army said it launched air strikes on Thursday on ground military targets in Cambodia, while the Cambodian Defence Ministry said the Thai jets dropped bombs on a road near the ancient Preah Vihear temple. Clashes are ongoing in at least six areas along the border, Thai Defence Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri said. The first clash on Thursday morning happened in an area near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple along the border of Thailand's Surin province and Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey province. A video from Thailand's side showed people running from their homes and hiding in a concrete bunker as explosions sounded. Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Cambodia has attacked military and non-military sites in Thailand, including a hospital. 'The Royal Thai Government calls upon Cambodia to take responsibility for the incidents that have occurred, cease attacks against civilian and military targets, and stop all actions that violate Thailand's sovereignty,' said Nikorndej Balankura, the ministry's spokesperson. 'The Royal Thai Government is prepared to intensify our self-defence measures if Cambodia persists in its armed attack and violations upon Thailand's sovereignty in accordance with international law and principles.' Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet said his country had always maintained a position of peaceful resolution of problems, but 'we have no choice but to respond with armed force against armed aggression'. Earlier on Thursday, Cambodia said it was downgrading diplomatic relations with Thailand to their lowest level, expelling the Thai ambassador and recalling all Cambodian staff from its embassy in Bangkok. That was in response to Thailand withdrawing its ambassador and expelling the Cambodian ambassador on Wednesday in protest at a land mine blast that wounded five Thai soldiers. The Thai army said of Thursday's initial clash that its forces heard a drone before seeing six Cambodian soldiers moving closer to Thailand's station. It said Thai soldiers tried to shout at them to defuse the situation but the Cambodian side opened fire. Cambodia's Defence Ministry also said Thailand employed a drone first before opening fire, and that Cambodia 'acted strictly within the bounds of self-defence, responding to an unprovoked incursion by Thai troops that violated our territorial integrity'. The Thai embassy in Phnom Penh said there were clashes at several border areas that could continue to escalate. It urged Thai nationals in Cambodia to leave the country if they could and advised others not to travel to Cambodia unless absolutely necessary. On Wednesday, a land mine blast near the border wounded five Thai soldiers, one of whom lost a leg. A week earlier, a land mine in a different contested area exploded and wounded three Thai soldiers. Thai authorities have alleged the mines were newly laid along paths that by mutual agreement were supposed to be safe. They said the mines were Russian-made and not of a type employed by Thailand's military. Cambodia rejected Thailand's account as 'baseless accusations', pointing out that many unexploded mines and other ordnance are a legacy of 20th century wars and unrest. The border dispute has also caused political fallout in Thailand, whose prime minister was suspended from office to be investigated for possible ethics violations over the matter. Border disputes are longstanding issues that have caused periodic tensions between the countries. The most prominent and violent conflicts have been around the 1,000-year-old Preah Vihear temple. In 1962, the International Court of Justice recognised Cambodian sovereignty over the temple area in a ruling that became a major irritant in the relations of both countries. Cambodia went back to the court in 2011 after military clashes killed about 20 people. The court reaffirmed the ruling in 2013.

Thailand Deploys Fighter Jets Amid Cambodia Conflict Warning: Live Updates
Thailand launched airstrikes against Cambodian forces along their disputed border after troops exchanged fire in a dramatic eruption of tensions between the two Southeast Asian neighbors. The Cambodian foreign ministry accused Thai armed forces of launching an "unprovoked, premeditated and deliberate attacks on Cambodian positions along the border areas, including Tamone Thom Temple, Ta Krabey Temple and Mom Bei, in the provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey." The statement called it an "act of aggression constitutes a blatant and serious violation of international law". "The Royal Government of Cambodia condemns in the strongest possible terms this reckless and hostile act by Thailand," the foreign ministry said. "Such unprovoked military aggression not only endangers peace and stability along our shared border, but also demonstrates utter disregard for regional norms and international legal obligations. "Cambodia calls on Thailand to immediately cease all hostilities, withdraw its forces to its side of the border, and refrain from any further provocative actions that could escalate the situation." Phnom Penh also warned: "Cambodia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. However, Cambodia also reserves its inherent right to self-defense, as recognized under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, and will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its people." The Thai government accused Cambodian forces of laying anti-personnel landmines within Thai territory that caused injuries to patrolling troops in recent days, before the latest clash unfolded. In a statement, the Thai government said "heavy artillery was fired into the Thai military base and continued throughout the morning" on Thursday, July 24, also accusing Cambodian forces of hitting civilian areas, resulting in deaths. Thailand is recalling its ambassador to Cambodia in response, it said, and requested that Cambodia do the same. "The Royal Thai Government urges Cambodia to cease its repeated act which constitutes a severe violation of international law," the statement said. "Such actions fundamentally contradict the principles of good neighborly relations and good faith, and will further undermine Cambodia's reputation and credibility on the global stage.
