Danville's Royal Theater offers cheap, unique, family-friendly movie viewing experience

Bill Wright can tell you the exact seats he sat in next to his two daughters, Emmie, 6, and Danielle, 3, as they watched Polar Express inside Royal Theater back in 2004. The Danville resident and former police chief remembers the day being bitterly cold and snowing, but the memories he retains from that moment in time warm his heart to this day. That's why in 2017 when the theater came up for sale, Wright purchased the building and theater from a friend and local businessman who trusted him to preserve its nearly 100-year-old history. 'I went home and said, 'Honey, guess what I did,'' Wright remembers telling his wife, Sharon. 'She said, 'You did what?'' For a while, a management company would run the day-to-day operations of the theater, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the Wrights saw an opportunity to close down and renovate. Though the theater was established in 1914, it found its home at its current location on Danville's town square in 1927. For nearly a year, the two worked to bring the theater back to its original prestige. By comparing old photos, Wright says they were able to pick out the same paint colors and similar carpet. Through the renovation process, many old relics were found in the walls and attic. Now some sit on display as you walk in the front doors under the building's marquee lit with red, blue and gold bulbs. Old movie tickets, posters and even an old projector weighing a ton greet visitors. The theater contains one screen and 220 seats. Ticket prices are $5, and concessions are fairly priced. All in an effort to keep the theater attainable and family-focused.

Archer County Museum and Art Center to preserve history with Jailbird Fundraiser

ARCHER CO. (KFDX/KJTL) — People in Archer County will soon be raising 'bail money' as a fundraiser to support the Archer County Museum and Art Center. The ACMAC Jailbird Fundraiser is Saturday, March 29th, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Royal Theater on 113 E Main St, Archer City, TX 76351. Catholic charities serve and give back event The jail opened in 1910 before closing in 1974 and then being turned into a museum; however, the city eventually sold it because it could no longer afford maintenance expenses. Now, the ACMAC is working to raise funds to preserve the jail. This unique fundraiser sees people from Archer County and the surrounding areas come together to serve as 'inmates' seeking help raising their 'bail money,' with all the proceeds going toward saving the old jail. They've recently been working on roof repairs, which are almost done thanks to the fundraising efforts. Board member Jodi Shawver said that, as a history enthusiast, she encourages everyone to go out for a fun and unique experience. 'People should come to see the history and come to see what your friends have done so far. Last year was my first year to be involved. I didn't really know much about what was going on.' Jodi Shawver, Board Member, recalls. 'I thought I wasn't going to be released until I raised enough funds. And, luckily, it was a tour of the jail, a picture, and then, you know, kind of asking people, hey, I'm raising money. Will you help raise?' The night of history and fun will also include great food, entertainment, and plenty of competition. More information on registering for the fundraiser and festivities can be found here. Cookie ready for forever playmates and family

WICHITA COUNTY (KFDX/KJTL) — One sweet furry friend from the Humane Society of Wichita County is ready to find her forever playmates and family. Meet Cookie! This fun-sized one-year-old girl is playful and sweet as can be. 'Wayward Kin' to premiere at Archer City's Royal Theater She has plenty of energy, as she is still young, but Cookie would do great with other dogs, as she loves to play, and she would do great with children, too. While she is still a puppy, shelter staff assume she will only grow another couple of inches, staying relatively small. If you are interested in this adventurous girl or any of her other friends at the HSWC, contact them at (940) 855-4941. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
