RTO personnel carry out school vehicle checking drive in rain

1 2 Nagpur: Armed with only an umbrella, several RTO officials on Thursday carried out a special drive against vehicles transporting school children even during the rains. A total of 195 school transport vehicles have come under the scanner of the transport department in last 10 days as part of a special inspection drive aimed at ensuring the safety of schoolchildren. The action, taken by the Regional Transport Office (Nagpur City) and the Sub-Regional Transport Office (Nagpur East), led to the collection of a massive Rs9.78 lakh in penalties from violators found flouting the Motor Vehicles Act. The new school session began on June 23, and since then, the movement of vehicles transporting schoolchildren increased on city roads. The crackdown came in response to multiple complaints received by the transport authorities regarding unsafe travel conditions for children. Many auto-rickshaw drivers and private vehicle owners reportedly transported students in overcrowded and unsafe conditions—some even carrying more passengers than permitted. The inspection drive targeted a range of vehicles being used for school transport. Among the 195 vehicles penalised, the highest number of violations were found among auto-rickshaws, with 82 cases recorded and Rs86,000 in fines collected. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo School buses and vans accounted for 60 cases, attracting a fine of Rs5.5 lakh. Private vehicles were not far behind, with 38 cases and Rs3.4 lakh in penalties, while 15 e-rickshaws were also pulled up and fined a total of Rs2,000. Currently, Nagpur city has 2,191 registered school buses and vans. In addition, hundreds of autos, e-rickshaws, and private vehicles are informally engaged in student transport, often without proper permits or adherence to safety norms. The transport department's action is being seen as a necessary move to curb negligence and enforce accountability. Officials issued a stern warning to all school transport operators to comply strictly with road safety norms. Any further violations will not only attract higher penalties but also suspension of driving licences, the department said. The special drive will continue through the month of July, with transport officials conducting random checks at school premises and key traffic points. The campaign underscores the administration's resolve to prioritise student safety and bring undisciplined transport operations under control.

City MD kingpin, 5 aides nabbed from gay den-turned-narco hub

Nagpur: A 24-year-old former garment shop salesman-turned-mastermind of Nagpur's mephedrone (MD) trade was arrested in a dramatic pre-dawn crackdown on Friday. The three-month-long operation to destroy the contraband trade ring led to the arrest of Rahul alias Chill Shankar Lepse and his five aides apart from seizure of Rs5.5 lakh MD. Rahul Chill and his five aides were nabbed from an apartment — the den of gay men — near Chhatrapati Chowk under Dhantoli police jurisdiction. The accused used the apartment as a meeting point to evade police suspicion. The action revealed a vast MD peddling network spread from Nagpur-Mira Road (Thane district). Once a small-time worker at a shop in Mahal, Chill's rose to become Nagpur's MD kingpin. He set up a shoe business after making money from MD trade. Sources said Chill, as a cloth shop employee, went to Mumbai to bring garments where he got acquainted with a MD peddler and subsequently made a fortune. Chill was once arrested in 2019 for possessing MD and remained off the police radar after his release. On Friday, four teams of the crime branch's social service unit and anti-narcotics cell under senior inspectors Rahul Shire and Gajanan Gulhane were formed. The teams comprising head constable Sameer Shaikh, Ashwin Mange, Sheshrao Raut, Kunal Masram, and others started following Chill's aides to track him down. "Chill brings MD by train himself and doesn't rely on anyone. He handed over small quantities of MD to his aides to deliver to clients who hail from different walks of life," said a source, adding the entire deal and supply chains operated through WhatsApp and Signal app. Nagpur police commissioner Ravinder Singal tasked crime branch DCP Rahul Maknikar to bust Chill's gang and expose the supply network. The cops, after identifying Chill's close aides, fanned out to different locations in the city between 2.20am and 6.30am. The operation began with a tip-off about Chill and his accomplices peddling MD across Nagpur, said a source. Acting swiftly, the police laid a trap and raided the third-floor apartment. The raid uncovered 109 grams of MD powder valued at Rs5.45 lakh, cash Rs1.4 lakh, 11 mobile phones, syringes, six vehicles, and other materials collectively valued at Rs16 lakh. Chill's five accomplices Akshay alias Akki alias Bichhu Vinchurkar, Arif Mohammad Abdul Samad Sheikh (32), Sachin Ghode (46), Sarang Chaudhary (26) and Vinayak Deshmukh (32). The group was directly linked to an MD supplier, Irshad, from Mira Road, who remains at large. Chill, identified as the main conspirator, controlled the network, with Akshay and Arif supplying drugs, Sachin providing his flat as base, and Sarang and Vinayak acting as accomplices.

Pune civic body to step up action against people spitting in public spaces

Pune: Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is stepping up its efforts to combat public defacement and enforce sanitation norms, with a particular focus on deterring spitting in public places. Since the beginning of 2025, PMC has penalized 549 individuals, collecting a total of Rs5.5 lakh in fines. While there was a slight increase in April, the overall trend shows a decline in reported cases since Jan. In Jan, 223 cases were registered, dropping to 118 in Feb. Since March, the number of cases has remained in the double digits — 69 in March, 74 in April, and 65 in May. The fine for each offence is Rs1,000. PMC has added 10 new vehicles to its flying squads. These squads will now be better equipped to catch offenders violating solid waste management guidelines, including those spitting, using banned plastic, burning garbage, and littering. Previously, squad vehicles were shared across multiple ward offices, but with this addition, each of the 15 ward offices will now have a dedicated vehicle for robust enforcement. Anand Kulkarni, a medical practitioner from Hadapsar, said surveillance can effectively deter public nuisances. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo "Civic authorities should monitor busy areas through the existing CCTV network. Shantanu Gosavi, a resident of Kothrud, said, "Regular patrolling teams should be equipped with devices to record evidence of violations. Installing motion sensors and smart bins in sensitive areas can help track waste disposal patterns. The collected data can identify hotspots requiring increased vigilance." The fine ranges from Rs200 to Rs1,000 per offence. "The civic administration created a lot of awareness about public sanitation. Action was taken across civic areas, and the drive will continue in the days to come," head of PMC's solid waste department Sandip Kadam said.

Hazara launches land record digitisation project

The Hazara Division Commissioner has announced the launch of a pilot project to digitise land revenue records, beginning with a village in Haripur district. The initiative is designed to enhance transparency, streamline processes, and improve public convenience. Speaking during an official visit to the Abbottabad Press Club, Commissioner Syed Fayaz Ali Shah said that the digital system will allow citizens to pay bank fees online and access important documents such as the Jamabandi (land ownership record) and Fard (ownership certificate) from home—eliminating the need to visit Service Delivery Centres. "The provincial government is committed to implementing digital reforms across all departments to ensure better service delivery and greater accountability," he said, urging the media to continue playing its vital role in highlighting public concerns and administrative shortcomings. "Abbottabad's media has always demonstrated a constructive approach," he added. "Let us work together to promote transparency and the public good." During the visit, President of the Abbottabad Press Club Sardar Naveed Alam, General Secretary Raja Munir Khan, AUJ President Atif Qayoom, and General Secretary Saqib Khan briefed the commissioner on various issues affecting the Hazara Division. He also commended the Abbottabad Press Club for its initiatives supporting the welfare of journalists and highlighted recent successes in tax reforms.
