Phillies' Ranger Suarez Predicted to Make North of $25 Million Per Year in Free Agency

Phillies' Ranger Suarez Predicted to Make North of $25 Million Per Year in Free Agency originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suarez is in a contract year. He's set to hit free agency for the first time in his career after the 2025 season. Advertisement With plenty of teams likely to be interested, even if he's not the top option, Suarez is set to make a solid payday. In a segment on The Phillies Show, former general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. predicted a massive deal was on the horizon for Suarez in free agency. "I think his AAV will be somewhere between $25 and $28 million. $25 and $30 million," Amaro said. "So maybe a shorter deal and get the higher AAV so he can say 'hey, bigger AAV than somebody else.'" This is a significant upgrade in average annual value for Suarez. He was previously predicted to land a $20 million deal, but this prediction from Amaro is at least $5 million more than before. Advertisement But there's a reason for his increase in per-year value. Amaro believes that teams are concerned about Suarez's health. "I don't think anyone is going to give him the length," Amaro said. "The seven-year deal, the eight-year deal. I don't think they're going to do that because of the history." Due to Suarez's health issues over the past few years, teams might be scared off from offering a long-term deal. Instead, Suarez could land a shorter deal with a lot more money per year. Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suarez (55) reacts to his strikeout during a game against the Atlanta Braves during the sixth inning at Truist Mertens-Imagn Images If Amaro's prediction comes true, a massive payday would be on the horizon for Suarez, despite his concerning back injuries in recent years. Advertisement While the back injuries are an issue, his production on the mound is why teams would be willing to pay north of $20 million per year for Suarez. He has a 2.00 ERA through 11 starts, which includes a disastrous seven-earned run outing in his first start back from the injured list. Since then, he has been one of baseball's best pitchers, as he has a 1.19 ERA in ten starts. In the next few months, the Phillies must determine whether they want to cough up the money required to keep Suarez as part of their impressive rotation. Ex-Phillies GM Ruben Amaro: Nick Castellanos Disrespected Rob Thomson ‘A Whole Lot'

(AP Photo/Laurence Kesterson) Former Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said it was 'the right thing to do' for Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson to bench outfielder Nick Castellanos for Tuesday's game against the Marlins after Castellanos made an "inappropriate comment" to the manager a night earlier. On the Phillies Show podcast that dropped on Wednesday, Amaro said, 'I bet whatever [Castellanos] said to him that Rob Thomson wanted to beat his ass. I'm sure he wanted to fight him… Rob Thomson doesn't make those moves unless it was disrespectful.' Thomson said Castellanos made the comment after he was removed from Monday's game in the eighth inning for defensive purposes. He was replaced by Johan Rojas, who played center field while Max Kepler shifted from center to take over for Castellanos in right. Amaro, who is also part of the Phillies broadcast team, said on the podcast that he has no information on the comment that provoked Castellanos' benching. 'He probably had to disrespect [Thomson] a whole lot to get pulled out of that game because Thomson is not a knee-jerk guy. He is a very level-headed man. But at some point you have a breaking point and you can't be embarrassed by your players," Amaro said. Amaro also agreed with Thomson's decision to pull Castellanos for defensive purposes. 'I have to say that the move that Rob Thomson made was perfect,' Amaro said. 'Get the best defensive players there and go. That's what you do as a manager. You put the best defensive team out there. No disrespect to Castellanos.' Castellanos said of the incident, "I wasn't happy about it, spoke my mind. He said that I crossed a line. So, my punishment is I'm not playing." Castellanos' consecutive games streak ended at 236. The last game he missed for the Phillies was on Sept. 30, 2023. Thomson downplayed over the drama before Monday's game. "One of the many things about Nick that I love is that he's very emotional," the manager said. "He loves to play, and he loves to play every inning of every game. I just thought last night he made an inappropriate comment after he came out, and so today, he's not going to play. And I'm going to leave it at that." Castellanos, in his fourth season with the Phillies after signing a five-year $100 million contract in 2022, is hitting .278 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs this season.
