Risda Carnival 2025 targets 10k visitors with 60 local delicacies

KUALA LUMPUR: The Rasa Asli Desa Risda Carnival 2025 kicked off today, running until June 30, with organisers targeting over 10,000 visitors. The event features 28 entrepreneurs from 13 states presenting more than 60 types of local culinary delights. Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Datuk Rubiah Wang highlighted the ministry's support for rural entrepreneurs, particularly smallholders under the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda). 'Programmes like this not only add value in terms of marketing and sales, but also provide a real space to strengthen brands, business matching and market network development for rural entrepreneurs,' she said during the launch at Wangsa Walk. Rubiah noted that many participating entrepreneurs earn between RM5,000 and RM10,000 monthly, with some already recording RM1,000 to RM2,000 in sales on the first day. She expressed confidence in achieving the carnival's RM200,000 sales target. Themed 'Rasa Tulen, Sentuhan Istimewa' (Authentic Flavours, Special Touch), the event blends tradition with creativity, featuring dishes like kek lapis, rendang maman, and gulai temenung. Noorazlina Saramali, a 32-year-old entrepreneur from Beaufort, Sabah, shared her enthusiasm for introducing Sabahan specialties like kelupis and kucong to urban visitors. 'Kelupis is glutinous rice cooked with coconut milk and steamed in the same way as kucong, but kucong has a peanut filling flavoured with shrimp. I want to introduce kelupis to the people of Kuala Lumpur because this food is rarely available here,' she said. Siti Hajar Husnan, 39, from Negeri Sembilan, brought Johor's burasak and lepat loi, typically seasonal treats now available year-round thanks to retort processing. 'Actually, this is a seasonal food, but when we process it using the retort method, it can last up to a year and can be eaten anytime. We also sell it online on Shopee and TikTok, good thing there is always demand,' she said. The carnival also features the RisSMart 24 brand stall by Risda Agri Food Sdn Bhd (RAFI), offering pastries, wagyu skewers, and tom yam bowls. Additional activities include traditional cooking demos, a nostalgia-themed night showcase, and a kids' beauty pageant.

She emphasised that close cooperation between communities and law enforcement is vital to maintaining safety and security at the grassroots level. 'Today's crime is not like the past. Crime does not only occur in dark alleys, but also at the fingertips. Many are robbed via phone and social media,' she said in a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report. Rubiah, who is also Kota Samarahan MP, was speaking at the 'Jom Berambeh Mencegah Jenayah' townhall session organised by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) Sarawak Contingent in collaboration with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) and the Kota Samarahan District Office today. She revealed that over 2,000 online fraud cases were reported in Sarawak last year, resulting in losses totalling RM36 million, with pensioners, women, and students among the most common victims. On drug abuse, Rubiah noted that more than 6,000 addicts were recorded in Sarawak in 2023, particularly in suburban areas such as Kota Samarahan. 'Youths are not the cause of the problem. They are part of the solution,' she said, calling on young people to join programmes like Police Cadets, COP Friends, and community volunteer groups. She also voiced support for technology-driven crime prevention tools such as the PDRM's Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) mobile application. On a lighter note, Rubiah shared the origin story of Manchester City Football Club, which was founded in the 1880s as a means to curb youth crime in Manchester. 'If they can start with football, then why can't we in Samarahan form 'Tanjung Bundong City' or 'Belia Samarahan United',' she quipped. Also present were Sarawak Police Commissioner, Dato Mancha Ata, and officials from the government and police force. cyber crimes drugs kota samarahan Rubiah Wang youth

The Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister said this reflects the federal government's ongoing commitment to improving rural living conditions and addressing poverty, particularly among the hardcore poor. She added the PPRS, previously known as the Housing Assistance Programme, is being implemented nationwide including Sarawak. 'This year, we began rolling out the PPRS to replace the previous PBR scheme. Many applications have been approved and are currently in the construction phase throughout the state. 'All that depends on the funding allocated for the year too,' the Kota Samarahan MO told reporters after officiating the handover of sacrificial meat for Kampung Asajaya Ulu and Kampung Asajaya Laut, here yesterday. She explained that applications are evaluated based on strict eligibility and prioritisation criteria to ensure only the most deserving households benefit from the programme. Rubiah also said that approvals are not given all at once but based on priority, which is determined by the relevant district offices, after which the officers verify and endorse the list of recipients to ensure only those truly in need are given assistance. 'In Asajaya alone, 14 homes have been approved for full reconstruction this year, while several more will undergo repair works in phases. These approvals were made through coordination with the local district office and area assemblyman. 'The assemblyman usually refers applicants to the district office for vetting and investigation before any final approval is granted,' she said. Earlier, Rubiah took part in the Aidiladha 'ibadah korban' (sacrificial rites) programme at Masjid Darul Salihin in Kampung Tanjung Parang. The distribution of sacrificial meat was coordinated by the village security and development committee, ensuring it reached eligible recipients especially the needy. 'These programmes not only uphold our religious obligations but also provide a meaningful platform to strengthen the bond between leaders and the community,' she said. allocation hardcore poor People's Prosperity Housing Programme Rubiah Wang
