LGUs distribute free school supplies ahead of SY 2025-2026
Makati Mayor Abby Binay gives laptops to teachers, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon hands out backpacks for School Year 2025-2026. Photos from Makati City and Muntinlupa City LGUs As the School Year 2025-2026 approaches, local government units (LGUs) across Metro Manila have begun distributing free school supplies to ease the financial burden on families and prepare students for their return to the classroom. In Muntinlupa City, Mayor Ruffy Biazon personally led the kickoff of the city's Libreng Balik Eskwela distribution, handing out free backpacks, notebooks, pad papers, pens, pencils, pencil cases, and black leather shoes to public school students—from daycare to senior high school. Now on its third year, the initiative benefits nearly 100,000 students annually. 'Ginagawa natin ang lahat para masuportahan ang kinabukasan ng kabataang Muntinlupeño. Kaya yearly din ang distribution natin ng Balik Eskwela packages bilang tulong sa mga gastusin ng mga pamilya at paghahanda ng mga estudyante sa panibagong school year,' Biazon said in a Facebook post. (We are doing everything we can to support the future of Muntinlupeño youth. That is why we distribute Balik Eskwela packages annually—to help families with their expenses and ensure students are ready for the school year.) The program is part of Biazon's broader 7K Agenda, which prioritizes education and youth empowerment. Last year, students received MUNwalk sneakers; this year, leather shoes were provided to ensure variety and practicality in daily schoolwear. Meanwhile, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay spearheaded the distribution of free school supplies, uniforms, and emergency Go Bags at Nemesio I. Yabut Elementary School. Under the city's Project FREE (Free Relevant and Excellent Education) program, students received uniforms, notebooks, pens, pad papers, socks, two types of shoes (leather and rubber), school bags, jackets, hard hats, and emergency kits for classroom use. Mayor Binay, joined by Makati 2nd District Representative Luis Campos, also turned over laptops to public school teachers and teaching-related personnel to enhance instructional delivery and administrative work. A total of 1,410 laptops will be distributed to educators across the city. 'All public school students in Makati are entitled to these provisions under Project FREE. We want to make sure no child is left behind, and no teacher is left unsupported,' said Binay, emphasizing that investing in both students and teachers is key to the city's long-term education strategy. In Quezon City, Mayor Joy Belmonte personally visited Batino Elementary School (SPED Center), Ponciano Bernardo Elementary School, and Manuel A. Roxas High School to distribute free learning kits to students on Tuesday. The initiative aims to support learners as they gear up for the incoming school year. The Department of Education (DepEd) earlier announced that public schools across the country would open classes for School Year 2025–2026 on June 16, 2025. The DepEd is in the thick of preparations to ensure schools are ready to welcome students on June 16. DepEd Assistant Secretary for Operations Jocelyn Andaya emphasized on Tuesday the importance of early enrollment and community cooperation through the annual Brigada Eskwela. —Sherylin Untalan/KG, GMA Integrated News

Sandiganbayan finds Ruffy Biazon guilty of graft
The Sandiganbayan has found Muntinlupa mayor and former lawmaker Ruffy Biazon guilty of graft in connection with the P10 billion pork barrel scam. As a result, the anti-graft court sentenced Biazon to six to 10 years in jail. Sandiganbayan, however, cleared Biazon of malversation raps in the same pork barrel case. Biazon, meanwhile, has said that he will appeal the ruling. 'Public service should not be derailed by noise or distraction. My commitment to Muntinlupeños stands firm—a city led with compassion, guided by vision, and focused on real solutions," Biazon said in a statement. Biazon's camp also said that the Sandiganbayan verdict does not impact his current position as mayor. "The governance will continue with the same integrity and resolve that has marked his leadership since day one. This is not the end—it's the beginning of a renewed push for deeper, more inclusive public service,' Biazon's camp said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Muntinlupa begins free medicine delivery for senior citizens
The Muntinlupa City has launched a free medicine delivery service for senior citizens 80 years old and above and bedridden residents 60 years old and above. In a statement on Thursday, the local government unit said the Responsive Integrated Delivery of Essential Medicines (RIDE Med) aims to ease the burden of senior citizens and their families from getting the needed medicines. Under the program, eligible senior citizens will have free monthly deliveries of prescribed maintenance medicines for medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol. A RIDE Med rider will be accompanied by a barangay health worker to ensure proper coordination and follow-up. A senior citizen must be a resident of Muntinlupa City. Their family members can register them at their respective barangay health center or through its hotline service. For inquiries and registration assistance, residents may contact 0908-208-1044, 0908-725-4288, or 851-3485. Meanwhile, senior citizens may still receive free maintenance medicine at their local health centers through the 'Love ko si Lolo, Love ko si Lola' program, even if they are not bedridden or over 80 years old. 'Hindi natin pwedeng hayaan na ang ating mga lolo at lola, lalo na 'yung mga hindi na makalakad, ay mapag-iwanan. Serbisyo na ang lalapit sa kanila. Sa RIDE Med, ihahatid na natin ang gamot diretso sa bahay ng senior citizen,' Mayor Ruffy Biazon said. (We cannot allow our grandparents, especially those who can no longer walk, to be left behind.
