Buss released a statement Wednesday discussing the agreement to sell majority ownership of the Lakers to businessman Mark Walter and explained why he is an 'excellent partner' to continue the team's legacy. 'The Buss family is deeply honored to have looked after this incredible organization for almost half a century,' the statement said. 'From the day our father purchased the Lakers, we have been determined to deliver what the City of Los Angeles deserves and demands: a team that is committed to winning – relentlessly – and to doing so with passion and with style. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill, File) Businessman Mark Walter's acquisition of the majority ownership stake of the Los Angeles Lakers, in a deal that puts the franchise valuation at $10 billion, is expected to close in the third or fourth quarter of this year. In a statement Wednesday, the sides confirmed that Jeanie Buss — whose family has had control of the Lakers for 46 years — will remain governor of the team and 'continue to oversee all team operations on a day-to-day basis for the foreseeable future.' Advertisement Walter has been a minority owner of the Lakers since 2021. Jerry Buss, Jeanie Buss' father, bought the team in 1979. 'From the day our father purchased the Lakers, we have been determined to deliver what the City of Los Angeles deserves and demands: a team that is committed to winning — relentlessly — and to doing so with passion and with style,' Jeanie Buss said. 'I have gotten to know Mark very well over time and been delighted to learn how he shares those same values. For the last four years, Mark has been an excellent partner to us, and we are thrilled to keep working with him to continue the Lakers' extraordinary legacy.' Walter, the chairman and CEO of TWG Global, a diversified holding company, has ownership stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers, the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks, the Billie Jean King Cup, the Cadillac Formula 1 Team and the Professional Women's Hockey League. He said the Lakers 'have long been one of the most iconic franchises in sports.' Advertisement 'Since Dr. Jerry Buss first purchased the team in 1979, they have truly set the standard for basketball in one era after another, which is why you can find people anywhere in the world wearing Lakers shirts and jerseys,' Walter said. The agreement for the sale of the Lakers came about three months after Bill Chisholm agreed to buy the Boston Celtics with an initial valuation of $6.1 billion — which was going to be a record, topping the previous mark of $6.05 billion sale for the NFL's Washington Commanders. The Celtics' sale is not yet finalized, pending final approval by the NBA's board of governors. ___ AP NBA:

‘Awards Chatter' Pod: Kate Hudson on ‘Running Point,' Pros and Cons of Rom-Com Success and How Sia Inspired Her to Pursue a Music Career
Kate Hudson, the Golden Globe-winning and Critics Choice, SAG, BAFTA and Academy award-nominated actress who has been a bona fide movie star for 25 years, is getting some of her best reviews in years for her recent pivot to TV with the Netflix comedy series Running Point, on which she serves as an EP and plays a version of Jeanie Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Last week, the inaugural Newport Beach TV Fest honored her with its Performer of the Year Award (Actress) — but first, she sat down at the fest with THR to record an episode of our Awards Chatter podcast. Over the course of the conversation, Hudson, 46, reflected on what she learned from growing up with Goldie Hawn as her mother and Kurt Russell are her stepfather, but also how she sought to distance herself from them as she tried to break into the business. She dished about how she came to Cameron Crowe's 2000 film Almost Famous, first in the role of the protagonist's sister, and then, following the departure of Sarah Polley from the project, the role of a groupie. She expressed gratitude for the success of 2003's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days but admitted disappointment and frustration at the rom-com box into which it placed her for many years thereafter. And she credited singer/songwriter Sia, who directed her in the controversial 2021 film Music, with inspiring her to pursue a music career of her own. This summer, he's swapping free throws for freestyles as he steps into the role of a hip-hop star in the Off Broadway play 'Duke & Roya,' at the Lucille Lortel Theater. The drama finds him stumbling into a cross-cultural romance with life-threatening consequences. 'At first glance,' he said, 'there's no reason why you think these two people would ever hit it off.' He added: 'We're in a world where everyone yells, no one listens. Everybody really just wants connection, to be seen, to be understood, and I just loved the idea that these two characters do.' Ellis, 43, temporarily relocated his family of four to New York from their home in Los Angeles. One particular aspect of the local culture suits him well. 'I absolutely love pizza,' he said, name-dropping his latest find, Fini. 'My daughter took a bite and was like, 'Why don't we have pizza like this in L.A., Daddy?'' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
