Vanamahotsava to be launched in Kalaburagi on Saturday
In a major initiative to enhance greenery in Kalaburagi city and district, vanamahotsava (tree plantation festival) will officially be launched on Saturday, announced Forest Minister Eshwar B. Khandre and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj Priyank Kharge after a high-level meeting in Bengaluru on Monday.
The Ministers also held a virtual interaction with senior officials from Kalaburagi district. During the interaction, they confirmed that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will launch the campaign.
It was decided in the meeting to undertake a large-scale plantation drive across the district which would cover 'Hasiru Patha' (green corridor) – an initiative to plant saplings along 5,000 km of roads under the MGNREGA scheme – and the 'One Tree for Every Home' – an initiative to promote urban greening by encouraging households across Kalaburagi city to plant trees and nurture them.
Speaking on the environmental significance of the initiative, Mr. Khandre stressed the urgent need to combat rising temperatures in Kalyana Karnataka region. He noted that sustained efforts in tree plantation could help bring down the temperature by at least one degree Celsius. He also revealed that the government aimed to plant and nurture 25 lakh saplings across the region this year.
Outlining the Kalaburagi greening plans, Mr. Priyank said that extensive tree plantation would be undertaken around four lakes, five public parks, and 23 traffic circles in the city.
