Hiker found dead after dayslong search in notorious mountain range
An extensive four-day search for a New Hampshire man who had been missing in a notorious range of the Rocky Mountains ended in tragedy earlier this week. Russell Hardy, 55, set out on a hiking adventure on Pikes Peak, in the front range of the Rockies, after arriving in Colorado on June 10, according to the El Paso County, Colorado Sheriff's Office. He began his hike the next day, and was meant to return home by June 12, but never did. Pikes Peak stands at 14,110 feet, making it one of the tallest mountains in the United States. When Hardy's family reported him missing on June 13, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, alongside the Teller County Sheriff's Office, launched a joint search-and-rescue operation to locate him. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said that the massive search involved teams from both law enforcement agencies who used K-9 teams and drones in their attempt to locate Hardy. On Monday, a hiker discovered Hardy's body near the summit of Pikes Peak in El Paso County. Police say foul play is not suspected. "While there is no indication of foul play, this appears to be a tragic outcome of a man confronting the challenges of nature," the sheriff's office said. "Our deepest condolences are with Mr. Hardy's family during this difficult time," said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. "Although this is not the outcome anyone hoped for, the dedication shown by everyone involved remains deeply appreciated. Over 100 volunteers from agencies across the Pikes Peak region assisted in the search, braving varying weather conditions and challenging terrain for the mission. "On behalf of myself and Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all deputies, volunteers, rangers, and support personnel who committed themselves to this effort." In a Thursday morning release, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said the Army Reserve helped recover Hardy's body. "At the request of local authorities, Army Reserve aviation assets from Charlie Company, 7–158th General Support Aviation Battalion supported a recovery operation on Pikes Peak," said Captain Britney Tingstrom of the 11th Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade Public Affairs Officer. "The mission was conducted in coordination with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and El Paso County Search and Rescue to assist in the safe retrieval of a deceased individual from a remote location. The sheriff's office said it is continuing its investigation and that the county coroner's office will soon officially confirm Hardy's identity.

Hiker with plans to explore CO peak vanishes, deputies say. Now, a body is found
A body matching the description of a missing New Hampshire man was found by a hiker near the summit of a Colorado mountain, sheriff's deputies said. The body is believed to belong to Russell Hardy, 55, who was reported missing June 13 after coming to Colorado Springs 'with plans to hike and explore Pikes Peak,' the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said in a June 17 post on Facebook. Identificationof the body will be confirmed by the county coroner's office, deputies said. The coroner's office also will determine a cause of death, according to deputies, who said foul play isn't suspected and instead 'this appears to be a tragic outcome of a man confronting the challenges of nature.' Hardy got to Colorado Springs on June 10 and was supposed to be back home within a couple of days, deputies said. A post made to social media put him by Crags Trailhead on June 11, according to deputies, who said his rental car was found at a trailhead. Rescuers searched for him, including using K9s and drones, deputies said. The hiker found his likely remains about noon June 16 near the Pikes Peak summit, according to deputies. On a GoFundMe page, Hardy's family said climbing the mountain 'was one of his lifelong dreams.' He reached the top and died after a fall heading down amid bad weather, his family said on the page, noting that they're taking some comfort knowing he achieved his goal 'and passed doing something he truly loved.' Pikes Peak, which stands at more than 14,000 feet tall, is west of Colorado Springs.

World's Top Oil Trader Sees Lower U.S. Output in 2025
U.S. oil production is set for a slight drop this year amid weaker prices, the chief executive of the world's largest independent oil trader, Vitol Group, said on Tuesday. 'With slightly lower prices ... we're beginning to see some impact on investment and production,' Vitol's CEO Russell Hardy said at the Energy Asia conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as carried by Reuters. 'And there's nowhere more obvious for that than within the U.S. and within the shale industry,' the executive added. Hardy joins other industry executives in predicting that the U.S. shale patch will struggle to maintain the record-high production levels of the past months amid lower oil prices. U.S. shale production will likely plateau if WTI oil prices are in the low $60s per barrel, and decline at prices in the $50s, ConocoPhillips chairman and CEO Ryan Lance said last month. Executives polled in the Dallas Fed Energy Survey in Q1 indicated that their companies need an average $65 per barrel to profitably drill a new well. Last week, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said in its June Short-Term Energy Outlook that total U.S. crude oil production is now forecast to slip from a record 13.5 million barrels per day (bpd) in the second quarter of 2025 to around 13.3 million bpd by the end of 2026. U.S. rig activity is tumbling. Last month's rig count decline far exceeded expectations—the lowest since November 2021—with Baker Hughes reporting U.S. oil rigs at just 442 as of last week. In the Permian, the industry's crown jewel, rig totals have fallen to levels not seen since late 2021. The Israel-Iran conflict is adding a lot of volatility and uncertainty on the oil market, driving WTI Crude prices above the $70 per barrel mark. However, without an actual supply disruption to oil supply and trade in the Middle Eastern region, oil prices will struggle to hold on to the $70s handle, according to analysts.
