Former Washington NFL stars named July 4 Parade Grand Marshals

Former Washington Redskins Clinton Portis and Ryan Kerrigan will be celebrating July 4 in Middletown, Va. The two former Redskins stars are not only celebrating our nation's independence in Middletown, but they are also being honored, as they have been named grand marshals for the July 4 Middletown parade. A third grand marshal has been named, Lauryn Ricketts, a meteorologist with WRC-TV and WTOP-FM in Washington, D.C. Advertisement Portis before playing with the Redskins, was a Miami Hurricane prior to being drafted by the Denver Broncos. When Redskins cornerback Champ Bailey threatened to boycott training camp if they used the NFL franchise tag on him, Washington traded Bailey and a second-round draft choice to the Broncos for Portis. Playing in 113 NFL games, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards, averaging 4.4 yards a carry and scoring 75 NFL touchdowns. Following his NFL career, Portis was voted one of the Washington Redskins' greatest 80 players to mark the 80th anniversary of the franchise. Kerrigan played in 172 NFL games, all but one season in Washington, where he accumulated 95.5 quarterback sacks. The former first-round draft choice (16th overall) by the Redskins in the 2011 NFL draft, accumulated 333 solo tackles while also forcing 26 fumbles. Playing 10 seasons in Washington (his one final season in Philadelphia), Kerrigan became the Washington all-time quarterback sacks leader with 95.5. The four-time Pro Bowler led the NFL in 2016 with 18 tackles for a loss. Advertisement 'We're excited that they're coming and we're looking forward to a wonderful July 4th celebration,' Mayor Charles Harbaugh said. 'We're really throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it.' The mayor was referring to a full slate of activities on tap for Independence Day, starting with a Big Ball softball tournament at 8 a.m. and ending with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. Events will be held at various locations in town but most will occur in Middletown Community Park. The centerpiece of Middletown's July 4th celebration is its parade. Organizer Katie Garrett said that as of Thursday morning, 76 entries were set to participate. The parade will step off at 5 p.m. and wind its way along Main Street. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: Two former Washington NFL stars celebrating July 4 in Virginia parade

Watchful Eyes Are Taking Keen Interest in a Young Commanders' Success

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Summertime always brings the heat, memories, and a few smiles. There's just one problem. Most of its Sundays are void of a Washington Commanders game that counts towards the win-loss total. For that, we'll have to wait until September 7 and a 1 p.m. EST kickoff vs. the hated New York Giants. (Photo by) (Photo by) Photo byFear not, there is plenty to discuss. Deebo Samuel is here. Jayden Daniels enters year two after helping lead his team to the doorstep of being the NFC's representative in Super Bowl LIX. Both football junkies and former rivals are both pumped (and fearful) about the type of magic those two can create together. One can only wonder what past greats like Ryan Kerrigan might have accomplished while playing as part of a roster that is as talented as this one. While no one will ever know that answer, joy can be found in the next best thing. His fingerprints are still all on members of this current Commanders iteration. Frankie Luvu is the talk of the town thanks to workout clips and a recent tip of the cap Though it may not seem like it, the coming NFL season doubles as year eight for Frankie Luvu. He was decent for the New York Jets during three seasons, but he truly took off with the Carolina Panthers. That led to the three-year $31 million contract he signed with Washington on March 11, 2024. He's seen campaigns where he exceeded 100 tackles, so last season didn't produce a personal best in that category. He did, however, force his sixth career forced fumble and snag the second interception of his career while notching career highs in pass breakups (7), sacks (8), and QB hits (14). The good news for Commanders fans is Luvu is still scratching the surface of how good he can be. He recently leaned on a legend to give him some pointers. The franchise's career sack leader, Ryan Kerrigan took on the role of mentor at a recent practice. Luvu approaches year two with Washington. Here's a look at them working out together. Commanders LB Frankie Luvu working with Ryan Kerrigan on pass rush techniques. — Scott Abraham (@Scott7news) June 11, 2025 Make no mistake. People are watching. Pro Football Focus ranked him and teammate Bobby Wagner among the top 32 linebackers entering the 2025 season. Wagner landed in 'Tier 2', third overall. Luvu landed in 'Tier 4', towards the middle of the list at 14. "Luvu didn't put forth his highest-graded season in 2024, but he still maintains a solid overall profile as a run defender and blitzer. Across the past four seasons, he has produced a 72.0-plus PFF pass-rush grade on 70 or more blitzes each year." Those were the words of one Mason Cameron, the writer of this one. His next statement sums up what he and the rest of Commanders Nation is expecting. Must read: PFF's Commanders Evaluation Is Music to Jayden Daniels' Ears "While his run-defense metrics have fallen in each of the past three seasons, he still lands in the 87th percentile in grading... Another season next to Bobby Wagner gives Luvu more potential to expand his game in 2025." It's hard yo disagree. Keep an eye of Luvu as we move through the coming season. He'll play a huge role in the success of the defense.

2025 NFL schedule: Commanders to open the season at home vs. NFC East rival

The Washington Commanders will open the season with a divisional game. According to Art Stapleton of the Bergen Record, the Commanders will open the season at home against the New York Giants. This will be the first time since 2011 that Washington will open the season against the Giants. Washington defeated New York 28-14 back on Sept. 11, 2011, at what was then known as FedEx Field. That game is best remembered as franchise legend Ryan Kerrigan's first NFL game. Kerrigan intercepted Eli Manning in the third quarter and returned it nine yards for a touchdown to give the then-Redskins a 21-14 lead. Advertisement In the fourth quarter, quarterback Rex Grossman found wide receiver Jabar Gaffney on a four-yard touchdown, making it 28-14, and clinching the win for Washington. The two longtime NFC East rivals first met in Week 2 last year, with the Commanders winning 21-18. Kicker Austin Seibert made seven field goals for Washington. The Giants had a chance to win the game, but rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers dropped a fourth-down pass late, which could've clinched the win for New York. The Commanders also won the Week 9 rematch, 27-22. The NFL will release the full 2025 schedule on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
