MI Cape Town Announces Retained Players Ahead of New SA20 Season
Last Updated: MI Cape Town, 2025 SA20 champions, retained six key players for 2026: Ryan Rickelton, George Linde, Corbin Bosch, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, and Trent Boult. Fresh off their historic maiden SA20 championship triumph in 2025, MI Cape Town has revealed its list of retained players, preserving a strong blend of local and international talent as the team prepares to defend its crown in the 2026 season. Six Key Players Retained The franchise has retained a total of six players—four domestic and two international—each of whom played a vital role in MI Cape Town's 2025 success. Their performances were significant not only in the SA20 league but also across the broader Mumbai Indians global cricket network. South African Core Remains Strong Among the local contingent, Ryan Rickelton and George Linde will continue their journey with the franchise into a fourth consecutive season. Corbin Bosch, who was added to the squad last season, also returns after making a notable impact. Joining them is star pacer Kagiso Rabada, who has been secured as MI Cape Town's wildcard player, further strengthening the South African core. Leading the overseas lineup is Rashid Khan, the captain who steered MI Cape Town to their 2025 SA20 title. He will be joined once again by veteran left-arm pacer Trent Boult. The pair were instrumental in delivering the team's maiden championship and will look to replicate their success in the upcoming campaign. Also joining the international roster is West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran, who has been pre-signed and is set to make his debut for the franchise in 2026. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 15:40 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Conrad pleased with Proteas' intensity against Zimbabwe
'This is all about Wiaan . What a performance that was for South Africa. Not too long ago people weren't sure if he should even be in the side. It's amazing how the conversations have changed now. I'm thrilled for Wiaan. I'm sure he's a really happy man now.' Less happy will be the three opening batters Conrad gave an opportunity to in the series while Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton were rested. Lesego Senokwane, who made his debut in the second Test, looked nervous while scoring three off 36 balls. Matthew Breetzke, who played the first match scored one and 13, while Tony de Zorzi finished the series with 41 runs in three innings. 'They will be disappointed by the numbers they put out,' said Conrad. 'Tony missed out on the final, came back in, he would definitely have wanted to put in a big performance, the same with wasn't easy against the new ball, especially in the first Test. But when the conditions are tough and the bowlers are executing we must be able to do tough and do tough better. I think, as a top order, they will be hugely disappointed.'

Wiaan Mulder: Proteas debutants can put pressure on regulars
All-rounder Wiaan Mulder said the five uncapped players in the Proteas squad for the two-Test series in Zimbabwe are eager to prove they deserve their call-up. The Proteas face Zimbabwe in two Tests in Bulawayo, starting on Saturday and July 6, with several big names missing out. According to The Citizen, Test captain Temba Bavuma is out due to the hamstring injury he picked up in the World Test Championship final victory two weeks ago, while Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been rested. Recently injured fast bowlers Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee and Lizaad Williams were not considered for selection. Lungi Ngidi will join the squad for the second Test. Five Proteas debutants? Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Codi Yusuf, Dewald Brevis and Prenelan Subrayen are set to make their debuts. There is also a recall for Zubayr Hamza. Mulder, who mustered scores of six and 27 and took one wicket during the Test final, described it as a 'new squad'. 'There are a lot of guys here who want to prove a point: Why they are here, how well they have played over the last couple of domestic seasons to get here,' he said. On that note, 19-year-old Pretorius has played just six first-class matches but made an immediate impact with three centuries in his first five games, including one in the CSA 4-Day Series final. He boasts an average of 65.57 in the format. Likewise, Brevis followed up a good SA20 run with a decent IPL. In the longer format, he was the second-leading run-scorer in the 4-Day Series, with 573 runs in 12 innings, including two hundreds and two fifties, averaging 47.75. Senokwane and Hamza were the fourth- and fifth-leading run scorers in the 4-Day Series. Subrayen and Yusuf were the second- and sixth-leading wicket takers. OPINION: Mind-boggling Proteas are resting players for Zim Tests Debutants to put pressure on established Proteas 'We compete at every practice, and I'm pretty sure when we get into that Test match, the guys who are going to fill the spot for… take someone like Ricks [Ryan Rickelton] or Marco [Jansen], are going to put them under pressure when they come back,' Mulder added. 'That's the exciting part about having such a talented group here in Zim.' He said the Proteas have had conversations around their identity, that whoever plays is still ''the best team at the time and we look at ourselves as world champions'. 'Everybody has that in the back of their minds. We are training like we are the best in the world, not like we are trying to become something new.'

Australia all out for 207, South Africa need 282 to win World Test Championship
JOB DONE South Africa's Kagiso Rabada (L) celebrates with Ryan Rickelton (R) after taking the wicket of Australia's Nathan Lyon on day three of the ICC World Test Championship cricket final, at Lord's cricket ground, in London, on June 13, 2025. PictureL Glyn Kirk/AFP South Africa bowled Australia out for 207 on Friday morning at Lord's, meaning the Proteas will need 282 to win the World Test Championship final. Kagiso Rabada was once again the star for South Africa, as he ended the innings with 4/59. Aussie number nine Mitchell Starc frustrated South Africa with 58 not out as shared in a final wicket stand of 59 with Josh Hazlewood (17). Since there have only been two sessions of the six so far in this Test, which has yielded less than four wickets, it's clear to see that the batsmen have simply not been able to hold their own. Rabada (5/51) and Marco Jansen (3/49) starred in the first innings for SA as Australia collapsed from 192/5 to 212 all out.
