Rowing regatta returning to Ryde after 50 years

Ryde Rowing Regatta 2017 (Image: Graham Reading Photography) Ryde Rowing Club is set to host the Hants and Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta. The event, scheduled for May 11, marks nearly five decades since the first championship regatta was held off Appley Beach in June 1977, as part of the club's centenary celebrations. Initially a one-off event, the regatta's popularity led to the establishment of the Isle of Wight Rowing Weekend, with both Ryde and Shanklin clubs hosting annual championships since 1978. This year, 101 crews and scullers are expected to participate, with more anticipated through late entries. The regatta features a packed programme of 18 races over four-and-a-half hours, covering an 1,820-metre course from Appley Beach towards Ryde Pier and back. Competitions will be held for various classes, including open senior, junior/senior, junior, and novices in coxed fours, coxless pairs, and single sculls. The regatta will kick off at 9.15am, with races every 10 to 15 minutes, and prize-giving at the clubhouse around an hour after the last race ends at about 2pm. TLM Laser sponsors the regatta, with further support from local businesses, club members and Wightlink. The public is encouraged to attend this free event, with the best views from the sea wall by the canoe lake.
